Super Leo loves playing at the SFS, he scored his first-ever goal in the A-League I believe for Perth (though it came off his shin).

Then last season, he finished off for us with a very good header after a peach of a ball (may have been from Judas) in a 2-1 win.

Hopefully we'll be ready to go after the match in R4. We offered very, very little and the late goal from Sydney FC was coming. They ended up getting 2, and it was a tame 2-0 loss.

Also I have nightmares about that R19 clash last season, Hearfield's sending off, and we concede the goal that knocks us out.

this will be a good test that i believe we will pass. the next three games will be a good test for the squad. we cant get to reliant on one starting 11. need to be able to be missing a few first team regulars and still feel confident in getting a result Downey262009-10-30 11:22:28

Sydney made us look like schoolboys last game.  2-0 and dominated the midfield.  So this will be a good test.  GCU defense has been vulnerable all season and they folded like cards last week.  I don't see the same coming from Sydney.  Should be good.

But our defence has tightened up a lot since then so yes- a good test.

What? Our defence wasn't the problem against Sydney last time out. We just had nothing going forward.

Yeah, in the last 10 minutes or so because they eventually tired us out after 80 mins of us defending..

If you don't keep the ball and offer something going forward, you're way more likely to conceed.

I'm guessing you watched the game...We defended well for 90% of it.

agree with valeo.that was an ugly game and we did nothing for the whole 90' and I think we actually deserved to lose.
if you shut down corica and brosque sydney are nothing. interesting to see the duel between our own sweet Malteser vs Shannon Cole

Was from Brown. Remember that game clearly. Popovic with a late handball to concede the penalty and then he retires the next day.

Agree with Valeo and Leggy.  The back five worked their butts off and kept us in it for longer than we deserved.  The midfield couldn't hold possession for two passes and the ball just kept coming back.

I don't think GCU pressure the ball anywhere near as much as Sydney will, so this will be a whole different test.  But like people are saying I think the midfield has improved, they are linking with Bertos and Daniel better, plus getting better help playing the ball out from Manny and Lockhead - well from the whole back four really, Sigmund possibly less so.  The side also seems more confident in back passes and redirecting the play through Paston (you'd want to be, the way he started the season taking those passes).  Plus last game v Sydney we played about as bad collectively as we could in possession.

So really looking forward to see how they go this time.  I think Sydney are less aggressive and less fast going forward, compared to GCU (Brosque aside), but a more complete team and they will put real pressure on the ball and hold it much better when they have it.  I'll be watching to see how well we hold the ball and how well we can play constructively under more pressure; and to see that we don't get too deep defending.

Should be a cracker and if it goes our way this one will really make the side.

If the midfield really has improved, this will be the test. If Lia and Brown can get on top for extended periods we will win.

As LF1 said (roughly) it'll be interesting to see how Ricki manages the squad with an important run for the Nix and something a bit special on the 14th

Re Timmo - i agree timing might help the AW's shame McKain isn't likely to fill that gap (i suppose ferrante is next in line)

if Manny gets pinged x 2 yellows, mully would be better at rb than Troy imo

need Dura to stay clear of suspension until Mckain is on deck

interesting times!

Welcome back SCO3.
Are you done with the Asia stint or heading back after the AW's v Bahrain on the 14th?

The Phoenix should be more confident of a good showing following on from last week. Here's to a repeat of round 4 from  07. Good luck.

He scored one and hit the crossbar against TeeDubs last week.  You might be surprised (as long as he doesn't play at right back).

you're right, I just didn't want to get into details. But the fact remains, that Corica and Brosque are by far their best player and if we can shut them down and attack in numbers we can be in for the money. They're a good team all round and their 7 wins speak for themselves.
However they are a team that doesn't like being attacked (who does?!). Last week's game vs Roar showed how easily their confidence can be broken down.

To me they're a team that can beat anyone when they're in the right state of mind. by the same token if they don't score early and get attacked a lot they can lose their cool and panick. Also Bridge is pretty good.

On different topics, would definitely give Mulli another choice. I have seen him in training games several times and he's always impressed me. I was amongst those who called for his head when he didn't perform but at the same time I think everyone deserves a second chance.

On McKain: should we sign an injury-replacement player? Sure, so if anyone between Dura and Sggy needs a break we've got it covered. However I'd like to know how far McKain is at this stage.
Siggy will need to be rested as he'll be playing every game including the Play Off in which, if I know him well enough, he's gonna give 1000%!

Costa is the fastest player in our side. Probably hasn't used his pace to beat players because he hasn't had enough game time, and I'd say he'd want to be playing a more simple error free game in the time he has played.

I know Michael Winsauer from TW has been training with the Nix but might not be quite the level we're after?

All this stuff about Costa when oh when is he going to show anything, he needs to move on and play games then he can be judged... in this side he has no chance bar a bit player

I think Costa is a much better option off then bench from what I've seen. I'm really glad to hear that Ricki is going to rotate between Chen, Costa and Rojas. Well thats how I understand it.

Anyway, Costa has the pace and has the hunger and hes shown that already. He scored a great goal last season and against tired legs, he will be able to pick up some goals in my opinion. If he had been on the bench last week then I reckon he would have had at least one.

Said it in the transfer thread but Andy Boyens maybe, is or has been training with the Nix and good option for gametime before 14th.

With Ferrante and Diego playing so poorly, McKain out, and 3 games in 7 days, I think I could cope with Mulligan getting a chance to show if he has any future in the midfield for us at some point this week.
