Phoenix v Sydney - Nov 1 - match thread

I think this is the longest after any game that a thread for the next match hasn't appeared!

Surely has to be same starting XI...possible change on the bench with McKain (if fit) for Chen.

Tough match against the league leaders, but Phoenix have won 3 and drawn 1 of their six matches against SFC, including 2 wins from 3 in Sydney.

Discuss.

Seven games ?  Or are we ignoring the game before our draw run ?

Some of the losses were incredibly frustrating as well.  Last season we let their kids run around when we should have lumped them, and then party all thre time got sent off.  Should never have lost that.  THen the first round game, they lost McFlynn which left them with no covering midfielder and we just never went at them through the middle when we should have.

Hopefully we believe this time around.

They are top of the league,  but they aren't that great. Better defensively than Gold Coast, and we won't be able to run riot through the midfield so much. Didn't see Sydneys match last night, but I heard that they only just hung on / maybe a bit lucky?  I suppose a draw over there wouldn't be too bad a result, but it's fairly simple - if we play well (like we have quite a bit this season), we can surely win. Hopefully a bit more confidence up front after last night will help.

What is the longest unbeaten streak in the A-League? Surely we must be close.

We are all hoping for another thrashing, and I hope we do it, but this one could be the type of Draw to take. We have the ability to beat them, but they are a much tighter unit than GCU in my opinion.

Runs from Lochhead will be key, combining with Daniel and Ifill to create

Yes, I was ignoring that for some reason.

P 7 W3, D1, L3

And 2 wins from 4 in Sydney

Melbourne Victory 9 - 31 December 2007 9 October 2008
Queensland Roar 8 - 21 January 2006 22 September 2006
Melbourne Victory 8 - 4 February 2006 8 October 2006

Would probably take a draw, but definitely capable of winning.

I hope we go there and attack, unlike the last time over there.

For undefeated runs, this is the most I can find:

Sydney:       Undefeated streak:
11 matches (7 May 2005 6 August 2005)

Melbourne:    Most Wins in a Row: 8 matches (4 Feb 2006 - 8 Oct 2006)

I know Adelaide has had 9 in a row too

Well Brisbane had Sydney on the rack in the last 10 mins and nearly nicked a point. Stop Sydney feeding Brosque and that's their threat nulified. The pressure might be on our midfield to close them down.

Byun out is a big loss, I think it must've been his best game for us yesterday.

Yep...Brown will be in workhorse mode to close down the attacks

I reckon we could win, if can nick a goal early and put them under pressure. They seem to be able to score late so no use playing really defensively.

Yeah the more I think about it, we are quite well equipped to take these guys down. Our defensive structure should be able to shut they down in the center. As long as they dont push our flanks too well because I think this could be one of our main weaknesses, thankfully Durante has been crazy amazing defensively in the air

If last night's Phoenix turn up we win.
If last week's Phoenix turn up we lose.

Simple.

Yeah we did it well last season against them..... our defence is class, it really is.

Same team as yesterday. You can argue the subs depending on who is fit/ coming back and possibly a Costa for Chen thing if you still haven't got the message that Costa isn't going to get a crack but there is no debating the starting 11 remains the same.

Sydney seem to play the same was as the Gold Coast, and I think we can shut them down the same way. Cut down their midfield options, and they can't feed through to Brosque/Bridges to make the long runs.

Defensively I believe we're a lot better than Sydney, it just needs the boys to carry the confidence of this weekend to Sydney, and give them hell!

And I think with that kind of confidence, we will go out and win it. I dont think we will be arrogant because we've had all those draws, and if we stick to what we were doing last night (And if higgins transfers to Bling ) then we can beat them.
Chen for Costa is 50-50 for me. Give the kid one last chance to impress before swapping him out

I remember last year we were on a high after three wins in a row and then got pumped 6-1 at Adelaide. That was very painful. Hopefully that doesn't happen this week. I'm sure it won't though.

Win would be excellent but Sydney are top of the league. Draw would be okay, keep us unbeaten for our home run.

if you play to draw then your already on the back foot. play to win. they can do it. they showed it 6 different ways. :)

chen is rubbish. same team but swap costa in for him

Yeah, from what I've seen of him (and it's not a lot tbf) he doesn't look much. Too small and weak, bumped off the ball too easily I thought.

I'd say same bench with Costa or maybe McKain if he's fit in for Chen.

If McKain's on the bench one of the mifielders (Our Troy or Caceres) should be dropped, we need to have a striker option there.

Bloody Sydney.

I don't know what to think. This league is too unpredictable. Hoping for a win, probably gonna be a draw, and at worst luck and poor tactics, a loss.Azevo2009-10-26 22:15:37

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

100% correct.

How the hell do you play for a draw anyway, might as well play for a loss.

I think we saw the key to breaking these teams up against try hard bling.
Midfield. Hassle, hassle, hussle.
I think we made them look bad as apposed to them being bad, and for 90mins.
Most midfield players (most others too) in this league are only any good if they are given time on the ball.
Take that away from them and we should beat anyone.

This is a new one, blaming tactics used before a match has even been played.  Well done.

the most important thing is not be over confident or we will come crashing down and our 6 goal destruction of GCU wont mean much..

I need to be careful before chucking a line-up up here.  Before the last game I thought we should lose Daniel, put Costa in the forwards and put Ifill in the back as we need two strikers.  But we played brilliantly so I'd stick with the same team.  I do worry a bit about Bertos though, that stunner vs Perth gave him a lot of confidence which is good but seeing him trying to be tricky and failing (some of the time only, granted) is painful to watch.  Bring back the Bertos of early season 2 imo.
