In terms of travelling from Auckland for matches - Sundays pretty much kill it for me

Dodd rubbish, people say we should give him one more game to get settled but what I'd do is start Johnson and when he gets tired sub Dodd on, meaning Dodd gets some game time to practise DM but we have the security and experience of Johnson for most of the game. Lochhead wasn't at his best, Bertos's crossing was shocking, Muscat looked nervous as. Kwasnik was pretty invisible for me. Whole match for me was just wishing we'd try the short pass more!
That Charlie Miller for Queensland is a bit unfit but bloody hell he is something else, a real playmaker. Completely dicked our defense when he wanted too.

who were the assholes right at the back of the fever zone having a go at the yellow fever?

I can see the pros and cons of Sunday games, but I'm not overjoyed about the amount of Sundays we've got this season. It certainly doesn't make it easy.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Has been at least 3 times, he keeps coming back.  Should really form a forum for he and his three mates that make up the 'Wifebeaters'...

What happened in the Fever Zone? I actually score a ticket right smack in the middle of it and all of last years regulars have moved. Here I was expecting to be surrounded by legends and instead I was surrounded by new faces. Gutted, I hoped to learn so much from you all! Still the new attendees were in good voice so all bodes well for the future!
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

i still reckon yellow fever has more of a ring to it.

seriously think we need to get some new material in the fever zone....more people should look in the chants forum for some of the newer stuff.

There is a lot of new material about and we got some of it moving in the new aisle but it never spread.

Suspect next week we'll integrate back in the main aisles and see if we can  fire along nicely.

Oh and although Dodd made a few mistakes, he saved our arses on several occasions. I thought he did ok considering the circumstances. Perhaps giving him & Richard half games they could both then go flat out for that 45 mins??

I even thought Dodds was lining up a shot tonight. He was in a good position for it too but a pass to him was poorly timed.

Some might think I'm taking the piss but I'm not, I'm giving Dodds a fair chance this season.

Only 10k.

COmpared to the 12k we had opening game last season. I dont think these sunday games are ideal for a lot of people is all. Bet you will see bigger crowd numbers in our 3 friday and saturday games

12k? We had 14,421.

Haha does that not prove my point about sunday games even more?

The worst performance of the night tonight was definitely the Fever Zone.  Quiet, disjointed, not funny.  Shambles.

This is very true...I remember about 15mins to go I think Daniel or Hearfield were raising their arms trying to get some support with no response!!

What on earth happened??

at the PSC game vs mariners you were way better...and that was a Sunday too...so I don't buy the Sunday excuse???

The "sunday excuse" was for crowd NUMBERS not volume or atmosphere...

persevere, persevere, hopefully more will start to pick it up...think the key to it is running through them all a few times even if they don't get picked up at first just so people can listen to them and try and make out most of the chant.

Yeah there was a couple of chants that if you had done it one more time i would have joined in on. People keep starting them, then stopping before anyone further away can pick up on them then join in.

The goals. Looking at the replay again: terrific little lobbed pass through to Smeltz by Daniel. He had an indifferent game overall (especially after he got the yellow card, which seemed to knock him right off his stride) but that was classy.

Wow, stunning lob from Daniel (that's why he's gotta be in our starting XI), but Smeltzy's finish was something else. That was on the full, it didn't bounce at all and he just gets the sweetest of touches. I'd say anyone else trying to get on the end of that would have hammered it and missed completely. To be honest, that was a shambles tonight. Probably the worst we've played at the RoF - too much route 1, the skill factor seemed to be lacking somewhat, and we were lucky to scrape with a point from the game.
Mossy was a legend, saved our bacon towards the end of the game, defensively we were OK, although Muscat had a dodgy moment or two (especially in the first half), but I was disappointed with McKain's constant long balls, although part of it was our midfield which seemed incapable of holding on to the ball for more than two passes. Leo was very poor overall, did some good things but made a lot of dumbe decisions (taking people on when the best he could do is get isolated on the touchline, made stupid runs towards defenders, or through very difficult passing lanes), Daniel had a very good period when we scored and soon after, but overall his touch seemed poor and he didn't get involved in the game as much as we needed him. Smeltzy's a legend, had nothing to feed off the whole game, and one chance he gets he puts away. Dodd was terrible in the first half, slight improvement in the second.
We were hanging on for dear life in the last 5, although I agree that we could well have lost this game last season, so in that respect it's an important point.
I hope that many of the sub-par performances are one-offs, but I'm still concerned at our toothlessness up front. Still think that Smeltzy has too much to do, and legend that he is, it's gonna be a reald hard job for him. Still concerned that we won't get enough goals to be contenders playing with this personnel in this formation.
As for the zone, felt a bit weird being on the wrong side of the aisle 21, hopefully we'll pick things up next week too. And the crowd number was disappoining too, I was hoping for 13-14k.

Another one disappointed with our performance.
We seemed to have stopped doing everything we had right in preseason.

Johnson instead of Dodd please.
Need a more attacking right back; hopefully Mulligan?

Loved Smeltz's goal though ...

A point is a point.
My thoughts:
-Too many players drifting in and out of the game
-At times like watching Wimbledon from the eighties
-Lack of movement in midfield/up front- didn't help with the hoof-ball
-Would have lost last season
-Roar will be bloody hard to beat this season, their midfield just chase everything that moves and wins most of the 50/50's

poor performance by phoenix
they played a short passing game v melbourne, yet yesterday went ugly playing long ball all day, many way of target?? delivery of crosses from bertos and lochead was poor reminde me of the ellrich days haha!!
roar are a good side though so a point is a good result.
sorry to say daniel was very poor and should have been dragged earlier, while i would prefer johnson to dodd in middle of park.
muscat, durante and smeltz were the best for me and i like the look of hearfield

The core fever guys moving off to oneside can probably be called a failed experiment. i renewed the same seat i had last year and ended up with randoms all around me, but we still managed to get the chants going and quite loudly, i could here you guys starting stuff but we couldnt hear clearly enough to join in. there is definatley space for you guys in our area. i think i was the only person in my row who actually had tickets there, everyone else was migrants. i particuaryl liked the D.I.N.G.O chants.

Crowds for the weekend were;

Nix v Roar 10,500
Adelaide v Perth 10,500
Syd v Melb 16,000
Jets v Mariners (local derby) 16,000

I think the crowd was lower than most expected because of; dodgy weather, competing with the Olympics and a bit of general belt tightening.

I'm not too worried about the crowd size at this stage however the concern is the quality of the game. The game was not a good spectacle and was not up to the standard of the open flowing football we played last year. We need to get back to that football (by sorting out the midfield) otherwise crowd numbers will go south and will become a worry.

Very poor preformance by all, The Team, the Thistle Inn slow service, The Fever very quiet, The CEO lying about the crowd figure - how about trying 7500 and lets take out all the FOC tickets flying around, Wellington Public and so on.

Need to front up next week

The Roar forced us into the long ball. They closed down quickly and chased everything. Credit to the Roar, they exposed some areas of weakness that we had not really seen to date so hopefully Ricky and co jump on this and learn for next week.

All in all a point at home having played average against a hungry Roar team is a good start Id say. Afterall look at the Jets who should have won but only came away with a point

The Fever Zone was relatively quiet compared but I think that was probably for the same reason the Phoenix was quiet on the pitch......high expectations and then feeling a little deflated when it didn't go how we had all thought it would.

Next week will be the real test - Have we learnt from this week or haven't we - Thats a sign of a great team as is taking points from a match that we possibly shouldn't have

That was probably the worst I have ever seen us play. I'm sure we played just as bad last year sometime but I don't remember it. The long ball was horrible to watch and Dodd was an oaf in midfield. QLD looked like the home team - not us. valeo2008-08-18 10:20:05

Well said el grapadura.  1-1 fine if we'd played well, but agree that was our least attractive performance to date.

On the Sunday issue, wouldn't it be better if the games were earlier.  5pm means its cold and you get home fairly late.  Much better to play in the afternoon sun (OK, in short supply recently).  2.30pm  ideal.
