They played the better tactical game by some marging.  They spotted a swimming pool and launched it long, plus Alssopp was excellent.

Actually it would be interesting to see what those slamming Stu Jacobs have to say on this.  Better to lose trying to play controlling football on a pitch not up to it, or better to try and win  ?

if we played the long ball game and still lost, they'd be bagged regardless. if we won then we would be praised for adapting to the conditions. if we won playing how we did then we would also be praised for playing good football. so in summing up when you lose you get bagged, when you win you get praised.

f**kin oath.

i mean, sure Ricki should've said the the lads: "well, everything we worked on over the week, to try and correct what we didn't do against Queensland, just forget that - cos it's raining. Go back to to crappy long ball football, and try to win instead of trying to lose with all that short passing. Cos it's raining."

I have to laugh - for years everyone bagged Allan Jones as he was winning everything with Auckland City and he didn't care what anyone thought as long as he was winning. Their long ball direct football caught out NZFC team after NZFC team and they were the best team. He has been a professional coach for 30 years and he was happy to win.

Is there a lesson for the Phoenix - who cares how you play as long as you win.

Quote from Zagallo Brazilian First team coach: ''I would rather win playing ugly football than lose playing attractive football. Efficiency in football is based on victories. Everyone wants to win, and I'm no different.''

Says it all really.

If long balls worked for us, sweet. Pity they don't.

i think they just need to find their own rhythm and style of playing that is effective and wins games.

For the first time in his coaching career Ricki now has to win and that is going to be the test - can Ricki win football matches and win a league with a team he has to coach without a technical assistant.

...and there in lies the problem with NZ football...Alan Jones winning philosophy...long ball...thats why we are really no further ahead than we were 30 years ago!...

Please someone find a cohesive approach to developing of 12 - 18 year olds so that we actually improve technically...

It wont be NZF as they dont have the resources...It wont be the Phoenix as they have the commercial realities of surviving in the A league but please spare me the referencdes to Alan Jones & the re-introduction of Kevin Fallon in the NZFC...

Probably now in the wrong forum but H news can sort that...

Wrap Smeltzy up in cotton wool between games cos if he gets injured we are stuffed as far as scoring goals goes.No one else looks remotely capable of getting a goal.
That even more than any defensive problems is what scares the Bjesus out of me.

Well, I've been crapping on about this since June, but everyone's been telling me we'd be fine....

I'm yet to see any evidence of that. If we expect Smeltz to get 30 goals a season just to keep us in games, then there's something seriously wrong...

And I've been there with you all the way el grapadura.  My feeling is we're a notch below the other sides and it is in the front third where we are really going to struggle.  Even last week, in atrocious conditions, we showed, particularly in the first half, our ability to play some good build up football from the back and into the midfield, but then from there on it just dies away.  We're too easy for the opposition in that front third.  Relying on Smeltz alone is unfair on the player and totally unrealistic.  Coveny isn't going to make a huge difference for us.  As for Costa, I can only imagine he's not up to A-League football yet given his omission from the pre-season games and the A-League thus far.  I would have thought that at the age of 19 he'd be at least starting on the bench by now, especially given we don't have much in terms of striker options.

I don't feel so bad about the 4-2 scoreline any more since Melbourne have now given Newcastle a 5-0 drubbing (92min at the time of writing - will it be 6?).
