Oh Bevan? What did security do to impinge on the fun? Last night was very quiet with no evictions by staff and only three people spoken to.....I would love to hear what fun was impinged upon....cheers

Thought the ref was ok personally. sh*t conditions, players sliding in all over the joint, shirts being pulled by both teams and players from both sides going down quicker than <insert name of slapper> at the slightest touch, he could have gone nuts with the cards, but the ones he paid were there I reckon. Shame the crowd was so low, but that looked like a pretty terrible day so hopefully they come back when the sun does.

I'd like to hear from our resident blood nut ref on his opinion of todays officiating.

I think perhaps that may have been two occasions for me to have had a contradictory opinion to the match officials decision.

Can't remember what they were though, couldn't think straight from all the netball bangers going off around me.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

Could have been worse, Victory went close to scoring 2 or 3 more.

Won't start to panic until  after rd 5. By then the team will have had a chance to settle and all players should be up to speed and by then we will have picked 2 wins and 1 draw.

having followed a team that won 6 games out of 46, you just have too believe it will get better.

So he had a shocker, which player hasn't. If he carries on with lasts night form then judge him.

Muscat -  not at this stage, but it takes time to find your feet when you step up a few leagues and quite a few teams have players from the VPL playing for them, so don't think its a job for the boys.

Good on the fever for going straight into "We're going to win 5-4" when they got their penalty.  I thought I was the only one doing it but there was a bunch of you lower than me that were straight into it as well.

I though Moss in real trouble last night, where he's normally confident and makes miracle saves he was barely there at times.  Every time he came off his line they exploited it and we're lucky that only one of those occasions resulted in a tard goal, Ferrante's saving header on the line was beautiful to behold.

Thought it should have been closer though, we got totally exposed on defense time and again and like i said moss had a really bad game to boot, the biggest difference really was that every time Melbourne surged forward they had real intent and were dangerous, we often couldn't even get a penetrating pass and just passed it around our wings and backs when in their half.

Positives out of the game?  Biggest one for me is Smeltzie getting two more, and nearly a third denied by some unlucky deflections.  Smeltz also had a pretty good work rate, a couple of times he went forward and put pressure on their backs forcing throw-ins deep in their territory where normally the defender wouldn't have been under pressure and could have set an attacking ball.

We did also play better than last week overall, short passes were going around instead of lobbing the ball downfield (though ironically that may have been a better strategy in the wet).  Our defense just looked all at sea and Melbourne exploited it well.  Good thing Archie Thompson wasn't on the pitch really.

Still, we're lulling the other teams into a false sense of security, next week we're gonna get some payback and get that goal difference up into the positives!

The Stadium insist on playing the ads because Hyundai is paying money to the A-League to have every stadium where A-League games are played insisting on playing the annoying Hyundai kids ad. And ZM is paying money to the Phoenix for the same reason.

Even more annoying than the actual song in the ZM ads was that Pauline Gasbag couldn't actually lip-sinc! At first I thought it was a timing thing with the video and the stadium sound, but after watching it repeatedly, no, everyone else was in time, she was rubbish.

Fair call that Tony, I think Manny has a lot to learn over the coming weeks, he looks good but was found wanting last night - as were a number of players. Mossy certainly had one of his worst games.

Muscat was not help by our central defenders giving bugger all cover espeicially in those conditions, was isolated [ 1st goal ] and on several other times, Moss coming out when conceding the 3rd goal was again where  a covering player should have been. How many times last season did we concede 4 goals at home ?

Be honest, It was just a bad day at the office for our team yesterday. Melbourne beat us, some fans got soaked by the rain (Not me, thank God), just a bad day all round. The only surprise was just how bad the pitch was drainage wise. Perhaps having that big sign on the halfway spot before the game  isn't the best idea. When they moved it the water stayed.

My opions on last night.

-Cant judge any ref on that game with both sides niggling and terrible conditions (better than Williams) at least this one appered to be trying to call it straight.

-Muscat will be embarassed by that performance ("like he wasnt there") says dom post and he will raise his game.  Annoying that the "Deja Vu" headline in dom post.  Not very supportive, more what I would have expected from Sydney or Melbourne not Wellington.

-Smeltz proves his value in all situations and what he could do if we could cross with a bit more consitency.  SIGN HIM NOW.

-Mossy had a shocker, but he is only human and has been a rock for the club and will be going forward.

-6000 must be a worry for the club even in those conditions.

-If crossing/final ball in was worked on at training, it didnt show.

Personally I am absolutely gutted that we are bottom after opening two games at home and after the pre-season that we had.  BUT  we have the squad to sort out the defence and win some games that we didnt have last year.

Well, it's not really the same team we had during the pre-season, is it?  I'm not just talking about strength of play; the team is actually different.  Personally, I think not having Gao on the pitch has made a real difference.  Last night we were simply outpaced by Melbourne every time, and I felt that we lacked Gao's speed and fire.

However, I also think we need to learn how to play in the rain.  We were playing a dry game.  Ironic that we sing about how Wellington is wonderful because we have the wind, the rain, and the Phoenix, yet the Nix don't actually seem to be able to play that well in those conditions.

I'm not sure what the weather was like in Welly in the days leading up to Sunday, but in Melbourne it was horrible. Freezing cold and pissing rain nearly every day last week.

Was McKain injured? He seemed to be toubled by his knee (particularly at one point in first half) and I wondered whether this was upsetting the whole backline. He didn't seem to be giving Muscat much help in the 1st half, and so I think Durante and him might have switched sides at half time? He certainly wasn't the force in CD that he has been in previous games.
Also is there any drainage system at the ROF? Last week the pitch was just as crap despite it not even raining all day (until the 2nd half). This is meant to be a modern sports facility, so it was a bit annoying to see huge puddles in the middle of the pitch.

well we played poorly, dissappointed to go to a game and see your team outplayed like that.
5pm sunday kick off is a rubbish time too, i think that played a big part in the crowd being small.

Nix need to come train at the Aquadome Karori Park. Wharfies have been wet weather specialists in the past few seasons. Lump it into the corners for your wingers then box them in.

I thought they played some great footy  actually especially to start with. Great quick passing. Just not ideal weather for it and then got done on the counter- which is disappointing. These things happen- and we can only learn for the rest of the season.

Didn't get to sleep till 5 this morning...lightweight Muscat, that Smeltz pass, the Moss brain explosion, McKain's crunching tackle.

10% of the season has now gone.  20% of our home fixtures.  Gone.  One f**king home point.

Can we get anything out of Adelaide?

Or is our season doomed?

Agreed I also dont like sunday evening games.
Pity the crowd was so small, those that didnt come will think "Im glad I didnt go to see that" where as a win would have them wishing they were there.

i don't want to say this but i think we missed dodd running around like a headless chicken closing down every1. I think thats where we lost it Mckain and Durante were never going to be able to keep up with alsopp and i think we needed to apply more physical pressure to stop those through balls going through the backline.

I completely agree. Dodd may not always be the best with the ball at his feet but he knows where he should be on the pitch, and more often than not he provides agood first line of defence, and closes opposition's attacks down early so they can't get in behind our defence like they did yesterday all too easily. Most people on here seem to be full of praise for Johnson's performance. I'm not convinced. He is supposed to be our DM not an attacking midfielder. Where was he when Melbourne attacked? There was always a great hole between our midfield and defence.

Johnson definitely looked better on the ball and his distribution was great but for me he just doesn't have the positional awareness of Dodd. Would be disappointed if Dodd doesn't get another chance next week.

Agreed. Dragon is a Kiwi band. That's coming from an Aussie

Fever Zone made me homesick last night - spent the match in the Capital Lounge. Was VERY tempted to give up all the associated luxury to stand in the rain - but it would have been rude to the person who'd invited me.

YF were much better this week than last IMHO. So at least that's one positive...

I am very disappointed with the display yesterday by the Phoenix. What I saw in the pre season was promising but that is fast fading.

Smeltz was clinical and well done Hearfield for tireless work all day but often the final ball was not good enough. Moss was woeful, must have left his brain at home because he was out of position and even out of his box on 3 or 4 occasions in the first half. Defence didnt help much at all and were often too high and caught out. Muscat for the first time looked out of his depth. Allsopp is a very strong player with a good touch and great finish so to give him such space was unbelievable and we were lucky not to concede more. Lets face it it could have been 7-2 and we did not adjust to the wet conditions at all.

Unfortunately for the most part our attack was ponderous and slow, passes for the sake of passes while Melbourne got 9 men behind the ball and defended then hit us with a counter time and again after a number of lazy passes lead to turnovers. Conditions maybe had a part to play but this is a professional team, we go to work and they train to play football rain hail or shine. Not acceptable.

Often in fact when we looked to go wide we ran out of options due to poor runs that ended with a player with his back to goal....blind alley's that lead to back passes and then to the long ball approach. Ugly, especially when we only have one lone striker. When we did get wide which was not often enough our delivery (with the exception of Lochhead's ball to Smeltz) was woeful. Always deep to the back post and not very accurate. Its wet weather footy boys, low and hard to the near post gives us a lot more options and is very hard to defend!!! At least some variation would be nice.

Melbourne played very inteligent wet weather football soaked up pressure and waited for that wayward pass which came all too often and turned them into counter attacks time and again.

For Adelaide next week we need Gao back in  and playing out wide and using his pace to get into space behind the defence and get balls into the box. Bertos to come in, lose the attitude and same again, get wide left and deliver those quality balls we know he can when he takes it to the line. Balls to feet or to head because Smeltz is a great target but we need some inteligence in the runs that are being made off him. We have great centre backs but the need to sit deeper.

If we dont concede soft goals through schoolboy errors then we only need to score once.

Have a good week at practice.

just read the last 6 pages,

agree with -

 melbourne played more intelligently

manny M lacked strength

troy looks the goods in a more forward role

etc etc

intrigued that in those six pages no-one seemd to be concerned that we have twice now conceded within 2-3 mins of starting the second half

is this a just sickenening coincidence or is there a need for ricki to do things differently during the half-time break?

I think all 3 of our midfielders have had decent individual performances but ive been disappointed with the midfield as a group and feel weve been outplayed there twice in a row.
Bring back Brown.

let's not forget we've actually done just as well as we did in the pre season so far. We drew with queensland(1-1) and lost to melbourne.

I think we are a much better side than we showed in the first 2 games but we have had a real wake up call. I think we may have been a bit guilty of believing our own press over the off season recruitment and pre-season cup results.

As well as we recruited it's easy to forget we lost Filipe and Aloisi and they have both left big holes to fill. We were also playing weakened sides in the pre-season cup.

We don't have any Millers, Allsopps or other match winners (Smeltz would be closest) but we do have a well balanced team of good players who, in patches, have shown what their capable of.

I think we will come right but we really need a good result against Adelaide next week or the Mariners at home on the 14th or I think crowd numbers and support will start to suffer.

With Gao back, Mulligan and Brown hopefully available and a sense of urgency I'm sure we can turn around the bad start to the season.

Let's not panic but clearly Herbert, Durante, Smeltz and other leaders in the squad are going to need to focus minds on getting results.

seriously questions need to be asked about the tactics. There didn't seem to be any, it looked like the usual get out there and play boys, if we pass enough we might get a goal.

Ricki please give us a defensive team we can be proud of and only then will we consistently win matches. The best teams in the world are always the ones that concede the least amount of goals. How can you win when you leak 4 goals at home - awful display of defending.

Would Dodd have made a difference yesterday as DM. Frankly no and that is not because he is not a good player, he is but he a good defender not a good midfielder. I thought Johnson and Ferrante were two of he better performers and Melborne won it by by-passing the mid-field and getting it forward quickly into the wing channels and two soft goals from Moss did not help.

We were awful - you know things are bad when every time the opposition have the ball they look like scoring.
I think playing away from home next week will do the boys good.
