Bye Smeltz big head, next year we'll play a completely different type of football without him.

Bye Mossy.

Good Season though

I still love him, big head and all... if a striker's not selfish he won't score 12 goals in a season.

Well, it's been a good season. We just started a bit slow for the season. I am going to miss Smeltz and Moss next season. At least 5th place will hush most of the aussies protesters of a NZ team in the A league.

Mossy will be sorely missed, as will Smeltz. That's two big holes to fill.

Much as it has been agonising watching at times, I think it's been a pretty successful season. At least we're fighting for more than the wooden spoon at this time of the season.

Bring on next season!

we have been competitive and attacking against the top two clubs and didnt give them anything. both games we were unlucky not to get anything from them. Smeltz has shown he is replaceable and its not gonna surprise me when Simon tops him or equals him. bring on a faster more direct striker

Good season in the end will always regret those dropped points against perth and queensland though

Ferrante was abysmal.  I know we were out of subs but we should have taken him off anyway.

Costa may be fast for his size but his legs are too small and in comparison with the other players he's slow.

Kwasnik should have had a much larger role in our season.

Ha - good luck with that. Though at least they'll have less ammo. While we'll have Glory & the Jets.
Not to mention Sydney ;)

One of our new replacement strikers needs to be about 6'4" then he and Costa could be the new Keegan and Toshack.

Yup our season is done but to be fair we have discovered some players and found others let us down. Moss and Smeltz enhanced their reputation, Sigmund is the find of the season and Muscat came from VPL to hold the right back spot with Costa in the last 2 and Hearfield showing us that they definitely have a big future at the club. McKain showed us that he is the rock.

Paston showed us flashes as did Brown, Dodd, and Dura. Ferrante had some moments through the mid part but fell away dreadfully in the last 4 games he played.

Disappointment would have to be Lockhead. From Middlesborough to getting schooled regularly... and to be honest I expected a little more from Bertos and Daniel although injury never helped Daniel. Kwasnik was last years Cleberson. All trumpet, no noise.

Unusual points: Who would have thought that Gao would have been so bad and that we got Fred playing for us?

Roll on next year!!! Diego, and Lia back too!

Oh well we didn't come last, great match boys shame about the result, but no one can complain you didn't try, that would have to be one of the better away performances of the season shame it ended how it did

Even by the amazingly low standards he has set over the past couple of months, Ferrante had a f**king shocker. I can only hope McKain got subbed cos he was injured cos Mickey F was waving a big banner that said "Boss, I'm sh*t. Take me off before I hurt myself". Jeez.

Siggy was absolutely magnificent tonight. Superb.

Loads of ifs and buts and maybes, but overall I reckon it was a good season.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

The performance by Ferrante is one of the worst ive seen at the a league level.

Herbets mentality going into the game and right throughout was far to negative in a game they had to win

mckain spent far to lng on the ball all the time and for a guy wh has done so well in recent games didnt do anything for us

Muscat is contantly caught out of position and today showed how bad he really was.

Daniel is on holiday.... didnt do anything tonight

When was the last time smeltz scored?

Gotta give costa a chance!

Had ample opportunities to score

Herbert is the reason they didnt qualify vfor the playoffs

sorry, but lochhead's been absent all year. the one time he actually did some defending, he trotted back and let thompson's shot trickle over the line. he's been covered by the central defenders all season while he gently trots back. you'd be lucky if he's broken a sweat all season. has he been given some sort of free licence to roam the left side, but not defend....???

I don't really wont to get into a whole scapegoat thing though. Was only that goal which pissed me off, otherwise I thought he had a bloody good game tonight. If he shows that quality next season I will be well happy with the bloke.

85 minutes last week and another 85 tonight. I think that's a chance or two

Losing 1-0 and drawing 1-1 with the two top teams despite shooting ourselves in the foot sometimes, is no mean feat. I am proud that we shpwed this season we can play with heart and skill and determination from time to time and even when we got seriously beaten, our heads never dropped unlike last season.

Okay.. This week. No attacks on players.
Great turn out at the Kings tonight Draper was there too. (Had a little chat after)
We can only be happy with tonights game. Ill agree. some shocking passes and Ill have a go at Ferrante later in the week. Subs were very confusing and werent the best choice.
But I am f**kING PROUD of the boys tonight and all season.
5th place is very respectable.

I STILL LOVE THE PHOENIX.

Did you miss that last goal LG?

Anyways, top effort from the guys. Showed heart in that 2nd half (well some did).

Well done Phoenix - an improvement on last season, and something to build on next year.
While I agree that Muscat and Sigmund (especially) have good finds for the club, I think McKain is underrated on the forum and has been immense since moving to DM.
Since the 0-3 debacle in Adelaide, the team has played with the passion we demanded, if not always with the ability and intelligence (at times) we'd like.
Our defense has been generally solid as has midfield. Looking forward to next season, our biggest problem has been a lack of midfield creativity and an attacking edge(Smeltz aside). Tonight was not the only game this season we domninated without looking like scoring (Perth twice, 9-man Newcastle, second half last week, last game v Queensland).
On the flipside there were a few games we got away with points we shouldn't have (two games v CCM spring to mind)

Despite being disappointed with narrowly missing the playoffs, as fans we can be proud of the team, and feel postive about what the club is achieving on and off the field.

One parting shot - having missed the playoffs by so little this season, it is not unreasonable of the fans to demand/expect to see the Phoenix make the top 4 next year.wolfman2009-01-24 00:25:51

Complete and absolute drivel.

That was about the most positive I think the Phoenix have ever played with their fairly meagre attacking resources. We went forward with commitment, speed and skill for nearly the entire second half (after bossing most of the first half too), but were let down by that perennial problem of the lack of a true playmaker in the mids and a poor final ball.

To say we were in any way negative is almost libel.
