Fantastic review Piney, everything was spot on.

If enthusiasm counted for anything, George would have made the team every week. As it was, his energy and exuberance werent enough to mask the fact that he simply wasnt a very good footballer

well said

Right on the money Piney. Only thing I'd do is swap the Phoenix goal of the season. I'd rate Felipe's goal before Elrich's, because of the quality of his run with the ball to set up the shot.

Excellent summary of the season.

Who said the following? "ball come... change feet... bang... goallllllllllll"

My friend was really taken by our response to Hyuk-Su Seo. Got to they point that whenever they got possession she was yelling "give it so Seo"!!!  so that "I can watch you guys react"....

She more or less adopted him as her fave player...

There is a major error in the review. Clebs was superb and should have got ten out of ten. NO ARGUING. OK???   OK?

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

My then-gf was the same...she was feeling sorry for him! No wonder why it didn't last

Excellent artice with the only 2 exceptions in being rating Dodd & Brown higher than they should be. You go back over the comical defensive happenings throughtout the season and Dodd will be one of the two Phoenix players involved on every occassion. As for Brown, first season nerves? Capable of so much yet didn't really deliver other than gobbing off much like Muscrat (But Muscrat played to is abilitis).

don't think it was nerves LG, he just never got a settled run

as for your claim re verbals and comparisons with Muscat, Muscat got sent off, largely I'd suggest because Timmo had his number

True Tigers. I don't know why players like these two insist on giving a ref so much verbal when usually they know they did wrong themselves.

i dont understand why footballers feel it necessary to talk/ abuse refs as much as they do, but thats for a different thread i guess

Great review Piney, the player ratings are spot on from my perspective.  Thanks for the memories refreshed with your month by month reviews and a wonderful summary of our rollercoaster ride through A-League V3.

I've had a blast with every home game meeting as many of you chaps as possible, sharing the passion for our beautiful game and creating the best supported club/team in NZ sport!  Enjoyed a a fair few away games at the Fever Lounge and at the Four Kings too - memorable nights were the 2-1 win over Sydney away and the 3-2 win over Newcastle away....

Topped off with a brilliant away trip to Melbourne with a top bunch of blokes & Feverette (but the worst 45 mins of Phoenix football) and I'm itching to see the positive changes and for us smoking into finals football in V4!!

We'll be coming....we'll be coming!!!

A few of the player ratings are a little (lot?) generous.

On the other hand, I think George has been harshly rated tbh.

Excellent review of the season Piney.

Players ratings were pretty much spot on, If I had to disagree on one I thought Lia didn't deserve to score so well, he was lucky not to get a few red cards for some of his tackling.

Nice review and well written, it was nice to go through all the performances again in my head then think about player ratings, and they were pretty much spot on :)

Agree. If you think about it, 5 out of 10 is a pass mark, and I certainly don't think that Old came anywhere near having a passable season, nor did Elrich.
Brilliantly written piece though.

In my reading of such ratings over the years "5" has always seemed to indicate a poor performance, with 6 being a (barely?) tolerable effort and 7 being a decent outing

the ratings are always skewed upwards  e.g. there are always more 8, 9 and 10s than 3, 2, or 1s

Except for the under the "Match of the Season" Awards the Round Eighteen winner was the Phoenix not Newcastle!!!

Apart from that. All Good reading!!!

self-assessment - always a bit lacking in rigour

and, no, that's not an offer to come and help with the scoring (in either sense of the word)

I too reckon most of the ratings are a bit on the high side (by 0.5-1) in most cases, esp for a team that finished 8th...

I'm not as enamoured by our Brazilians as everyone else. For me they do too little and drift in and out of games, or don't turn up at all sometimes...

Should of given Paston a rating, Brownlie got one and he probably played less than Paston did. Paston - 3
