Oi oi, what was the formation that we played??  Am I right in thinking it was more of a 4-3-3?

Normo's coming home

It was a 4-3-3.  I agree with your rating of Muscat, who also played well in the home game against Sydney and deserves to retain his place for the Jets match on the 23rd.
Selhurst Park, 25 January 1995
What else could he have done?

OOE - pretty much spot on, except the ref. Just because he's equally poor for both sides doesn't make him good, just consistent.
This is the guy who sent Gao off three times for non-existent blood, but today missed whatever it was that required Busch to get his smurf hat at halftime.

For me, that's preferable. I'm sure players like to know where they stand with a ref too, whether he's a disciplinarian or not. The worst ones are those who make any game a lottery with irrational, impulsive calls and who 'even up' the decisions (see: Mathew Breeze).

Anyway, Oi Oi, I'm very happy with your range of 7s and 8s. Terrific team performance.

On Paston: did anyone notice how happy Moss was looking after the game...?

I've just checked - looks like I got this wrong - I swear Zetter sent Gao off for blood v Sydney, but according to the ALeague, it was Chris Beath.

Apologies to Zetter.

For me there's nothing worse than a ref missing basic fouls (e.g. Muscat being tripped on the sideline). Players on both sides get frustrated, and it leads to more niggle rather than flowing game.

Paston 4 I stand by my gut feeling that he is the most unco keeper ever and Moss should always start
Manny 7 Sometimes questionable defensively but good going forward
Dodd 8.5 Was great tonight, especially considering he obviously tweaked something at the start. Distribution a step up from usual.
Siggy 7 Also sometimes questionable in defence - think he has got used to being right back
Lochie 7.5 Had a terrific 2nd half. 1st half, not so much but still didn't do much wrong. (though he got nutmegged by old man Corica)
Leo 8.5 Thought he was the impetus for many of our attacks, especially in the 2nd half
Brown 9 Was an absolute machine
McKain 8.5 Did very very well and looked the most comfortable on the ball I have seen him since pre season v Melbourne
Ferrante 7 Probably the only disappointment for me apart from Paston. Showed a lot v Perth when he was subbed on in the last 15 but never reached those kind of heights here. Passing was often wayward.
Smeltzy 8 Ran his ass off all game and was a major reason why Sydney were always under pressure
Hearfield 6.5 Goes in and out of games too much for my liking. Never did anything special.
Costa 6.5 Thought he worked well pressuring Sydney - especially after we got the 2nd and had to hang on. Sprinted and made a couple of important tackles.

Ricki Did very well. Finaly we pushed up the park instead of waiting back and having no impetus.
Ref sh*thouse. The assistant ref called the penalty - good work to him. The Ref was terrible for both sides.
Yellow Fever on tour - Great

I'm beginning to think we play sh*t against other teams just so it's a lot more fun beating Sydney everytime!

they're going to be catching hell in NSW tonight.

Threads like this are a tab rubbish right after the game.

Win and the players get 7s & 8s
Lose and the players get 5s & 6s

Probably should wait a day so you are not giving scores in euphoria.

Trouble is we also seem to give far to many players 7s and 8s.Yep they played better than they have done last nite, but did some of you miss the amount of ball our midfield gave away with bad distribution.

Did anyone see any yellow cards given? I missed part of the game, but I thought it was card free, am I right?
Permalink Permalink

Watched the whole game  and am 99% sure it was cardless.

Paston - 6 - I'm getting headaches trying to decide who I want to see next week, but that's for another thrread. Let in a shot he had a decade to judge and didn't have half the communication needed.

Sex Panther - 7.5 - Unbelievable pace and urgencey all up and down the right, exactly like last time, somehow I want him found a place in the starting lineuo next week.
Siggy - 7 - Sound defensively, but struggled to communicate with Paston.
Dodd - 7 - Very strong and covered Lochhead's attacking runs well, and agreeed with Valeo, some of his best passing work.
Lochhead - 7 - Terrific attaicking imput, and dealt with a lot of pressure coming down from Bling's right. With the way he was breezing back to catch up with the Sydney attacks shows just how fast Rukavitskya is.

Brown - 8 - Incredible workrate, great asist and was a true box to box dynamo.
McKain - 7 - Won the ball well just like always, but must start getting his head up quicker and getting a pass forward, his dilly-dallying cost us a few potential counter-attacks.
Furryante - 7.5 - Great touches and ditribution, he's becoming an important attacking player for us with his willingness to have a go. He may have cheated but I am loving his mo'

Bertos - 8 - Great attacking runs, did well alongside Smeltzy and Got that GOOOAAAALLL!!!
Smeltzy - 7 - Pressurised the Sydney defence, ran well  with the ball and dealt with the pressure of the penalty with ease. Needs to be more central but him, superleo and Hearfield, switching positions like they did kept Shane clear of his usual heavy marking.
Hearfield - 6.5 - Had a good imput and is another player who will shoot, but we had better options sitting on the bench and for the life of me I can't understand why Daniel didn't start.

Ricki did well with the tactics, except for Daniel not starting, if this keeps happening I wouldn't be surpried at all if he left next year. Subs should have been made earlier when we were baginning to tire.
You know we belong together...

Great TEAM effort....everyone did their bit. I was getting a bit worried with 15 to go as with all that running some of the lads were tiring. Thought that Ricki could have got some fresh legs on a little earlier.
Particularly liked the way Brown and McCain bossed the midfield.

About that team effort thing, I got slightly dewy-eyed seeing that shot after the game of the lads collectively jumping up and down in the dressing room. There was a lot of pride and obvious team spirit there. They all know what a great performance for the club that was in response to some heavy crticiism during the week.

Also, nice to see Ricki at least trying to compete with Kosmina in the screaming/swearing stakes during the game.

good to see a bit of 'depth' in the squad with Manny M, Troy, and ferrante all worthy of their spots

I think Manny must have been reading "Siggy's Big Book of Passion on the Park" during his time on the sidelines, he certainly looked fired up from the start

also great to see a bit of form from Lochy - he might well have benefited from not having Leilei in front of him (or on his arse, somewhere in back play)

glad Timmo had a good one,

re Ferrante - yep some of his balls go astray but he can open things up  (so to speak)

Come on, paston is alright, but a blunder like that is a must win gameis inexcusable isnt it? especially with just as good if not better keeper on the bench. Other wise Good ratings

Lochhead your not being serious? He can't cross for sh*t.. You'll notice our best two crosses came from Smeltz and Brown... not Lhead.

I really thought that the Nix worked as a team yesterday!
We dominated the pitch with 4 -3 -3, we need to keep that formation, and Leo, he has redeemed himself in my eyes!

Great effort by the team - spirit and passion, that'll win games, but..........

The corners are still sh*te. Can no one kick it as far as the box? We were saved by The Blings ineptitude in front. Wing Nut McFlynn missed a sitter and that blunder by Siggy nearly cost us, thank God Brosque butchered it.

Manny 7 Ran a marathon

Siggy 8 Couple of times he was caught, but thats always going to be the case when playing the pressure game
Lochie 8 Intense going forward
Leo 8 Ignited quite a bit, and he scored
Brown 8 Solid, decent passes
McKain 8  See above
Ferrante 7 Ran heaps
Smeltzy 7 Penalty, otherwise not that threatning
Hearfield - 6 - Didnt do that much, ran heaps

Herbert 10 Cannot complain 1 bit.

Ah, the joys of over- rating after a win, it's all good fun.
How does one get a 7 with the comment -"penalty, otherwise not that threatening"

I was going to give him a 6, but wanted to avoid the wrath of smeltz-lovers. It was a solid team performance that got us a 2-1 win away from home, an average of about 7.5 aint that unrealistic.

I didn't see any 10's, especially from Troy. And Costa did what exactly? Crossed the ball behind the goal with no pressure, but otherwise........??
Good reading though

Costa gets that rating because I want to see him play more

See I really don't undedrstand this one

Sigmund is a known centre back and his most natural position and does an admirable effort in learning and playing at right back. Solid, but has lots to learn.

Durante played a fair bit at right back at Newcastle and has done ok at CB.

Can someone please explain why its not screamingly obvious to leave Sigmund at CB and move Durante to the right? I think both will be increasingly more effective in those roles.
