Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

God what a miserable way to start the weekend. Well at least we don't have the double whammy of having deserved to win as well.

Warner 5 Three poor clearances gave the dogs chances
Manny 7 One of the few to do well
Dura 6 Did pretty well
Griffiths 5.5 Did well enough until poor marking led to the final goal
Lochie 6 Not as strong as last week, but linked well with Daniel
Leo 4.5 Disappointing
Timmy 4 Too often wrong side of opponent, meaning fouls given away. Destroyed the hope of the head bandage.
Smith 6 Good covering in front of back four
Daniel 7 Useful crosses. Why on Earth was he subbed off??
Greenie 6 Well looked after by the defence, except for very well taken goal
Sanchez 5.5 Very quiet except for the delightful pass for Greenie's goal

Wardy 6 Better than last week, (wouldn't be hard)
Tssat 5.5 Tried hard but Daniel staying on would have been a beter bet

What do yo think?

Warner 6 - some dodgy clearances. Probably no chance with goals
Muscat 5 - not his best game, some misplaced passes and needless fouls
Durante 6 - reasonably solid as usual
Griffiths 5 - looked knackered towards the end, and slow
Lochhead 5 - not too great. One decent cross I remember
Smith 6 - some decent passes but didn't have a lot of influence on things
Brown 5 - Missing in action for the 245th time
Sanchez 7 - tried to make something happen, not helped by the incompetence around him
Bertos 4 - did nothing of note whatsover
Daniel 3 - lost the ball almost everytime he had it. Summed up by bending a late corner out of play. Crap.
Greenacre 7 - Scored. Feeding off scraps as usual and did his best.

Ward 5 - average, not much time on
Tsatt 3 - only thing I remember was a horrific attempt at a shot that almost knocked out a floodlight

Oi Oi, I think you should be giving Ricki a rating each week too...he should be rated on how he performs, tactics, subs etc...I would give him a 6. Limited squad but still tactically naive. Those crosses were getting frustrating

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

The twitter feed said that they through ball for the goal was from Brown, but here it was said to be from Sanchez - who is right?

Pretty sure it was Sanchez. Brown had a dirty great bandage on his head, stood out like a sore...er...head. Wasn't him.

calling our squad limited is naive at best! we had just enough to field a full squad (15) Ricki had no choices whatso ever!

Twitter is wrong,  feed was from Sanchez.  The goals are available on the A  League site

playing 5 at the back at home...Smith was always so deep, thought he was a centre back......probably because Dura and Griffiths were so poor as a unit...they couldn't get further apart if they tried...plus we defended so deep making it so much easier for them

agree with most here but thought Dura was not up to his usual standard [ miss Siggy along side  so much]....plus they had 2 up front and Smith's covering left us so short upfront..? could Ricki not see this...Tsst???????? Daniel should have stayed on, but was probably stuffed

You have to salute Greenacre.....that guy has a heart of a lion. Every game he gets bombarded with high balls flying in from every direction.....he chases after everything like a fox terrier on P.

Then he finally gets a quality ball along the deck and he slots it no problems. Makes you wonder how many goals he would score if we played like the Roar.

I didn't think Griffiths was that bad....he looked composed. He did some good stuff in the air and he distributed well from the back. The second goal came from Smith failing to track Hearfields run into the box....you could hear Durante scream "cover him" but it was too late.

My mate and I watched this and a couple of things really stood out and I have to take a shot at Ricki for this. (which I do not like to do)

Zwaanswijk 6ft5
Greenacre 5ft 0

Why do we play the aerial ball into the small striker then? The only time we looked threatening was when we whipped them in low and fast.... kinda like a little Judas used to do for us.

Grumpy old bastard alert

was calling for Paston up front in the last 15 and actually, other options considered, wasn't really joking!

exactly- the other targets Sanchez and Brown. Not exactly towering strong jumpers either.

Also when we played a ball in behind there wasn't anyone going near post.

Griffiths was fairly bad I thought. got owned by Ibini all night. was ok in the air. All you can say though is for our back up CB he's better than Musa.martinb2011-11-05 11:06:07

Just sharing some tho's ... this is from the Mariners Forum and this post [was not mine] but summed up my take from a Mariners supporter.... Last year we started scratchy as well ... this year the midfield + Rose don't seem to be as fluid as last year but as the poster says they are working their way back into form..

Loved it! Really hard fought and deserved win. Windy Wellington is a difficult place to go and get three points so top marks for effort and perseverance. The football still isnt flowing but we still managed to create many more opportunities then they did. The possession play was almost non-existent, there were too many long balls, poor decisions were made and execution was lacking but what showed through, epitomised by the ceaseless effort of Matty Simon, was the desire, the determination and the unquenchable spirit. Two wins on the bounce should mean greater confidence and better football. At last, I am excited again.

Mat Ryan was virtually a spectator such was the dominance of the defence, Bojics aberration aside. He was faultless in the air but, did I espy a slight miskick? He is human after all!

Bojic WYSIWYG the full package is super athlete but not much of a brain. He is relentless is chasing and tackling but fell asleep to allow Greenacre through.

Rose not playing like a prospective Socceroo but is slowly getting better. One superbly timed run would have put him clear on goal but Zwaanswijks pass was over hit.

Wilko the mortar that holds the bricks together in the defence. A consummate A league defender. The commentators comparing of him with Tobin has some merit. Is a great calming influence on the team.

Zwaanswijk an absolute brute at the back. Fierce and frightening to play against. Virtually unbeatable.

Griffiths another who is working back to form. One brilliant turn to allow Bozanic to set up Rose was pure class. Doesnt mind getting stuck in either.

McGlinchey the epitome of if you arent playing well you dig in and work your socks off. Has yet to rediscover his magic but you cant fault the attitude.

Bozanic another for whom it is yet to click. Again though, doesnt hide. When he clicks so will Rose.

McBreen the blue collar worker, sleeves rolled up, putting all in for the team. He aint pretty to watch but he got though a power of good work today.

Simon didnt stop running from go to whoa. Must have been a hell of a cross-country runner at school. Fiercely competitive and thoroughly deserved his goal.

Ibini-Isei a rising star. Doesnt always take the right decision but is impressively confident on the ball, good enough and quick enough to go past defenders. Unselfish for the team but selfish enough to create his own opportunities. And he knows where the goal lies.

Hearfield. Very impressed by the work of this player. Looks up for it as soon as he comes on, is quick, skilful and intelligent. He will be pressuring McGlinchey and Bojic for a starting spot and if he gets it he will be hard to shift.

MoM Bernie but close run with Simon, McBreen and GriffithsMidfielder2011-11-05 12:12:27

Yes it was a great run into the box and pull back by Troy. However few defences will allow him that space this season. He hardly ever had that opportunity playing for us.
Pretty well thought out ratings for the dogs.

This!

Durante and Griffiths were static when Troy got around Smith. Didn't even look like they were covering Simon at all.

Unusual to say that about Durante.

Brown not possible to provide any kind of through ball and he is our attacking midfielder.
Time for Ricky to take him sky tandem skydiving and leave the chute behind..

I would bump up Alex Smith, got back and put in some crucial tackles, and some good passes in midfield as well.

I would mark Daniel down to about a 3. He would start by beating a player or making a bit of a run but then lose the ball again or thump it into the body of a Mariners defender. Seems a great guy and has given the Nix great service over a long period but does not seem to be up to A-League standard any more.

I thought Daniel was combining well with Lochy and Sanchez.

Agreed. Almost anything even mildly threatening Daniel was involved in.

I accept that some people are anti-Daniel, because let's face it he is very slow and it does seem a bit ludicrous that he is apparently not fit enough to ever play 90 minutes.

On the other hand, for me Daniel has been a big part of our impressive, if unsuccessful, attacking footy in the Jets/Glory/victory games. Last night I don't think anyone rose above average but Daniel was far from the worst. In fact I thought he was more effective in the 2nd half and at least looked hungry for the ball when many others appeared disinterested. It's one of those small things I know but I liked it that he was running to take throw-ins and constantly looking to work angles rather than dawdling with stooped shoulders.

Frankly I was surprised he was replaced by Tsattalios who unfortunately added precisely nothing to our attack.

And 9 times out of 10 the move broke down at Daniel...

I rated Daniel well because he combined well with Lochie and Sanchez and he looked to make things happen. Exactly what we want from our attackers.

But he didn't make things happen because his final ball was absolutely woeful.

I'm not taking away from his effort or enthusiasm for the cause, I just don't think he is good enough to be first choice every week. I realise there is nobody else right now though.

Was/is better than Leo and Brown.
Can't see how we've been watching the same 4 games of football if you think otherwise.
But I still agree that he would ideally not be in our starting eleven. As a sub for Ifill or Pantelis/pantelidis would be nice, but that's obviously not going to happen. Can't be bothered looking up what his name actually is, seripesos probably just got dicked by his agent and the reds, knowing that he had a pretty F'd ACL. I hope we insured that, but it seems unlikely.

This. He linked up well and was involved, but then lost the ball. It wasn't due to lack of effort.

No, probably team physio analysed CCM  and gave instructions to the Nix players to play wide, cross the (useless) high ball every time and hope for the best...

Yep!
