Player ratings v Jets

The FFA have been very positive this week, Carlos and Stein in their team of the week, and Carlos the player of the week, and described in glowing terms.....

Carlos Hernandez (Wellington Phoenix)

The Costa Rican star is doing his best impression of a decent red wine, improving and maturing with age. Despite being on the wrong side of 30, Hernandez has enjoyed his best season in the A-League, flourishing under the possession based game plan that Ernie Merrick employs. Netting his fourth goal in his last three matches, Wellington will be feared if King Carlos can continue this hot streak until the season’s end.

Stein Huysegems (Wellington Phoenix

The Belgian striker’s two season in the A-League could not be more different than chalk and cheese. Last season, he struggled as the focal point of an attack that was fed by long balls, scoring only 5 times in 22 matches. This season, he is netted a goal every two matches and is leading the scoring charts. His goal against Newcastle showed the confidence he is omitting, perfectly placing a shot just inside the post from the edge of the area. Along with Costa Rican duo, Carlos Hernandez and Kenny Cunningham, the big Belgian will be crucial in the Phoenix’s rise to the finals.

Two points:

"the confidence he is omitting"?

"Despite being on the wrong side of 30"

  • Gerrard (33)
  • Giggsy-wigsy (40)
  • Ifill (30 in 2009/10)

I didn't take that from his comments at all. I just believed what he said made sense and seemed more logical than just bullsh*t to mentally build up a young player.

Going back to the match-thread now and the opinion is very divided, so I'm hardly the only person saying Brindell-South looked promising. For the record I agreed with the 5.5 rating but I wouldn't say "he was poor" as a general comment on his performance. He was targeted all day and did very well under the circumstances.

Huysegems definitely should've scored from that cross too.

I've been a bit surprised by the overwhelming praise of him, I thought he was ok, did well in patches and no so well in others, it's telling that both goals came down his side.

He's not quite the 'second coming' which seems to be thrust of some...

Not really - second goal was his fault, but there was nothing more that he could do on the first goal.  Once Siggy had not fouled the bloke it was 2 on 1, and he had to close down the chap with the ball.

I also think that he was at fault on the 2nd goal but what a cracker of a finish it was. 8/10 the finish wouldn't have been so good and he would of survived it. They obviously targeted his side [as you would] and I think he did quite ok in his debut.

Not the first fullback who has had a winger turn inside him  and score in that sort of position. How many times has Ifill done that to opposing full backs? Possibly if anything Siggy left him a little isolated and could perhaps have been a yard or two closer to him.

The first goal he could not have done much to prevent. He was positioned exactly where you would want your fullback to be placed and once Caravella went past Siggy, who probably should have taken a Yellow card for the team, he did everything you could reasonably expect.

Aside from about a 10 minute period in the second half he contained Goodwin fairly well all match.

Was a little surprised at the way he was cramping up for such a young bloke. Guess it highlights the disadvantages faced in our squad members having little opportunity to play 90 hard minutes on a regular basis,

For a first outing, despite him being Australian and a Ginger I would give him a solid pass mark.

I thought he looked pretty good on the ball and not out of place at all. He did let Goodwin go past him for the second, almost invited him to cut inside, but the actual goal was a very nice strike and he tackled him several other times during the game. Could obviously do with a lot more game time though. It's good to see everyone except Watson, who only just got signed, has been involved now.

Yup it is a fine line "showing a winger the line" because if you get it wrong and they cut inside you are left horribly wrong footed. Thats where you need your centrebacks to be a little closer to you if possible.

I thought he looked comfortable passing the ball, but didnt see him once feel like he could run with the ball at his feet. From my recolection, he would pass and move (which is a good thing), but wouldnt move with the ball at his feet. Surely both are needed at this level

I'm struggling to remember but did he take a defender on on the outside for the early cross to Stein? I think he did but could be wrong. His first instinct is to pass, but I think that was more option taking than ability. You don't really want your debutant right back to be running at players in his own half (unless they're lunging in) so it more comes down to how often and quickly he was getting forward into space. He didn't bomb forward the way Fenton does but a lot of that could simply come back to match fitness, which I mentioned needs to improve.

Caira 6 Was better when he went into the back line

Something I noticed for the first two goals... they were both the result of Caira making tackles in the final 3rd (ish). First one Caira tackles takes a couple of touches inside, passes to Huysegems, Huysegems passes to Hernandez, Hernandez scores.
Second goal, Caira tackles takes a couple of touches inside, passes to Hernandez, Hernandez passes to Huysegems, Huysegems scores.
So I think he showed some usefulness.
Obviously he had a couple of chances he could have done better on, but I can see him being better than say, Leo as a midfield sub.

On the cramping issue; prior to the reserves game vs HBU, he was receiving a lot of attention on his legs by the physio, so he might of been having some ongoing issues going into the Jets match.
