Oh dear, gutted in the end. Must admit they did a good job keeping us at bay.

Paston 6.5 Didn't have a lot to do, a lot safer than Crowther
Troy 7 Earned us the man advantage, great taking them on seemed to defend pretty well too.
Dura 6 Good defensively, does he ever get an attacking header on target?
Siggy 6 Did wel but bloody nearly scored an oggie
Lochie 7.5 His best showing for ages. Great runs, defended confidently. His nutmeg in their box a classic.
Leo 6.5 Quiet, but nice cross for goal
Timmo 8 Excellent in midfield, great header.
Lia 5.5 Gave ball away at crucial times, silly yellow, good apart from that
Daniel 6 Not in the game as much as wanted
Caceras 6 Did well, but had a few chances to really have a go at them and pulled back.
Ifill 6 Tried a bit too much on his own
Costa 5 Off sides, gave the ball away.
McKain good to see him back. Bad timing for the sub?
Ricki - if it was his decision to pull back grrr. Maybe it was just Melb playing with desperation.

What do you think?

Just back from game.  Pretty much agree.  Slightly generous for Brown, but a nice goal.

Really? i thought Caceres didnt have a good game he stayed to far left he ended up getting cramped with lochy he needed to make more runs and use pace instead or skill like troy

Paston 6.5
Troy 7
Dura 6.5
Siggy 5.5 (where was he when the attack on our goal resulted in Hearfields knee injury. Was that way for a bit of the game, out of position)
Lochie 7.5
Leo 6.5
Timmo 7.5
Lia 5.5
Daniel 6
Caceras 6
Ifill 6.5
Costa 5

Curious game from Lia - awful for the first 10 and last 10 but excellent in between.

Hearfield and Lochhead very good. Liked the way we were using the width of the park to bring these guys into the fray. That was one area where Lia was outstanding I thought.

Troy was devasatating in the first half  - MoM for me

Leo got through some good defensive work in centre mid in last 20 mins

timmo had another good outing until giving the ball away in lead up to their scoring corner

I'll have to look at the replay - I thought that was Lia.

Hearfield's effort to charge across and intercept Hernandez's shot with the goal gaping was tremendous.

not sure that paston looked any safer than crowther on this performance...far too generous for brown...troy deserved more

Paston 6.5 - showed exceptional technique in picking the ball out of his own net.
Hearfield 9- Superb going forward. My man of the match. didnt have  a lot to do at the back but what he did have to do he did well. Also completely responsible for the sending off of ward and the substitution of kemp.
Sigmund 7 - One or two dodgy moments in the first half but a good solid game and strong in the tackle as always.
Durante - 7 Good game aswell except for that backpass.
Lochhead 8 - One of his better games, defended well and showed real intent to try and get in behind the melbourne defence.
Daniel - 6.5 - Drifted in and out at times, but had his moments and a few decent balls into the box.
Bertos - 7- More in the game than daniel , but showed a real reluctance to shoot in some really good positions.
Caceres 6 - Had a decent game , but slows the play down too much, and didnt threaten to get in behind the defence and run at players enough for me.
Brown 7.5 - Had a good game winning the ball high up the park to start some good counter attacks as well as a well taken goal. However marked down slightly for his role in giving away the corner, delayed the pass to lia much too long as well as the fact that he had options (to feet ) further upfield, ultimatley making Lia's job much more difficult than it needed to be.
Lia - 5.5 - Has played well in recent weeks but unfortunately not tonight. Will bear the brunt of the criticism for Melbourne's late equaliser, unfairly IMO, (where was the marking?!!!) but gave the ball away too often as well as having a couple of poor effort's from edge of the area.
Iffil-  8 - threatening with the ball as always, could have had a goal on another day and we would have had a 2-0 lead.
Overall decent performance but same old same old (fortunately not of the steven variety)
Dominated and dictated play but created very few clear cut chances and shied away from longer range shots, only really looked threatening when we got in behind the defence from wide areas as we struggled to create anything through the middle. To many crosses from deep into a crowded box with no target man/large target to aim for. Extremely predictable in attack and once again suffered from a decent performance but an inability to create and a slim 1 goal lead.

I've actually dropped Siggy down another 1 to 4.5 for the punch to the chops to Leijer. in the penalty area no less. Are we really that dumb?

I'm concerned about the subjectivity of this rating system.  If Tim Brown gets an 8 for his performance today, then how much room does that leave for describing Torres playing at his best.

Therefore, I have devised a new, scientific unit for football ratings: the milliLochy (mL).  If a player is rated at 1 mL, then Lochy himself would have played the match in that position 1000 times better.  2mL means that Lochy would have played the match in that position 500 times better.  etc.

Now that we understand that, here are my player ratings for the match just passed:

Paston 10mL
Troy 15mL
Durante 13mL
Ziggy 9mL
Lochy 1000mL (= one Tony Lochhead)
Bertos 12mL
Brown 14mL
Lia 12mL (inconsistent)
Daniel 12mL
Caceras 11mL
Ifill 10mL (wasteful)
Costa 10mL
El Presidente 8mL (barely present)

His average goals are less though, even though he had nothing to do most of the time. That means he is better,no matter what else happened.

Hearfield gets my man of the match.  He was quieter in the second half but still good.

Great to see Lochhead play well.  Bertos wasn't bad but seemed to run out of ideas.

Looked far worse than average apart from the one cross he managed to get right. Seemed lethargic and unwilling to take players on. He is at his best running at players with pace, buty then the problem arises that he only ever manages to get 1 in 10 crosses even close to being in the right space!

I think Leo is struggling with the idea that he is no longer the main creator in the team...Ifill seems to have taken a lot of what Leo has been doing and is therefore getting more of the ball- maybe leo hasn't really figured out his new position in the tam - as a support player to feed ifill..

yeh i'm not sure about it Stoppy,

if it was lia that lost possession , it might have been because (iirc) Timmo gave him a ridiculously under weighted pass - like i say I'm not sure , but at the time i was not pleased with Timmo's particualr contribution in the lead up

Paston 6: Didn't do too much. In the end only one good save but wasn't tested enough.
Troy 7.5 The man isn't a RB yet it looked like he has always been one. Great going forward, he was like a knife in the Mel defence. Also, ran his arse off for someone who hasn't seen a full 90' for a while
Dura 6.5 Think he did well, though he had that one shocker when he almost score an own goal
Siggy 6 Did well. In the dying stages of the match he seemed to have no stamina left. Point in case, long ball from the back and he was on the wrong side of Archie and he almost scored. Give him a breather for McKain at some stage?
Lochie 7 Finally we saw the Lochie from V.1. Still, had a couple of breaks and failed to square the ball for an easy goal. Pity.
Leo 6.5 The lad is picking it up again. Ran heaps and often went one on one. But can someone from Olympic tell him in Greek to PLEASE HAVE a DIG once in a while!!! :D
Timmo 7.5 He the man
Lia 6 A decent performance. Passed the ball around well but still giving away cheap fouls.
Daniel 6 Played better than last week but perhaps was feeling a bit too much his 50th game.
Caceras 6 The man has quality..if only he could provide an assist or score a goal he'd get a higher mark every game!
Ifill 6.5 He hasn't played as well as usual because basically everyone stepped it up yesterday. He's the only one who takes shots, so credit for that. Also, gret skills and vision.
Costa 5.5 Not his best game, without a doubt. He was a bit unlucky too, having slipped once or twice.
McKain: no vote. Looked good when he came on. I wonder if he's going to be utilised to give one of the CB's or CM's a bit of a breather? Also, is he going to re-sign?!?!?

True enough.

It's fair enough that he gets a lot of our assists, but some of the final passes and shots from him are simply woeful.

If he could even deliver 50% of his crosses well we'd score a few more!

nzpower your ratings are pretty accurate i think.
i would perhaps take .5 off brown and give .5 to lia.

brown got a goal which earns him a 7, but otherwise he wasn't that flash.
lia's distribution (long crossfield passes in particular) was quite good.

I think Bertos looked very lazy at times. Especially toward the end (where to be fair a lot of our midfield did,but him in particular).

There was one moment where Bertos was in the central defense position with the ball, and instead of running it up the wing himself,he passes it off to Hearfield who was literally right next to him, then just stood there idle as Hearfield ran right the way up the field with it (as Bertos shouldve done himself). Wasnt very impressed.
