Woh, so solid all round...
Paston 8 Did the job when he had to, commanded his space well
Siggy 8 Strong in defence
Dodd 9 Solid and what a header
Durante 8 Led the team and defence
Lochhy 8 Might not have got forward but was part of a fantastic defensive team
Leilei 6 Won some useful free kicks
McKain 8 Did very well
Brown 8 He and McKain held their shape well
Kwassy 6 Doesn't contribute enough, pulled out of a couple of chances to run
Covs 7 certainly gave their defenders a work out
Smeltzy 7.5 Another good game
Ferrante 7 Did a simple job well
Leo 7  Not much time, should have come on for Kwas earlier, but kept them guessing

Refs 9 All three did an excellent job

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

agree except maybe leilei on 7, he gave plenty of spark. Was dissapointed with Lochy hanging back a bit

Paston 8 Good in the air mostly, couple of iffy moments
Siggy 9 Didn't put a foot wrong all game, and what is this interest from other a-league clubs?!
Dodd 9 Great understanding with Durante, one sweeps while the other challenges, nice header.
Durante 9 Above, without the header.
Lochhy 8 Solid, could have improved on his crosses a bit though.
Leilei 6 Decision making is lacking at times, but provides spark.
McKain 7 Settled into a new position with ease. Him or Johnson?
Brown 7 Has excellent vision at times
Kwassy 4 Rubbish.
Covs 7 Challenges for everything.
Smeltzy 7 Good game, unlucky not to score.

Ferrante 6 Didn't do all that much, but wasn't required to.
Leo 6  I don't really rate Leo, but he did OK.

Herbert - 8 - Good move for Mckain in the middle. Had flashbacks of Wigan - Liverpool from this morning when seeing him pull Covs off for Ferrante, but then I was reminded that CCM are no Liverpool.

I would agree with Wolfman's comments.
Don't see why Kwasnik has ever been rated above 5 for any game he's played for the nix, he doesn't seem to have gelled with the team.
Daniel should be playing ahead of him.

Good all round effort.

Some did do better than others, but to support a good team effort Im going to give them all 8's.

Except Kwasnik.

Who?

Kwasnik did have one good game from memory, our first game we played well in (I cant remember who we played again?)

Hey - I said nothing. As I only saw half the game, don't feel entitled to.

Kwasnik only played well in the 2nd half against Sydney. Below average otherwise.

I would prefer to see Bertos or even Daniel in for Kwasnik next week as he was the only one in my books who didn't fire. Other than that I'm stoked we got through with a clean sheet!

It sounds like on the radio that Kwasnik was void of much ball. It was like CCM didn't want to play down Lochy and Kwasnik side of the park and focused on attacking Siggy and Gao more, thinking that it was the weak point of the defence.

With Gao being less defensive as an attacking midfielder and Siggy being new to the troubled RB spot, you can understand that.

So well done Siggy, I think he owns that position for the club now. Really tough for the others to make a claim.

Because I didn't visual see the game I can't rate the players. But with the winning goal and decent play, it would difficult to place the MotM to anyone else besides Dodds.

I think the player ratings are a little high given that the match was uneven, didn't really flow and hugely influenced by the heat which led to mistakes and short tempers which caused the ref to blow the whistle every minute. Still we were good and solid.

Still too much hoofing of the ball, we always looked better when playing the ball on the ground.  I still get a bit fearful at corners and crosses with Paston.

When you start rating people 8 or 9 that's sort of MOM ratings and a 5 nil killing of the opposition. The first half was a bit crap really, Most of the team would get a 7 no one a 9 tbh.

Still even if we are not playing like a Ajax 72, to go there in that heat against a team on paper that's pretty fine is a great result.

Covs = 7 ?
He's suposed to be a striker therefore supposed to score goals.
Guilt edged first half opportunity was fired straight at the keeper at the easiest height to save from. An decent, experienced  striker should have done better.
In tight games at this level it's not good enough.
He's just too clumsy to use an alleged pace he has to worry a decent defender.
He's a 6 out of 10 at best.

Well said. People get excited by a win and over-rate. All good performances in difficult conditions but keep it real. Bring them all down a point or two.

Agree with most of them, think Kwasnik needs to be lower though, all he did was get called for playing offside ont he runs he made and then shut up shop and not run for the ball at all.....got tired of hearing the commentarteam go on about how Kwasnik is often picked up offside. Leo looked relaly good when he came on, I'd expect him to start instead of Kwas in the coming weeks.

..........as if it's some comparison to Coveney etc. It's not. Heskey is a good player and what he lacks in hitting the net (at international level) he makes up for with skill, intelligent interplay and his ability to make space for any number of other players to score.

Agree with you on this,we tend to be a little generous in our player ratings. To often our  guys do something good then next time they give the ball away. This happened a number of times yesterday and at times put us under unnecessary pressure.

I thought Coveney did a good job in the first half, worked really hard for the team and when competing for the high balls was often drawing three of their defenders. The shoulder challenge he made on Jedinak was a classic.

Faded a bit in second and good call by RH to drag him.

Good gutsy effort across the park...everyone did their bit.

Thought Coveny was OK....just! Had a good shot on goal finally and crossed very well for Tim Brown to head on goal. Still I think he is only there for his experiance. He will be playing next week though. Only other change would be Leo for Kwasnik. Super Leo was fizzing when he came on....did more in 15 mins that Kwasnik did all game.

Tough game, great win.....well done boys!!!!!

Agree with Fortean Times above^^^^^^^
and with those that have already agreed with him!

Siggy was our best player IMO, but more fo 7.5/10 performance.

Most of the boys were solid, especially the defence. Lochy still looks sluggish and disinterested though.

Lei Lei was disapointing - he had one good run and then passed it back to their keeper. Other times he looked bereft of ideas when attacking a defender and seemed keener to try and win a free kick.

Kwassy again offered little.

Smeltz and Covs worked hard with limited service coming their way. Covs should have taken his chance to score cos he doesn't get many!

Even though this post is generally negative, i'm still chuffed we finally beat CCM!! A crucial 3 points - well done fellas!

Apart from giving untried Draper a go, I do not see any other options. I was just making the point you don't need to score to be a good striker.

Im voting Karl Dodd for striker, giving his letal finishing.

Or Leo Bertos, the amount of goals he's scored in this league is amazing.

sigmund was my pick, for effectiveness. thought the front 3 (smeltz, covs, and gao) were doing too much with the ball, esp first half, and kept coughing it up unnecessarily.  effective back four that linked well with a reasonably cohesive midfield. hats off to the back four and that includes paston. he commanded his area exceptionally well. good to see he doesn't sit on his line.

In defence of the high marks...
a) I thought we dominated the game and looked most likely to win
b) we were playing in their oppressive conditions
c) The high marks went to the defence, and defenders seldom get noticed when they do their job superbly, which I think they did
d) The Mariners have some very good players, who were made to look nothing against us
e) for once we played as a unit, so the marks needed to be consistent

By "doing too much with the ball" we actually looked far more dangerous on attack than in any game so far. I want to see our attacking mids taking more risks, more shots, etc, not a return to that dull, plodding "whack in a cross and hope Smeltz gets on the end of it" football.
