Hmm Hmm Well I'll try and be objective about it.....
Reddy 7 Hung out to dry by the formation in front of him, but did pull off some decent saves
Siggy 5 I thought he did pretty well considering
McKain 3 Got taken apart
Dura 5 a couple of good blocks, pretty hard to organise a non existent defence
Troy 5 Good first half, but little confidence later
Timmo 6 very unlucky, could have had two goals
Diego 4 Some nice passes but too slow on the ball and too floaty in the cross
Ifill 5 Good first half, but Melbourne had him covered
Manny 4 A couple of good tackles, but not a left half
Greenie 3.5 Not in the game
Dadi 4 Not in the game, but at least touched the ball a few times
Leo 4 One great cross, should have been on all game, gave the ball away for a goal
Caceres 6 Took them on
Costa 2 Didn't touch the ball

Melbourne did play very well too.
What do you think??

Ricki may not have been at his best but the lack of spine and gicing away the ball isn't something he can control.

It was more for the formation he used.

Yeh Ricki was taking a gamble with his formation, taking Siggy off was taking it a bit far, but HN is right, poor ball retention was bad. However, surely Ricky needed to play at least one of Leo & Caceres if he's got a target man.
If the boys win in Chch, all is forgiven!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing- prematch I agree with his thinking in that we had nothing to lose in supposed all out attack and the formation used. Didn't really take into consideration just how good Melb were I guess.

I agree Bigtobz.

I thought it was a bold and brave move but one that had a bit of logic. Nothing to lose, we dominated Melbourne at home and it was always going to be tough result to pinch away. I didn't expect a 4 goal drubbing (1 offside) and didn't expect to see Diego start or Leo on the bench either. The players really didn't play well and with 2.5 strikers up front, its not like we didn't have the targets. Just relied on Diego to give it to them and didn't retain the bal in the middlel. I thought Brown was lucky to stay on especially when he had a yellow and leaps in swinging on the play where McKain got his yellow, right after he had just gotten his.

Either way, Melbourne have been a class outfit for a long time under Merrick. Its certainly a statement game smashing us (and to be fair we are a good side) by 4. That 4th goal was just sublime and thats a team firing at the moment. I would not think that any sides would underestimate, nor be as confident as we tried to be when facing Melbourne over the rest of the season.

The only danger I fear is that result takes away any confidence going into CHR. I doubt any team would have stopped that today so hopefully we don't overanalyse it. Possession football and the return of Lia and Lochhead please.

Agree mostly, but I saw Costa actually do a couple of nice passes when he came on, I have no reason to mark him down from the default 5.

Lia still out I think. 2 matches for 8 if you've already had 1 for 5?

Diego - 0. Didnt do anything. Terrible set pieces

Not his biggest Fan but I'd up Manny by one, both him and Hearfield struggled in that formation and it was not anywhere near his ideal position . Do they all hate Greenacre? Did anyone actually give him the ball last night?

because the coach controls how well the players play on the day??? he came in with an attacking mindset cos he knew we had to win, risky sure but needed to be done. He would have trained the guys with that shape and hopefully givne the guys their set roles, unfortunately the players on the park didn't pull it off....was it too big an ask - maybe, so sure Ricki may score low but a 0 indicates your blaming it all on him.

just por really, much like the perth game, noone really turned up,

well i thought hearfield was dreadful last night. he was constantly giving ball away, running himself into blind alleys. subs should have been made much earlier. Ifill was good first half but got carried away tried to do everything himself in second.

0 for all players, they were dreadful last night. Nothing to take from the game except dont play that formation again with that playing combination and the fact that Lochead and Vinnie not playing is a big loss to the team.

I think we will be without Brown this weekend as well due to his yellow card (can someone confirm that)?

Hearfield tries to beat players in his own half - badly.

I thought Brown was easily the best for us. Put in some crunching tackles...didn't get sent off. Got into scoring situations well. Had a scorching shot just skim the upright and had another good shot saved.
Diego was recruited as our "Fred" type creative midfield. Well I was not impressed. His dead ball stuff was ordinary. He often walked the ball into touch or into a dead end. Steve Wonder has more vision!!!!!!
Ifill tried stuff and at least got into goal scoring positions. Dadi set up brown with some nice work....Greenacre...was he on the park?
I will never criticise Lochy again. OK...so he does some dumb things occasionally but last night showed what a big loss not having him is.
Leo is not a shadow of the player he was in the first third of the season....not sure whats up there.
Whenever Caceras comes on he makes stuff happen....really unlucky not to get more game time.

Caceras should be playing every week, end of story. He has been playing very well and deserves to start regularly.

The problem with the phoenix is that when the backline has the ball there is no movement from the midfielders..therefore all the backline just lob the ball forward, which most the time leads to giving the ball away..lia and brown need to be that link, and create space for the fullbacks to pass to..

The formation he started with was always going to fail. Melbourne play with a front three so its man on man at the back and with Kruz and Thompson's pace your doomed to fail. He should have stuck with a 442 which has worked for the best part of the season and started one of Bertos or Caceres instead of sigmund.

This game wasn't a must win, Adelaide, and Central Coast are the games we will have to win to make the play offs and atleast one point from Melbourne and Gold Coast.

The differance with us is that we don't have enough players that have a football brain.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid
