Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Well....
Firstly to the YF, 10 for the chanting and shirts off, got a great showing on TV
Paston 6 Steady, held the ball well in those conditions
Manny 5 Struggled to contain winger, too much room
Siggy 7 Strong
Dura 6 A more intelligent display
Lochie 6 Good to see him going forward a bit, covered better too
Bertos 8.5 Our go to man, thank goodness we have him, what a goal, could well spark off several goals this season I reckon.
McKain 6 A good first half
Ferrante 4 Not his best game for sure
Diego 6.5 Nice little touches, intelligent play, but needs to be more assertive yet
Ifill 7.5 Really showed some goal scoring potential out there
Greenacre 6 Worked hard
Lia 6 Did the job really well
Hearfield?
Daniel?

What do you think?

by and large I would go with this, however ferrante is gonna need to up is game and mckain needs to work on his passing.....Lia could do a good job in the midfield slot

and ferante a 5 for me

very impressed by the potential Ifil, Greenacre & diego have to get us playing football
and Leo - impressive

Think ferrante didn't do too bad except for the obvious screw up at the start.
Manny did struggle a lot.  Think Daniel was pretty ave but Hearfield  looked on to it once he was on.

Thought Hearfield played quite well when he came on, took at the defenders and made some penetrating runs.

sorry?? Everything he touched went bad, first touch of the game lead to the goal, and then every time he touched the ball he gave it away...he's gone downhill from late last season and he does not look like finding his best...

agree with most of the other ratings though.

Good work, but wish everyone would get off the "bag Ferrante" bandwagon (other thread) Other than the obvious shocking first 5 minutes he did ok. Middle of the park went better than last week.

Give him a 5.5 for a 'just pass' mark

Having just watched the highlights, all there second half attack were on Muscat's side and he looked really out of place. Constantly skinned by Horworth (sp?) can't say I'd have him in the side next week if we had a suitable replacement.

I personally think that Ferrante should be called a tit and stuck on a bull because it would be of more use than he is on a football paddock.

That said, after the first 5 mins, I thought he added more to the team than Tim Brown did in the same position and I'd be willing (against better judgement and last year) to give him a run again next week. I think with Diego drifting in off the flank (into a more natural central position) him and Ferrante provided the link between the back 4 and the front two a lot easier and more natural than last week. Diego really showed up all over the place and like his work ethic.

IF Ricki wanted to make change for the sake of it, I could see him possibly putting Diego in that role and bringing Hearfield in on the flank or swapping Lia for Ferrante if not Manny.

Grumpy old bastard alert

Yeah I'm wondering how Lia would do starting at RB. Or maybe drop Ferrante and Play Lia and McKain in the middle?

Don't think we should be making any more changes than these type of choices. We wnat this side to gel more.

Maybe in a few weeks time we give someone a run at LB - but kind of gone off the idea of playing Muscat there. Maybe a good spot for Ricki to aim to strengthen next season after we dont re-sign mulligan

Paston - 6 - did little wrong.
Muscat - 5 - got slacker as the game progressed
Lochhead - 7 - played well, pushed forward like in season 1 and showed why he's the number one (albeit only) left-back.
Durante - 6 - reasonably solid, almost looked stupid when he left the ball for Paston.
Sigmund - 7 - tidy play
McKain - 7.5 - played well, didn't shy from tackles, got stuck in and his distribution wasn't bad.
Ferrante - 5.5 - bad first 10 minutes but when he got the ball he went on good runs.
King Leonidas - 8.5 - ran at the defence a lot and that goal, wow.
Hearfield - 5 - did little but had little game time.
Lia - 5 - same as above
Daniel - 5 - same as above
Greenacre - 6.5 - did well, have high hopes for him.
Ifill - 8 - looked dangerous for a good 2/3 of the game.  Scored a nice goal and showed how eager he is by tackling McKain.

I think that's everyone.

Just watched a full replay of the game. Manny wasn't to good. But didn't think Ferante was too bad. (With the obvious exception) Greenacre i would bump up to 6.5. watched him closely. He never stopped Running all game.

Paston - 6 - solid
Muscat - 4 - Got beaten far, far too easily on countless occasions in the 2nd half by player not reknowned for..well.anything. He seems to often be a step behind the attacking player most of the time though he usually recovers well
Lochhead - 6 - Slowly coming back to being the Lochy of Season 1 but still isn't quite there - few wayward passes but finally got a couple of decent crosses in
Durante - 6.5 - Solid for most of the game - much better than last week
Siggy- 6.5 - Ditto
McKain - 7.5 - Played well but faded after 60 mins and Perth started to run a bit riot
Ferrante - 5 - Didn't think he offered enough support to McKain for most of the game and obviously he gifted the goal
Leo- 8.5 - Great game from Leo - he gets better every time he plays. Faded a bit in the 2nd half but i'll forgive him after that goal!!
Hearfield - 5 -
Lia - 6 - Thought he did well when he came on for a very tired McKain
Daniel - 5
Greenacre - 7.5 - Good all game. Already like him a lot. Great attitude - does the gritty stuff.
Ifill - 7.5 - Looked hungry to impress - isn't here for a holiday, that's for sure. Faded in the 2nd half. Good goal.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe I think that Hearfield should be given more than a ?. For a substitute I think he came on and at least attempted to get the play towards goal happening. I would give a 5.5 - 6.5

Paston: 6. The goal wasn't his fault and he was secure on high balls. very lucky that Sterjovski couldn't score in a brother yesterday.
Manny 5.5 Didn't do too bad but was a bit shaky.
Siggy 7 Great game, stepped it up from last week! I am pleased!
Durante 6.5 A good game from him. Lost his man a couple of times but dropped a dozen of great tackles.
Lochie 5.5 Could have done more in my opinion. His crosses weren't great and he made a couple of silly mistakes.
Bertos 8.5 Had a wonderful first half. I couldn't believe how often he switched from right to left, and left to right. He was tearing their defence open every time he touched the ball. What a way to score too!
McKain 6.5 I think he was doing very well, but others disagreed with me. Ran his arse off and his ball distribution wasn't too bad, considering the weather conditions.
Ferrante 5 Started off real bad, and tried to pick it up after he gifted Perth a goal. His passing wasn't sharp. I just think he's not the best midfielder in the squad, period.
Diego 6 Did OK, and showed his skills, but needs to improve and make the difference.
Ifill 7.5 Has some great skills, decent pace and looks 7" tall!! Ran heaps and got a great goal.
Greenacre 7 Ran till his mouth foamed for 93'. He never stopped and was often putting pressure on 3 defenders at once. Wasn't as lucky going forward but man, I adrmire the committment.

Lia welcome back! Looked mean as with that haircut.
Daniel 's got skills, but not enough time.
Same for Hearfield.

What do you think?

Paston 6 Reliable, but positioning terrible at times.

Manny 3 Couldn't mark a white board, absolutely terrible defending and never closed down his man. Might as well have had 10 players and a gaping hole at right back, it was effectively the same.

Siggy 7 The only nix player to actually close down the man with the ball time and time again. Should be captain.

Dura 6 A more intelligent display, but still lacking.

Lochie 6 Not a bad display
Bertos 8.5 Takes on his man, looks a real asset and is learning how to shoot (!)
McKain 6 Some decent tackles
Ferrante 5 Suspect pass to begin with, sometimes you had to re-check if he was on the field or not.
Diego 6.5 Decent player, needs to get stuck in a bit more.
Ifill 7.5 Creative, takes the ball and does something with it.
Greenacre 7 Looks an intelligent striker, hes no smeltz, hes a lot different, but played wel.
Lia 6.5 Looked hungy
Hearfield 6 Made some good runs
Daniel 4 2 or 3 rubbish passes and loses the ball far too easily.

Overall, a successful game, lucky perhaps. There are obvious places we are weak, right back, centre midfield.

That's a very fair summary.

Highlights for me; Leo, Leo, Leo.......Ifill (he's class and is very clearly committed to performing for his new club and supporters) and Greenacre (he'd run for you till he dropped). Leo, Ifill and Greenacre are going to cause plenty of problems for opposition defences this season. Add Diego to the mix if he can lift to his obvious potential.

Lowlights; Ferrante - it's no good being solid for 85 minutes if you have 2 serious lapses in concentration that cost the team dearly. He nearly gave away a second when he dropped the ball at a glory strikers feet inside the box. It's the red zone Michael - clear the ball. Manny - had a very poor game - Perth spotted him as the weak link early and ran nearly every attack down the left wing. I'm less worried about Manny though - he had a shocker first up last season but got his sh*t together in the following games - just neeeds to mark a hell of a lot tighter (e.g. Siggy). DM continues to be our problem area.

Overall fantastic result - plenty of positives - not the least of which is the character to come back from a very early goal down but still work to be done on tightening up the defense.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Bang on, glad that even after that performance there's still plenty of room to grow as Ricki tinkers with the system as Diego and Ifill reach full fitness and Durante cuts out a couple of mistakes.

Paston - 6 Did nothing wrong, but did look to move a little late a couple of occassions.
Manny - 4 He got carved to pieces, but did look to push forward which was good to see.
Lochead - 6 Some silly passing errors but defensively had little to do and pushed forward when possible.
Durante - 7 Did nothing wrong, almost an error with the back pass, but aside from that did very well, won the ball cleanly and passing was much improved.
Siggy - 7.5 Very solid game, he just doesn't get beaten.
McKain - 7.5, won alot of ball for us in midfield and worked hard throughout the game, did his job really well.
Ferrante - 6 Howler of a mistake, but definately a better choice in the middle, generally passed well and works as hard as anyone defensivley.
Bertos - 8.5 Great game, loving him running at players all the time. Vanished for 10 minutes but when he came back, wow, what a goal.
Diego - 7 Quiet in patches but definately creative, some nice touches and short interchanging passes(1 2's)were excellent.
Greeny - 7.5 With him the old mantra we defend from the front is very true, a work horse with a surprisingly good first touch.
Ifil - 8.5, was our best player when he was on the field, ran hard and caused all sorts of trouble and looked really pissed when subbed off, love that attitude!!
Daniel - 5 Needs to improve or he wont make he bench soon.
Lia - 6.5 Looked very solid when he came on and passed well. Nice chopper tackle aswell.
Hearfield - 6 Came on a looked to involve himself. Move from flank to flank and worked hard.

To give Ferrante a bit of a break, who ever passed the ball to him didn't do him any favours.  He had two men bearing down on him as soon as it came to his feet.  Admittedly he picked the wrong option by trying to turn the man - but you got to wonder if there was any call from the rest of the lads.

He made a bad decision by turning in - you get dispossed there, you're asking for trouble. If you turn to the outside, there's more time to cover up if you lose the ball.

Ferrante was set up with a 'hospital pass'.  It was signalled way ahead of the event. Perth scented it and were on to him like a pack of dogs. The individual who passed to him (I can't recall who it was either), should have played the ball forward, over the top and cut out the pressing Perth forwards.

Nevertheless, once threatened he made the wrong decision and turned the wrong way - lack of match practice and in the first 5 minutes - killer combo.  He's a good footballer and will have learned a major lesson to carry into the rest of the season.

When I watch the replay I don't think that Ferrante was aware of Sikora and only aware of the other Perth player, Shroj? So he thought he was turning out of trouble rather than into it. The Perth players did a good job in making sure both options were closed down.

I was just talking in general terms, as I haven't seen the replay. But remember thinking at the time, go wide, don't turn in. Guess a return pass to Lochy/Paston were probably the best options.

I disagree - to me, a 'hospital pass' is when the teammate doesn't give you a fair chance of getting the ball when he should have been in the position to do so.

No way can you call a pass a hospital one if the receiver has the time to control and turn with the ball.

Considering he had plenty of time to size up the situation it was a nothing pass from Durante at best and at worst a stupid one to send to a man in a vulnerable central postion in front of goal with his back to two nearby Perth players.

Having said that, playing at this level Ferrante should be able to deal with such a ball and has to accept the blame (which I'm sure he has), but Durante was certainly part of that fiasco too.

Paston 6 Steady, did all that he was asked to do except the one on one which was fair enough
Manny 5 Struggled - Lia/Mully to start v Roar?
Siggy 7 Strong
Dura 7 Stronger than last week and more settled
Lochie 6 Better than last season or AW form
Bertos 8 Aside from the free kick, which is 1 in a 100, he caused trouble and interchanged positions well with Ifill - one our main threats.
McKain 6 Solid - surprised he was subbed
Ferrante 5.5 Terrible start and was hoping he'd get subbed after 5 min but credit to him he fought hard and though some of his passes didn't come off he never stopped.
Diego 7 Looked quality - wait til he's properly fit - could be a key signing
Ifill 8 Looked dangerous and determined - more of this and goals won't be a problem
Greenacre 6 Worked hard but didn't get a lot of chances.
Lia 6 Looked solid
Hearfield - not enough time on to score him
Daniel 5 just for the dive but really not enough time on to score him

Yeah, there were 5 'Nix players and 5 Perth players in our defensive third. 2 of the Perth players anticipated Durante's pass to Ferrante and were putting pressure on him, only players really open were Muscat and Paston. The easier option for Ferrante would have been to pass to Paston, but it would have had to have been a really good pass to Pastons stronger foot for the clearance. If you look at it like that, the end result would have been the same if Durante hacked it up the field but I think the intent of playing the ball out and keeping possession is good.

Also notice there has been little talk about Sterjovski's dive... bet the FFA ignore that like Culina's last week.  God forbid a Socceroo pin-up boy gets done.
