Seriously? Because on the evidence of today I think you may have a point. The problem is that we really don't seem to have a team of players who can take on even a bunch of semi-pro hard-men and win. Perhaps - unthinkably - we *do* have to dissolve the club and try again, if that's what it takes to clear out the tired old men.

Oh, I forget - Jake Spoonley was FANTASTIC. Singlehandedly (literally so, a couple of times!) kept us in it in the first 20 minutes. If someone poaches Mossy again, sign him up instantly.

It's good that we lost, makes the players hungry against the Roar.

The only team in New Zealand that I wanted to beat. Disappointing.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

last season we made the mistake of looking good in the off season and in the first game. This is clearly an attempt to dampen expectations so that we expect to be last this season.

also someone missed a trick, exactly the kind of game NZF should have televised and promo'd

Just depends how they approach it.  Result doesn't bother me. Injuries do though.

No surprise to see Ak win. Normal pre-season stuff. Phoenix won't give a shite about it. Exercise would've been to find out which of the younger guys can standup to a bit of heat. Sounds like some of them found out they still have a long way to go.

Is this comment for today's game?
Tade alone had 4 clear cut chances and he should score at least twice, On the other hand good saves by the Nix keeper, so credit to Spoonley...
Can't remember that Nix had any chances.

Hate to be the guy that says it but... we did have a lot of talent out.
Carlos, Ifill and Cunningham. 3 imports, all 3 attacking starters. Does change things up a bit.
Plus it's pre-season so #yolo

Just got back. My 10c.

I'm far less worried about this that I should be because AC were pretty good and very up for it. For this reason I can see why Hernandez, Ifill, Kenny didn't play.. too much risk of injury from keen bean AC tacklers.

First 30 mins was dire. AC hit the post in the first minute. The young backs (the ginger and the other tall guy) look OK but undercooked. Ironically we were far better defensively in the 2nd half.

Caira, Boxall were OK, although Boxall did a pointlessly stupid shirt pull. Gulley was very good. Spoonley was very good, nothing he could have done about the goal (edit: especially since he wasn't on). Tyler Boyd: meh. Makes bad decisions, just not mature as a player, although he has the skills. Lia, meh. Durante, Siggy, Muscat, actually pretty good.

We lacked something going forward, Brockie looked frustrated throughout the game. I suppose that's not surprising given who was out. He had the best shot, a long range shot, which says something about the lack of chance creation.

Some pointlessly nasty play. Why be an asshole at a pre-season fixture where you stand a chance of picking up some fans? Why set yourself up as the bad guys and then lose to boot? Silly.

Anyway looking on the bright side, it was a very good hit-out at ACFC impressed me.

Didn't think I'd ever say this but I was gagging for some old-style whip-it-into-the-box-and-hope stuff towards the end. Lots of faffing around behind the box and not enough pulling of triggers.

We had a couple of chances in the second half, due entirely to either Brockie or Tyler Boyd, if I remember once. There was one beautifully floated cross from Brocks that Watson just couldn't get to at the far post.

Oh, I forgot. Reece Caira is clearly Robert Downey Jr. in disguise. And he spent a lot of his time on the field yelling at Leo, although I think Mossy did too. Mainly because Leo tended to get himself stranded upfield rather than tracking back.

This. Lots of players (not just young) were not up to it today but you could tell the phoenix were missing something as well. It was a good training run for Ernie to see what he's dealin with depth wise. ACFC were decent at times on attack but very good defensively - the Nix will be better with the foreign boys back so I'm not too worried that we didn't score. Emi Tade took the piss a bit in the first half but couldn't finish a number of chances - we have Spoons and Siggy to thank for that.

Disagree. He showed confidence, yes, but made dumb decisions. Sounded like Durante agrees with me. Please don't spill beer on me at the Fox next time we meet. But yeah he had a cast.

Was in reference to the comment above it made by Alanford saying that we created very little up front.

Also things changed drastically when Dura and Manny came on. Nix controlled the game for most of the second half but lacked the final punch. Couldn't pinpoint why from my angle but we looked exposed when ACFC counter attacked in the second half which ultimately lead to us conceding. If dura ever gets injured we're in trouble.

Yup. The babies in the back 4 got beaten up by the ACFC hard men. They weren't bad and to be fair this is exactly the sort of game they'll get a lot out of.

Congratulations to ACFC on what was a truly professional performance at a packed Kiwitea. Seriously, the Nix were not up to it. With the brave exception of Siggy, the veterans looked like old men and the young 'uns were brave and bold but were just pushed off the ball by the hard-core Auckland midfield. Of the newbies:

- Gulley really impressed (esp. when marking Krishna in the second half), and Watson and the Ginger fellow were good to a lesser degree. Bertsch was trying hard but he kept giving the ball away. Luke Adams is an ugly customer. Rufer never got anything to do. Stevens was okay, I suppose. Tyler Boyd (playing with a cast) was great in the second half and deserved a goal. He was one of only a few young 'uns to show any confidence.
- Another fellow who had nothing to do all day was Stein. You could tell he was just looking for a nice through ball through the middle. But I can see what people mean by "we have no midfield". We certainly had no attacking midfield today, and that may have been the secret ingredient.
- Krishna is spookily fast. Other standouts for ACFC were 4 and 13 in the midfield (don't know names).

And here is my prize to the Knitting Circle: you won. You bested us. You proved that ACFC are a real coalface club with heart and the Nix are nothing. So, in my shame, I hereby promise to come to every ACFC home game this summer. And stand right next to alireggae and FU BLU. Chanting loudly and drunkenly.

i look forward to buying you a beer ....not too big on the chanting myself ....the drunkenness however ....

Actually, (the fact that the knitting circle are going to make this forum even more unbearable aside) I'm actually happy with that result. It'll put the ASBP in the spotlight for a moment and people may take notice if they see Auckland beating Wellington Phoenix on the news.
It is that wishful thinking?

Allegedly

Was behind the Phoenix goal in the first half, and by god it was a scary, scary place to be. They should have had 5 in the first 30 minutes if it wasnt for some dire finishing and Spoonley. Siggy was diabolical with the Fijian killing him every time for pace. The Nix did look better in the second half but I must say watching Stein live was 5 times worse then live. Brockie has to be ahead of him for game one. Sigmund should also go for Boxall.

Fantastic performance by City. I wasn't too interested in the result obviously as we're just entering the pre season but was pleased with their style and dominance. Should be a good year for us. Cute chant by the choir "Bayern Munchen, we're coming for you"

Cheers Nix, and good luck for this season.

agree mate... but they are too busy charging our youth players $2000.00.......

As a Wellington Phoenix fan that lives outside of Auckland, I would definitely love to see City in the A-League. Only problem is it'd weaken the ASB Premiership considerably. But if a new team were to go in from NZ (very unlikely), I hope it's Auckland City and not a new Auckland franchise.

Bertos played. Not bad, not good. Boxall looked like he was playing RB, and I think Ernie's made comments to the effect that he's quite fast for a CB so could be moved to RB. Siggy has never been known for his pace, he needs fast LB/RBs to complement him.

Stein wasn't great today. Looks like he needs Hernadez, or maybe Ifill. Although he did play really well without Hernandez against NZA

Rufer was good again.
Sherminator was actually pretty good.
Watson wasn't as good as in Rotorua.

Gulley was Ok, probably better than Boxall in RB but hard to tell. Boxall seemed unable to pass it anywhere except up the wing on the ground.
Stevens was rubbish, years away from a-league, if ever.
Boyd still looks a little lost in front of goal.
Lia was possibly the worst player on the pitch.
Bertch didn't help him much.
Brockie looked dangerous for a little while, then stopped putting crosses in or shooting.
Ref was shocking.
