Fans, players or both?

Starting to think the spoon is ours already. Not something I've ever thought about any time I support before. Was Ruds a bad signing for us? Our last two managers had good contacts, not sure that he does based on who we've signed bar Taylor.

Fans. WSW witter suggests nothing great from us.

And than this:

@jtanbaby

Wish I had more news but not a great dealing happening in the Phoenix attacking half

WSW still lead 1-0

To sum it up: Attack is non existent and the back leaks one goal.

Me neither

We are in the worst shape since we started, which should not be possible when you consider how bad we have been for the last few years

If the club sits back and waits for a new Manager to have the all the networks to attract players they deserve what they get.

Our previous Manager may have had contacts but it did him no good because he was a nut job.

Losing to a youth team convincingly (and not even the best youth team). Very grim.

No way to spin this as a positive. Can't see us beating anyone this season.

Yeah there's no other way to look at this. Season starts in just over 4 weeks. We look terrible

If Merrick couldn't turn this team around why would a no-name first year coach ?

I for one am far more excited for the handy this year. Will watch a few Phoenix games but can't imagine this will be a season to remember (for any good reasons)

We're all still here for a reason.

But it looks as if this has all the familiar feelings of us losing 90mins of our lives that we'll never get back every weekend for 27 weeks.

I'm excited for the A league as a whole.  Most other sides have upgraded their rosters and there's some great players coming to the A League, and it's a better product that the handy. But as far as the Nix goes, hard to see them doing anything but battling for the spoon unless they can get a couple of great signings ASAP.

We need a quality box to box midfielder - until we learn to control a game, we are always going to struggle.

It doesn't matter how good our attack is potentially, if they never get the ball.

Nomates Tittle - Wellington smashed by WSW U17

With fans like this on that side of the ditch who needs a new FFA

nomates "We basically had a full strength side and WSW played there youth team, We got creamed all over the park in possession and just basic game play it self. So yes smashed."

I look at last year’s ACFC, TeeDubs and Canterbury and reckon they would go toe to toe with Nix over a Handy season.  Rudan doesn’t have quality cattle across the park or squad depth, so he has to find a  way to extract competitiveness/points from strong team culture. I hope they’re tight.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

Patently obvious that our season will succeed or fail based on recruitment between now and the start of the season.  Our current squad is bottom two for sure so we probably need 3-4 players who can start.

Rudan is not concerned about the current status of recruiting...not concerned this week, blaming lazy Kiwi's last week. I also find no reports that any of our pre-season game was exciting, want to win, winning mentality football.

It will be a reality check in Round 1 for everyone involved. First impressions, live tv coverage, scheduled match reports and press opinions. Microscopes will be out.

Rudan has been talking underdog mentality from day one which is a mindset rather than an actual skillset, I just can't see us actually competing toe-to-toe with the level of players the league now has.

Naivety.

I mean, we've made the playoffs once in the past 6 seasons when we had Burns at his absolute best.  We've had better squads than this against an overall league that was weaker in quality not make the playoffs. It's not really hard to see why people would be writing us off unless we can pull a couple of rabbits out of a hat is it?

Yeah things look grim no doubt. But there's no way anyone can predict the outcome. I'll get slowly more and more depressed as we slip down the ladder like every other year rather than go there now.

I am comfortable with our current position. So far we are yet to lose a game in the League this season!

Need to recruit a decent attacking midfielder or striker from overseas.

Surely the Nix can find someone of the required quality from a smaller league in Europe or Britain?

Doesn't have to be a name player like Essien or Martins - often those sorts of guys are well over-the-hill anyway and injury-prone.

Oh, there you go - Rudes is onto it:

Rudan is unlikely to sit on his hands and just do nothing ("because it is Phoenix, it is too hard"). This expectation that things will stay as they are is just part of our own tragic masochistic mental wank, where we simply do not expect things to work out for The Nix, ever.

However, it would be very unlike Rudan, an impeccable tough player in his day, to take it easy and then "run away to a safe job across the ditch" with his FOX mates giving him a hospital pass.  I might agree - in the fullness of time - with others that might brand him an inexperienced tactician or whatever.  However, I would expect him to have the same resilience as a coach that he had as a player, and therefore to have a good influence on team mentality.  And even if he can get decent recruitment done, it will still take time for the team to gel; as I said before. The more influential or talented any new recruit will be, the longer it will take.  So I do not expect us to just start winning all league games from day one, inasmuch as I would like us to.  This is an almost complete rebuild of a team, and I expect the evolution to continue through the first few months of the season.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

As only other pre-season games are behind closed doors - her is Football Today season preview (Opinion Piece)

Part 1

Part 2

Wellington Phoenix

If there is one A-League team more desperate for a change in fortune that the Phoenix, I’m not sure which one it is. Something has to give under new manager Mark Rudan and the rookie takes the reins on the North Island across the ditch with an ambitious desire to transform the struggling club.

There is plenty to suggest an upswing. Englishman Steven Taylor, Polish duo Filip Kurto in goal and midfielder Michal Kopczynski all arrive with promising pedigree. With stalwart Roy Krishna, Nathan Burns and the exciting Sarpreet Singh up front, the Phoenix will continue to trouble teams if they can remain solid at the back.

It looms as a season of rebirth for Wellington and things may take some time to improve. Hopefully the fans remain patient, as Rudan undertakes one of the most challenging tasks in the A-League right now. If he is able to achieve it, the entire competition will benefit.

Full Squad

  • Andrew Durante, Liberato Cacace, Dylan Fox, Nathan Burns, Roy Krishna, Oliver Sail, Thomas Doyle, Louis Fenton, Ryan Lowry, Sarpreet Singh, Steven Taylor, Filip Kurto, Mitch Nichols, David Williams, Michał Kopczyński, Alex Rufer

So, it's just been the fans watching them that hold the Nix back?

Obviously we should have a "Play like no one is watching" chant!

So nice to see Fenton on the score sheet. Anyone with his injury record, and 'Ferenc Puskas' for middle names deserves to succeed.

Would like to know if Mandi played, how, and if he made a difference.

I've been bemused at all the angst and worrying on this forum. You Kiwis would definitely win a World Cup for worrying/angst/anxiety if there was one. I mean look at the AB's, they drop one game against a fired-up Springboks, who played out of their skins, and suddenly the World Cup is in jeopardy and Steve Hansen's neck is on the chopping block. To quote one Mick Malthouse (who coached my other favourite team - the West Coast Eagles) 'the earth is slow but the ox is patient'. Change is incremental. I'm going to give Rudes and our lads the benefit of the doubt. We've got a developing squad and I'd rather we drop a few pre-season games and come good as the season progresses.Having a few spare spots on the roster is also not a bad thing as it gives us the option of adding additional players as/if required later in the season, especially if we have injuries. In short, all is not lost. Get your season ticket, get to the games and let's support Rudes and the Nix. it's great having an A-League team in this town and I hope we can turn things around this year.

I'm not 100% Kiwi and exactly this comment is more typical Kiwi than most of the other 'negative' comments. Relax and hope that is not how you win games. You have constantly improve a teams and  a club and many of us are worried that is not happening. Another bad season and I will be very angst free because I don't care anymore.
