ok after our game against CCM on 19th Jan, what happens next for the phoenix, ok they will probably get a couple of months of deserved rest and a break but will there be  pre-season games at the westpac as obviously there is gonna be a period of 7-8 months without a home game and some of the people who rarely go to a match might be distenterested by then after we have geared up the nix and got people to come along, you will obviously get your regular fans like myself and you guys on here

Well, I'm a season ticket holder at the Warriors, so that'll sort the months in between the footie seasons out.

Looking forward to the new 'Nix season already. Would be nice to see them play a few pre-season games round the country. They are a Wellington team though, so I'm not sure they'd venture up here to show the JAFAS what a professional fitba' team looks like!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

There will be a pre-season cup competition starting in Mid-July between the A-League sides. ! game a week for 6 weeks, some of which will be home (last year one was in Christchuch, the others at the stadium).

Prior to that expect some local matches, but they are unlikely to be at the stadium.

I saw the Kingz play there twice... once against Marconi and once against a Central selection.  Almost killed myself driving back to Hamilton after one of them.

It was a Pre-Season game... they played them in an NSL league game here as well.

Played Northern Spirit in a couple of Pre-Season games in Wellington too.

I remember one of those games out at Porirua Park.  It was one of Patricio Almendra's first games and he was diving around like Greg Louganis.  Good to see him starting as he meant to go on.

i think we should play each other 4 times in the league, 2 at home, 2 away against the same team, that would increase the season by another 7 games and it make it more interesting and longer too.
Permalink Permalink

Are they adding another couple of teams? That would increase it to 27 games in the regular season (assuming they all still play 3 times) and add more variety.

hmmm wellyT your the 2nd person ive heard say that, i thought they were adding them in the 2010/11 season, but you and someone else reckon its this season, seriously that would be awesome, but i think if thats the case then we have to get 1 more NZ team in it , more likely be Auckland, can you imagine in the A-league - welly v auckland, imagine the crowds, the buzz!!! would be awesome!

It's not that hard to figure out. The Lions played there at the same time this season.

Not that anyone watches the lions, but still...

The most likely sides are North Queensland and the Gold Coast, followed by Canberra and Wollongong.  Other places have been mooted (Geelong, Tasmania, Darwin) but these seem to be the only places with people actively looking to form and fund a side.  There is also a 5 season exclusive licence in Melbourne and Sydney so Souths Pirates and West Sydney would be very unlikely.

Still, no Souths, no A-League.

Another NZ side would need a Terry equivalent to step in and that is highly unlikely based on how close the whole concept came to dying only 10 months ago.  Another NZ side is Highly unlikely.

hard news, thanks for the info btw, but the new teams is it gonna be next season or as i read on 4-4-2 that its gonna be 2010/11 season?

Could be as soon as next season.

Nothing confirmed from the FFA, but both Queensland consortiums are very vocal that they can go this coming season, and I suspect they want the Gold Coast one to beat any expansion of Aussie Rules in there.

Some big decisions to be made in coming months about the whole shape of the league with the youth league and possible expansion, plus the implications on salary caps and squad sizes.  All complicated by us not having a side in the youth league (possibly).

Imagine Jardel, Laybutt, Renaud and our Mr Elrich all hitting the trough at the same time. That would make a huge dent in somebody's bank account.

Team Wellington Miramar West Sub plenty to watch but that might be seen as supporting
the local game though!!

Sadly, most local clubs in Wellington don't tend to play on Friday and Saturday nights. Nice try tho'.

I strongly suspect that a large number of YF members are actively involved in local football, but don't let that stop you getting another wee dig in, eh Ted.

Dear happy Ted.

I like others have been to see Team Wellington play - more than once. No doubt we will be going to other matches too.

However, I do get your point, and it'd be great to see a few more go along to support Wellington.

Having said that, I'm sure the other teams in the NZ league would like to see a few more turn up -  including Auckland teams no doubt.

You may be a bit peeved at the phoenix, and don't support them, but ANYTHING that lifts the profile of the game overall has to be good for all.

Cheers

I agree that anything that raises the profile of the game is good
the LA Galaxy game was a prime example of that and was fantastic
and the Phoenix do raise the profile of the game but at what cost?
they will still finish in bottom 2 so the may raise the profile but not the credibility or the standard
the NZFC is in a state at the moment as yesterdays result at Manawatu shows it is the long term affect of an A-League team in NZ that concerns me
