*WELLINGTON PHOENIX UPDATE*

A-League football alternatives being explored for Rotorua

Rotorua District Council's events unit, Rotorua Events and Venues, is examining alternative match arrangements following advice from A-League football champions Central Coast Mariners that they are no longer able to make the previously planned pre-season match against Wellington Phoenix.

The match was scheduled to take place in Rotorua on Sunday 22 September. The Mariners have cited a clash of pre-season fixtures as the reason behind their decision.

Events & Venues' operations manager Crispian Stewart said his management team was in discussions with a number of other A-League cubs and the Wellington Phoenix to try and secure a replacement opponent, as well as exploring the possibility of a date change.

"We remain committed to finding an alternative if at all possible so that Rotorua still gets the opportunity to host its first pre-season A-League fixture. We anticipate being able to confirm some final arrangements as soon as next week"

Mr Stewart said ticket sales were currently on hold temporarily until an alternative match could be confirmed. Existing ticket holders would have the option of redeeming tickets for the alternative event or getting a full refund.

Please call 0800 111 999 or email customer.help@ticketmaster.co.nz with any enquiries.

Crispian?!

"Ticketmaster are pleased to announce that Crispian has spoken to his boi Aslan and the two of them have arranged a replacement fixture with Narnia FC.

"'We are delighted,' said Aslan, 'you're my boy Crispian'.

"Ticketmaster are expected to recommence ticket sales shortly, and a travel package for magical creatures from far away lands is also expected to be announced."

The phrasing of that release is priceless:

"Rotorua District Council's events unit, Rotorua Events and Venues, is examining alternative match arrangements following advice from A-League football champions Central Coast Mariners that they are no longer able to make the previously planned pre-season match against Wellington Phoenix."

CCM are "no longer able to make it" - they're not coming round for a Sunday bbq!!! But, but, we had it in the diary for 3 weeks now??

Adelaide are in the same tournament in Indonesia and have a game scheduled for the same date (22/9) against WSW. I've been asking around on twitter to see if that game will still go ahead. Maybe the tournaments dates were altered from the original plans?

We already have an away game against WSW scheduled on 21/8. Wanderers are meant to be playing Adelaide in Penrith, so probably have booked the stadium for it.

Very cool concept.

Nix were probably too scared to ask Auckland City for a game

Not a whisper. For those who had brought tickets, are you more excited or gutted by this match?

Quite interested in seeing all the new young fellas have a run
it's fine for me, was passing by anyway and $15 is peanuts for a bit of a look at NZA and NixB
should be a fun day

This will be interesting if you are named Aaron Clapham.

On one hand you want the new gaffer to sign you but on the other, the guy picking the other side doesn't think you are good enough.

Normall I don't like these sort of games but this one could be quite interesting. They should sell it as the New Nix vs the Old Nix.....because thats what it looks like it will be. There should be a few players who will have points to prove. Maybe a coach as well

As for the outcome?  I think the NZ A side would be more embarrassed to lose. Could be a very very interesting match with quite a few individual battles.

For Ernie it is a great chance to do a dummy run without his AW's.....a rehearsal for the seasons opener! I guess the Nix would look something like

                  Italiano

Fenton   Boxhall   Adams   Caira

          Muscat   Lia/import

               Carlos

Ifill         Stein       Rufer/Boyd

. It would be nice to see as many all whites as possible playing for the crowd. With the exception of Reid, Smith and Wood, we could almost put out our entire starting line up for our first WC qualifying game.

It the strongest side is put out I would actually prefer to watch this one then the CCM

Gutted I can't lock this one in until I know the outcome of my golf Club Championships Matchplay Semi Final on 31st August. 36 Hole Final is set down for the 21st Sept should I be lucky enough to win through I may be very hung over...

I think this is a really interesting fixture - much better than a pre-season friendly against CCM.

And it's a promoters dream if you do it right - you can pitch this as a game where just about every player has a point to prove

You know OOE, I suspect a few games into the season, people will be wishing Lochhead was playing.

Exactly but you can't tell those that need a scapegoat for failure. Tim Brown was the same. What we would have given for him last year

I know its remote but with NZ Football involved in the game now, does the chance that Sky may show the game live increase? I can't find room in the budget to get to the game but would love to see the game. It would probably mean a lower crowd tho.

Yeh, it's the planned weakness in a salary capped squad
score more goals than the other guys is the philosophy
I think we all know that with Lochie there we'd not have all of Kenny, Carlos and new DM.  If Lochie had accepted a lower salary we might have had them all
which doesn't alter the fact that Lochie may well be the best LB on the field
I'll just be optimistic and hope the young guys develop well and quickly.

The overriding opinion is that Lochhead was on a wedge and perhaps he did not like the new terms offered but no one has actually come out and said that this was the case.

I guess from two fronts, minimum football wage is better than no wage and experienced LB is better than no LB. Even if he does not fit the style Ernie wants, surely they must come together for a chat.

Don't want to start anything as it is the wrong thread, but as one of the bigger criticisers of Brown (at times), I still maintain our midfield was just as bad with him in it and I stand by my criticisms. He did however start to get into the form of his life as his time at the nix ran out - I was eating my words then.

a Micky Mouse REPLACEMENT......could not get any other team to play against.......will be such a " total " very friendly match...eg, is Durante going to tackle Ifill at 100%...not likely.

Given the lack of options due to CCM pulling out late, I'd say its a really good and quite clever replacement.

Not so sure about that.....there will be plenty of motivation by many players to prove they should be picked or should not have been dropped. You think Locky might want a big game?
Remember that if we qualify for the WC then there are slots in the squad to go to Brazil next year still up for grabs. Thats plenty of motivation for the likes of Boxhall, Adams, Fenton etc. There are plenty of  young kids coming through who want to show both Ricki and Ernie that they are as good as or better than some of the old guys.
I think there is a fair bit of spice to this game.....more than there would have been against CCM
