Lochhead wasn't even offered a contract.  Not even a reduced-salary one.

From the horses mouth.

Doesn't surprise me.  From all the comments from Ernie it just seemed he didn't fit into his plans.  From the options we currently have, I think we are very much going to regret that decision.

Too old, too slow..... at some point someone has to rebuild this team. At the end of last season we had a stack of players over 30. You have to start getting younger replacements in at some stage. 100% support Ernies recruitment policy.

I don't think he is too old, or that slow. His passing was poor as was his defending, but I just don't think he was good enough.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

But he's still the best left back in the country. Surely worth a reduced contract at least.

"Best left back in the country" is entirely relative. I'm the best goalkeeper among thirty-something Wellington-born Auckland women whose name begins with D. It may well be that Reece whatsisface is better than Lochy, and if so, why should Lochy be kept if he's more expensive?

Reece is still inexperienced with less than a handful of matches at senior level (only 27min of HAL) football. It could be a bit risky not having someone else to play in that position taking into account form/injuries (trialists pending) and even if Lochy is not highly regarded by Ernie he does offer experience and at least average HAL performance which could have warranted some sort of offer.

That comparison doesn't really work at all, but whatever, we'll go with it. I think it's obvious that Caira hasn't set the world alight during pre-season and I assume he won't magically turn into a much better player when the real thing starts. I think it's a safe assumption that quality wise - Lochhead was/is still the best option if that's all we were looking for. Of course, Ernie has his reasons (assume it's because he's a bit quicker and it's easier to mould him into what Ernie wants out of a full-back), but I don't necessarily agree with them.

Being quicker means stuff all if you're not a good footballer. Defenders aren't allowed to make mistakes.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Adelaide has pulled out of the Indonesia tournament after it was postponed, CCM will probably do the same. Shambles.

Question I'm keen to know the answer to as well, I'm heading along for Stuff.co.nz and wondering whether a live blog would generate any interest

welcome mate, are you based in wellington for the season?

I'm not, I'm up in the Bay of Plenty. But I'm already planning on the Napier game and one or or two others. A 7 hour drive isn't to bad for me being from the states, just like catching an away game in Salt Lake or Kansas City.  Is there going to be a tailgate at the game or a pub before hand? Would be cool to meet some people.
