Hi there,
I am a support person for people with disabilities. We went to buy tickets for the Boca game and according to Ticketek support staff persons don't have to pay if they're going to the Rugby or Cricket, but they do at Phoenix games.
Does anyone know what the official policy is? I am talking about people with physical AND psycological disabilites, who need support staff in order to go to the game.
In most cases we never get charged (as caregivers). Of course our clients do, but we don't as most business realize that we're there to support do what they want.

Surely, this policy could be changed?

never been in this situation at the stadium but worked with kids with dissabilities and when we took them places we still had to pay a reduced entry fee to most places - ie swimming pools, museums etc client covered the cost mostly.....

Sounds like a story for the media. If you have no luck contact the Dom Post or Wellingtonian. Often all it takes is a call from the media.

apparently one of my colleagues even wrote to Parliament and nothing came of it. I am just a bit sad that, if what the Ticketek lady said is true and support people don't have to pay at cricket/rugby then it's not a Westpac issue but a Phoenix one (or a ticketek one?).
I think people should recognize that without us they can't attend games or do any activity. For example when we go to the Aquatic Centre they get charged for swimming but we don't. In my view it should be exactly the same. I will look into it. It really depends who you talk to. Some people are very nice and will go out of their way to help 'us' out, others won't.

Sounds pretty stink.

TBF Smithy's had to pay for his ticket even though he is the offical carer of Greenie.

nope I didn't yet. but I will. unfortunately you have to buy tickets through ticketek and not the Nix, but I am sure they will be happy to help.

You can buy tickets though through the Phoenix store in Hunter Street.

Err.. somehow I dont think going to the media would be a good idea. I can see Campbell Live now... having a go at football, the phoenix and Terry.

Don't worry, I would never do it to the Nix. I will however get in touch with someone at the club. Giving support persons free tickets is the right thing to do and will make the whole Nix experience more open to people with disabilities, and will raise even more the profile of our amazing football club. We took our residents to another game last year. It was the 6-0 thumping of GCU! So let's hope they bring us a bit of luck again!

The whole reason why I raised the issue is that we would like our residents to attend more and more games as they really enjoy the atmosphere and experience. So will talk to someone and hopefully they'll be able to make it to more games.

Thanks for looking into this.  I have a disabled son and it would be handy to know what the arrangements are for taking him.  The one time he's come to a match he coped pretty well except for throwing a plastic toy near the end (sorry to that lady) and it was the first NQ Fury match where they scored with almost the last kick of the game.  But I don't blame the boy for that.

What else could he have done?

I'm a wheelchair user and have not had any offer of 'care giver' discount at the NIX. I know I used to with the ODI cricket matches...

Ive got a mate whos in a chair who i went along with once and it was a nightmare getting in. They wouldnt let him through the usual entry or even let him buy a ticket from the usual booths, he had to roll over to some side window of one of the booths and wait 10mins for the ticket to be 'arranged' and for the chair access to be unlocked.

hmm good to know AJ. I'll make sure I turn up with plenty of time to make sure we don't miss kick-off!
To everyone else, thanks for your opinion/feedback. I agree with who said that the Nix have probably just 'overlooked' the matter. The truth is that the number of people with disabilities is far lower than those without. However, it is not an excuse to not look into some kind of 'arrangement' in order to allow everyone to experience the Nix! I will get in touch with the club soon and see if we can sort anything out! in the mean time we're going tomorrow and I'm sure my guys and girls will have a blast! watch out RoF!

I would never say go to the television media - print all the way! Community paper's wouldn't sensationalise the issue like natioal media. Going to the media is always the last resort anyway, definitely talk to the club. It's most likely an oversight.

Best of luck, nzpower.
