From the age.com.au
"although it would be interesting to know whether either coach, Victory's Ernie Merrick and Wellington's Rikki Herbert, would give up a pre-season trophy in exchange for three competition points when the two clubs clash at the same venue in round two of the regular season."
What would you prefer if you had the choice? 3pts in league against MV or the PSC?
I would take the cup then have an open top bus parade from Stadium, up Lampton etc finishing at Parliment (BB) this saturday!

3pts for me would be great to win the PSC.But would be pissed off if we missed out on the finals by 3 points.

when it comes down to it though, a trophy would mean so much to the club, and the confidence should get us going for the season much, much more than losing our first ever final.
You know we belong together...

But if you could only have the PSC OR 3pts in league tigers - which one would you take?

i think thats a fair point. While in reality the 3 points is more important the confidence and exposure that would come from winning a trophy will be worth a lot more than three points

oh silly me
with some seriousness depends which 3 points - i'd trade 3 points away against the top team in november (if we've won the preceeding two games)
and that's my final (har har) offer
(agreed the exposure from winning tomorrow will/should be great!)

That sounds good in theory, but I doubt a PSC win would have that much impact. I mean, the final itself has had bugger all coverage so far in most of the media, the players themselves are professionals who know that the quest for the big prize starts after Wednesday.
I mean I know they'd love to win and come into the season with confidence, but if I was a Nixplayer, I think I'd feel worse dropping points at home early on in the season where the target has been set for the top 4, than if I lost in the final of a competition that is, at its heart, just there to get all the teams up to speed before the regular season starts.
Having said all that, can't wait for tomorrow's game. Should be awesome.

i was just thinking about this on the way home from work! um, probably the 3 points...but only just

a bar tab (great though it is Matt) wouldn't make me feel better if we missed the top four by 2 points!

Um well luckily its a decision I don't have to make...

at this stage of the (pre) season i'll take the cup.
of course later in the season............

Im not a complete idiot, some parts are missing!

I think its possible that winning tomorrow night could be big enough for the public to get even harder behind the club and make the chances of picking up 3 points every home game a greater possibility.

Take the cup, then get lots of three pointers against everyone else so dropping one game to MV won't matter.

I'd take the three A-League points without a doubt. Actually if they changed the name of the PSC to the A-League Cup or something then I'd probably take the trophy. But the word 'pre-season' makes me think it's not AS important.

Trophy = higher media profile = bigger crowds = more media.....
great for the club and the sport when it happens

Normally I'd say the 3 points. However, knowing how NZ supporters tend to operate, and due to the relative infancy of the club right now I'd say the cup. A 'tournament' win would do wonders for the public image of the club, albeit a pre-season tournament.

I'd take the trophy, I'd love a win right now and we would have something to celebrate for ages
We will win a lot, and lose a few, through the season, but I doubt that we will be able to pinpoint any particular game if we missed the top four playoffs by 1 or 2 points.
Almost every game has moments where if a player had been just a bit quicker or more accurate, a goal would have been scored
Lets get this trophy first and worry about the rest later!

3pts, anyday. It is the 'Preseason' cup after all.
But of course theres no reason why we can't have both

def the cup! a boost right now to membership numbers, public interest, kudos for sponsors etc due to securing some silverware far outweighs the three points.

Nutshell.
I'll still be much more nervous about each of those 3pt league games though.

3 pts by a mile. No one remembers pre season a few games into the real thing.

I'd take the trophy,an empty cabinet looks much better with trophies in it, no matter what their for winning.

If it was a normal preparation game, you would say three points. But this is the Pre-Season Cup Final (good point above, just call it the Cup) that is now live on Sky. That's unprecedented for a pre-season cup game - and I expect this match means more to us than it does to Melbourne.
We've had some decent news coverage in the build-up. If we win tonight, I would expect some good positive news coverage as a result. Paul Henry, in particular, can grovel at our feet. Being just one year old in a country that has traditionally tried to ignore football, the kind of publicity a trophy could bring is gold dust. Give me the win tonight and I'd agree to sacrifice three points to Melbourne in the regular season.

If the damn thing wasn't called the 'Pre-Season Cup' people would take it more seriously. But I still think winning this will be a bigger boost for the club, especially as it's now live on SKY where Joe Bloggs can see the Nix winning something. And if it's live on TV it must be important!

I defiantely want us to win tonight and take the trophy, for th Nix it will mean alot of things, including a big "we mean business" to the rest of the teams....if it was at the expece of 3 points then I'd still rather have the trophy as long ast that 3 points didn't stop us getting into the top four!

Tough one, but I'd have to say the cup.
Purely based on the amount of good vibes it will create both within the team, the supporters and the genral public when we win it.
That, plus it's a great way to boost confidence in the team prior to the season kicking off, even if it is a bit token...
COME ON PHOENIX!

If losing just one game in the season will net us the pre-season cup then hell yeh I choose the cup. We'll win every other game anyway so what's 3 points to an otherwise unbeatable team :p
Permalink

Win the cup - gain the extra prestige in the eyes of the general punter, resulting in bigger crowds at the games, meaning more home support, meaning the 3 points will follow.
