Purpose-Built Football Stadium

I read an interesting article which discussed the advantages of smaller stadiums for the A-League.

A lesson can be learnt from the WSW who play at Parramatta Stadium, where a 10000 crowd produces a

far better atmosphere than 12000 at Suncorp for example.

"Yes, crowds have to grow in the A-League. And they have been. But what has been behind the growth?

We are slowly appreciating that the unique atmosphere at football games is a trump card in the battle for hearts and minds.

To best leverage this opportunity we should be downsizing where appropriate and possible."

The cake tin is too big and in the long run a smaller purpose built football stadium for the Phoenix has to be considered if

football in this country is to grow and gain more reputation/respect.

Welcome your thoughts and ideas :)

I'd like a little indoor one. Like basketball.

I like tautologies because I like them.

We need a time machine. The cake tin should have been built as a two tier 35000 seat rugby/football stadium where the top tier only used for all blacks and other events.

The reality is a 15k stadium won't be built in wellington and cricket at the caketin is a total fsilure to attract crowds - basin would be fine.

Stadium porn. Love this set up. Turn Newtown into this...start with the 8,000 seater though

Every quake I hoped they would find structural issues.

Newtown is a traffic nightmare so the wrong location.  Needs a 35k, two tiered rectangle where the stadium is with just the lower tier open for games that need < 15k.

Thanx for the post!

Beautiful development plan.

Also the seats for the new stadium could be black/grey, moving away from that terrible yellow.

Uncovered stands are great in the States, not so good here.

There is nowhere suitable for a purpose built stadium, nor the money to build one. People suggest Newtown Park but you would lose any fans from outside the core of Wellington.

I'm not all that familiar with Wellington but surely there is somewhere to build a little stadium?

The money would probably be the main issue.

How much would a 15k stadium cost?

Rectangular, with let's say both main stands having a roof.

A lot. But you need it to be where the current stadium is. Anywhere else would lose out of town fans (from Hutt valley etc).

There really isn't. They had a hard enough time finding a location to build the ASB Indoor Sports Center, let alone a location to build a 20k seater stadium.

You could probably build a purpose built football stadium right next to the cake tin with some half decent planning. The money is the main issue..

Money would be an issue there.

"Why are we spending millions to build a stadium next to a stadium?"

"So the nix fans can experience a slightly better atmosphere"

Ka-ro-ri Park.
No contest (just build a four lane access route going through the Makara hill to J'ville).

Realistically, what options are there?... the only space in Wellington that people can still get to from the 'burbs is the waterfront.

There are existing stadia that could be redeveloped (ie: Newtown, RLP, Hutt Rec, Porirua Pk, Fraser Pk) but each of those have an epic downside in terms of fan access (ie: for most it'll suck).

Given they're about to spend millions on Westpac - there isn't going to be anything happening there any time soon (in a rectangularising sense) so unless they bite the bullet on the Basin (unlikely) or someone wants a Wellington team in the NRL; how is it going to be funded? Taxpayers understandably won't have a bar of it.

Why would anyone want to build a purpose built stadium for a team that has become a travelling roadshow. It would need to be privately funded as i cant see rate payers wanting any part of it.

As i said, a time machine is the only solution here. Building a round cake tin instead of a rectangle cake tin was a big mistake.

Permalink Permalink

the cake tin needed to be circular to cater for all sports that used the facilities, cricket, rugby were the main players when stadium was built - football didn't even have a real presence at that stage. WE basically have to use what we have - the council isn't going to throw more money into a purpose built stadium which is used for 5 months of the year! If the a-league was longer and provided 9-10 months of usage then maybe. Space is the other main factor, anywhere other than current location of Westpac is dumb, parkin in newtown is horrid and having to bus after a train for out of towners would be annoying - Karori is just as bad, the Hutt rec could well be an option but it would be that the Wgtn fans would be doing the reverse of the current Hutt fans.

I can only see the Westpac stadium being reconfigured into a rectangular stadium some time in the distant future (hopefully with a roof). It would suit its major tennants, Hurricanes, Lions and Phoenix, and their fans. I don't ever see a new stadium being built to cater for the phoenix elsewhere than where the westpac stadium currently is.

Cheaper to knock it down and rebuild than strengthen it to put one on.

If someone offered to pay to knock it down and rebuild it rectangular, the council would probably jump at the chance. But they are not gonna do anything if they have to pay for it.

So what, on that basis these forums would be deader than they are as most of the stuff has been brought up before in one form or another.

I'll some up this thread.

"lets build a new 15k seated stadium for the Phoenix"

"No where to put it at the moment and there is no money to do it anyway."

What else is there to discuss ? Pipe dream. I understand the off season is long but Jesus........

I just thought I mention the idea in that article that stated smaller stadiums are better for the A League, and see how that could be accomplished in Wellington. Nothing wrong with that?

You gotta think about the possibilities.

The other option would be make the crowd bigger LOL

Funny how 75000 or so Liverpool fans (presumably most living in Australia) turn up for a Liverpool game but

are nowhere to be seen for Victory games...

When playing cards its best to play your strong suits .... crowds and memberships is not a strong hand to be playing at this stage .... Your live TV coverage, and media awareness of Football are your strong suits...
BTW that 90 million figure outside Australia, NZ & PNG is mainly Asian and in the same or similar time zone as NZ ... further they go on holidays ....

Chuck in covered temporary stands on the sides in front of the main stands. leave the curves behind the goal post. Surely modern engineering can build kit set stands that can be assembled quickly and trucked in and out.

Do the smaller configuration for rugby and football, pulling them down for the sevens.

Sounds a little bit like what they are doing for the extra seats for the All Whites qualifier.

While we're at it, why don't we build an indoor training pitch next to it for the nix to train on ? I don't see why we shouldn't.

Of course it does. It sends the message that we have got better things to do like skiing, tramping, sailing, shopping and building forts.

In fact, if more people started turning up at Westpac we would have them electronically filtered out of the TV broadcasts.

We know what we're doing.

So apparently the WCC have looked into this already and beleive it's viable. It will be built in 2017. They will send me some concept art soon.
