Huge result for us at the end of the day. Next two games are against a poor brisbane and a poor wsw, no reason we can't win those as well. I think a realistic target would genuinely be 7 points from the first three games. We need the points early, because the next four after that are all tough - think it's adelaide, City, Perth and Sydney - so it's crucial we get as much confidence and as many points as possible going into those games

Think your getting a bit  carried away we scored two very scratchy goals. Things look promising and plenty to work on and if they improve as we all hope then no reason they can't get some decent points from those other 4 games.

I don't think I am, I'm being realistic. After brizzy and wsw we've got some really tough games. I think we will lose to City and Perth, so if we are going to do anything this season then we should be beating two of the sharkier teams in the league. I know it was scrappy, but Newcastle is a far better team than either the roar or the wanderers at the moment, and there were only a few moments where we looked uncomfortable. I think it's reasonable to say we can win the next two games

I think we can beat City TBH, not sure about Perth though.

I was at the City v Vuc game and city looked very good imo; much better than us - will be interesting to see where we are at by the time that game comes around.

I watched the full Vic-City game on telly and expect us to have a tough gig against City.  Victory ran out of ideas despite having good players, and City simply beat them on the counter.  I thought Warren Joyce introducing Riley McGree with 10 minutes to go was inspirational.

Also, without wanting to pile on DJ JJS, Roar are definitely not a poor side. They have a lot of firepower and would've destroyed CCM yesterday if they had taken even half their chances. In fact I would go so far as to say that if Aloisi doesn't easily get them into the top 3 or 4 he will have made a dogs breakfast of it. We will have our work cut out getting any kind of decent result next week.

Early days yet but for me after a good look at all the teams it's clear that almost all of them have better squads and more depth, which at some point in the season is going to hurt us. Even so I didn't think WSW, Perth, Jets, CCM or Adelaide were so far ahead of us that we can't be competitive and challenge for a finals spot.

Agree. DJ does tend to dribble a lot. :)

shouldn't matter who the DJ is, aren't they given some guidelines? Yesterday was the most inane collection of musical dross, played at times we don't need to hear it. Do some people really think we wanna hear all those crap songs from the 80s again, just because there is a free kick awarded? I've already given up going to hurricanes games, cos they are brim full with these godawful musical interludes.

oh yes thats right, I'm the wanker here. Any opinion I post on this forum you seem to disagree with, and that's fine, I respect that because it's reciprocated. But you're pretty arrogant and bullish in your approach to shooting down what I have to say, which I reckon is a far more wanky trait than simply having a different perspective on something.

Jesus christ I told you to pipe down because you said that I tend to dribble a lot, not because you disagree with my argument. But go on then, have another pop at me personally. The genesis of this whole thing was me in essence saying that I hope we can get some points off the next two games, as the four games after that look pretty tough. That's really not that controversial an opinion, so the fact that that comment has led to this is pathetic

Watched a replay this afternoon. Pretty scratchy game which is somewhat understandable given its early in the season. Thought it was pretty even so pretty happy to get 3 points. It was probably one of those games that we would have lost in previous seasons. So while I'm not getting carried away, it's pleasing to see us grind out a result that was somewhat undeserved.

Lots of things I was really happy with, but I was expecting (hoping for) one or two more exciting attacking moments that showed we could surprise teams. Ground out a result, but didn't get out of 2nd or 3rd on attack IMO. Which means I think there is more firepower than what we've seen so far.

Imagine what a finisher like Rossi could do in the situations Krishna and Williams found themselves in.

Even a big man up front as a pivot who can hold the play up for the faster players to play off of. Feel like we’re missing one cog to the machine. Anyway I think I can say we’re all excited to see how this professional performance will carry on to the rest of the season, COY fudgeing N

I had wondered about the thinking behind this. Presumably it's because Dura doesn't have the legs to sprint half the pitch if needed?

The flip side of that, is if they hit us on the counter from a corner (which is bound to happen), he's not going to have the legs to chase them down either.

It shows you how likely it is to score a goal from a certain position on the field. Highly likely to score from a shot inside the 5m box, very likely from around the penalty, the moment you try from outside the 16m box chances go down very quick. It’s statistics.

Ronaldo’s expected goals is just a tiny margin better than avarage, but he shoots very often in high expected goals areas and he does it very often. Remember Ernie always saying try to shot from inside the box, it just more likely to score from from there.

I guess it's that, yeah, Dura can't get up and back at pace. Rudan's looked at it and said, well Dura's got the smarts and the experience to get his positioning right to try and close down the space while he waits for Doyle, Taylor, Fents, Cacace and the rest of the cavalry to arrive.

I'd rather Dura be ten yards ahead of the bloke on the counter with time to think than trying to chase him down.

If you want to hear it, stay at home or in your car and listen to it there. We're here to watch the football !!

This feedback is being taken to the club. The announcer/DJ is not at fault here. He was doing as was directed. Watch this space.

Directions from who I thought Domey had made it clear when the music was announced the club went interested in using it. Or are the club saying one thing and doing another.

It's a solution looking for a problem.  People have stopped going not because the "fan experience" is not entertaining enough, it's because we have been crap!  If the team is more successful we will get better crowds, it's that simple - adding music during the games (a) does not improve the atmosphere, and (b) is far more likely to put off the people who go every week than add to the crowds with people who actually like music during games.

So based on FTBL  player Ratings it was a very poor game?

But we beat the 2017/18 League toppers

Tom Doyle - 5                 Jason Hoffman - 6

Andrew Durante - 6        Nigel Boogard - 4

Steve Taylor - 6.5            Nikolai Topor-Stanley - 5

Louis Fenton - 5              Daniel Georgievski - 4

Mandi - 6                          Lachlan Jackson - 4.5

Sarpreet Singh - 6.5        Matthew Ridenton - 4.5

Alex Rufer - 6.5                Steven Ugarkovic - 5

Liberato Cacace - 6          Ronny Vargas - 5

Roy Krishna - 6.5             Dimi Petratos - 6

David Williams - 5.5         Jair - 4

Substitutes

Mitch Nichols - 5               Kaine Sheppard - 4

Max Burgess - 4                Ivan Vujica - 5

Nathan Burns - N/A           Mitch Austin - 5

Team average

       5.80                                       4.6

These seem like mostly fair ratings, if not a bit harsh on Fenton. We still have a long way to go.

Was somewhat surprised to see the stats after the game - that we had only 40% possession and won only 44% of the "duels".

You are always amped and cognitively biased watching your team live, I thought the possession and duels were pretty even.

Also only 3 shots on target against 6.

I'm a totally blinkered Nix fan.

We murdered em lols

Only 60% passing accuracy vs 76%.

About the only stat we won was corners.

this was my first game in a while - brought my 3 year old son along for his first game and he enjoyed the experience (watched f all of the game but seemed pretty pumped when we got home).   when I decided recently to go I scanned the fixture list and was a bit surprised to see this will be the only game earlier than 7pm.  Didn't 5pm Sunday used to be the standard fixture time for us?    A shame as I'd be likely to bring the boy along to multiple further games this season but with no more early games I won't.

I guess you can't hit every demographic with the fixture list but they seem to be missing this part of the market with the kick off times.  I've seen some comments that we have no say in the fixture list - is that right?  Surely the club puts forward their preferences in some way

Was a good crowd in but that was presumably aided by the good weather and the holiday Monday

My guess is that Rudan is not going to bench Dura until he has to, even if he has Fox etc available. Could be a mental thing for the team. There might be a slow transition depending on what type of opposition we're playing, and Dura is shaping up throughout the season.

Incidentally, I assumed Taylor must be ancient based on all his achievements in the EPL already under his belt. Pleased to see he is way younger (born 1986) than Dura (born 1982) , and only a year older than Krishna (born 1987), and two years older than Williams (born 1988).

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Personally I felt it was more that Victory didn't convert their chances. Troisi had some great opportunities, as did their new striker. That said, city were very strong too and both of those sides are going to be very tough to play this year.

Excited for a win first up, fairly even game could really have gone either way but perhaps a sign our luck is changing.

Lots of love for Kurto, but I thought for all the positives there were also some negatives. Shot stopping and distribution looked really good, but his dealing with balls in the air was really worrying and he was hesitant to come off his line to through balls. Could just be a confidence thing first up and hopefully we see that improving through the season.

I don't rate those ratings -  Rufer given credit for Fenton's work below.

Alex Rufer - 6.5

Got back in time to block former team-mate Matthew Ridenton's shot off the line on 30 minutes. A decent performance as the tempo raised and Newcastle surged for an equaliser.
