First 30 odd minutes was complete dross. I think that period was the worst we have played this year. Gradually started coming into it after that. Not impressed with the ref at all, haven't seen a replay but looked like he made a huge number of mistakes. Krishna looked pretty sharp when he came on, better than I expected, hopefully I was wrong about him. All the subs did actually although I think Merrick should have taken off Hernandez rather than Hysugems. Time well past it for Brockie to be moved to the bench; completely out of form, low on confidence and doesn't look to be working hard enough off the ball.

Dont think Carlos has shown us anything like his best form in any game this season.Yes when he brings his A game he is one of the best but we have still to see it.
Seem to recall he used to drift in and out of games when he was at the Victory, but unlike with us when he was in the game for them he was delivering a lot more.
Normo's coming home
Think Carlos' injuries are catching up with him and his motivation looks sub-par at the moment; think a lot of it is stemming from frustration at himself that he isn't producing to the level he used to.
Happy with the draw, really. Hate playing against CCM.

My 2c:
MOM Riera. Or possibly McBreen :)
Bench Brockie.
Cunningham is not a midfielder, he's a striker, use him as such. So many times he butchered the "midfield type" action that I was moaning about how crap he was just before he scored.
So:
Boxy (or leo who brings more on attack but less on defense), Siggy, Dura, Muscat
Riera, Lia
Hernandez
Boyd Waffles Cunningham
Subs: Brockie (on for Cunningham or Boyd @60mins), Leo/Boxy, Ridenton, Krishna(on for Cunningham or Boyd @80mins), Italiano
Benefit of Boxy on the bench is that he effectively provides injury cover for the entire back four. Krishna showed enough to get another run off the bench (emphasis on the "run").
So many of our goals have come from turnovers and quick attacks that I was quite grumpy when I was seeing Riera or Hernandez looking like they were about to get a turnover and Waffles, Brockie and Cunningham all sitting in an offside position because they were too slow to get back by 3 meters.
Dont understand why we didnt play leo instead of Boxy. we have no-one to go forward and give us width
Because Leo is constantly out of position when he plays full back, which drags Dura or Siggy out and complete screws our defensive structure. Would rather keep Boxall there and keep it reasonably tight at the back thanks.

We need more of a game plan against CCM. We struggle with their compact defence. We aren't prepared to release a quick counter through ball and out wide we only have our fullbacks who are not prepared or not able to attack quickly. Our passing isn't good/creative enough yet to break them down. The number of through balls that didn't get through was a lot. I think maybe when cunning/waff/Brockie all stuffed up in a row it was one of the only successful ones?
I would say that a lot of what you say it is true, and can be attributed to a better cardio fitness of the Mariners.
Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Not sure that Boxall looked very comfortable last evening, didnt look particularly quick or athletic. gave the ball away a lot and in common with most Nix players seems to use his left foot for standing only, Would much rather him at CB or off the bench and able to give cover for the whole back row

Not lots of positives about last evening but thought that Manny and Reira were both very good. probably time that brockie had a spell on the bench

'twas quite frustrating to watch indeed.
I normally try and minimise my rude words during the match but this one had more than a few expletives hurled at the team, players and the ref.

Conditions were the winner on the day. Boxall didnt have great first half attack wise but some great little cameoes second half!
Still feel the game plan changes when Carlos plays..and not for the better. At times he was deep then he was trying to do too much upfront. Midfield wasnt well sorted for ydays game in comparison to last three.
Crap conditions again tho!

Ernie doesn't hold back.
"The home side did cause problems for the champions in the second spell but their progress was often stopped by illegal tactics.
“It is disappointing when you have players breaking through and getting scythed down as Albert Riera and Roy Krishna were.
“At the end Carlos (Hernandez) went through three players who all had a kick at him and we didn’t even get a free kick which, being on the edge of the penalty area, would have provided a good opportunity.
“We knew we were causing them problems because they were committing so many fouls.
“I think they got five yellow cards.”
Wait, Ernie says Carlos did something? That's not the impression I got from posters here.
(Convinced about Ernie now, but far from convinced about Carlos.)

Yep. I reckon we've consistently looked best with only one of Ifill/Stein/Carlos on the field, though Stein central in front of Carlos can work. But also reckon Ernie has to persevere with Carlos. We've got him for another season and a half, so you'd hope Ernie can get him right. Otherwise #expensivewhiteelephant
I suppose keep him on the pitch and look for it to come right.
Fenton was compensating for what I see as issues with a narrow 4132, (Kenny/Stein/Lia in the middle). Good to see Boxall getting a run and we'll see how he improves with the nosebleeds over half.
I can handle Stein up front with any two of Brockie/Boyd/Kenny/Krishna wider getting in front of Carlos, in a 4141->4123 and 451 when needed, Stein central; but I am not liking what I think is a narrow 4132 without Fenton and with just Brockie and Stein up front.
Agreed Carlos wasn't the best today, but to be honest I'm more worried about Kenny. Might be hidden by the goal that he scored (which was absolute class), but his defensive "work" down the right really puts us under pressure IMO. He either goes missing too often, or if he is there gets strolled straight past. Not just this game either.
I thought Kenny had a pretty good game and was one of our better players on the day even before the goal.

Within his limitations, he did have a good game.
I get the impression he is a team player rather than a genius loner like Smeltz or Brockie :-)
His output for the team will likely improve once he starts reading his teammates' game better.

Yeah it's interesting how people can see things differently. I had a guy behind me in the second half moaning about how rubbish #5 had been all game (he never worked out Boxall's name), whereas I thought he was not too bad.
P.S. Not faulting Kenny's lack of effort, he definitely get's around the park, and adds a bit offensively - I just get the impression that he leaves us exposed defensively quite a bit by being out of position, or not tackling effectively. Sometimes when something like that sticks out for you you start to look for it though, so it could be a bit unfair.

I think he looked good when he was going forward and within sight of the goal. His midfield action was average.
I went to see ACFC vs TW live at Kiwitea Street and watched the Phoenix on TV and frankly the ASBP game was much more exciting. I know the strong winds don't help but there was far too much sloppy play at Westpac Stadium and the atmosphere sounded pretty subdued. I can tell you the albeit much smaller band of singers at ACFC gave it their all as Wellington fought back to 3-2. I can tell you which game should have been on TV, but unfortunately you'd hardly know NZ had a national league.
What's your point? You could put 3 goats and a pine cone in city shirts on Kiwitea by themselves and you'd rather that on TV than the Phoenix

It's called having an opinion.
If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid
Deservedly, I think. Not sure how you arrive at that metaphor (goats and a pine cone in team shirts) but probably there is a long-forgotten folk proverb somewhere.
Now if this was here in Christchurch, it would be "three goats and a road cone". They're bloody everywhere. Cones, not goats.

Foreign cones ?
Quite a few of them are. Must be seasonal migration, or a rebuild frenzy.
Lots of Irish, North English and also Spanish accents around. Makes me think they'd want to support a local football club here.

Loved Riera's reaction to the penalty miss.

Me too. Both him and Carlos gave the ol' get up arm wave to the crowd as they ran back to halfway for the goal kick.

I think we're going to need to modify the game plan for the rest of the season. Fenton is a big loss - he was starting to get forward and even though end product was a bit lacking he dragged defence out wide which created more space. If we're not going to try Leo in defence, and use Boxall, then I think we can add another more attack minded player. You could maybe justify Lia when Fenton was bombing on, but on Saturday he was an absolute passenger. He just gives us absolutely nothing.
Frustraingly, we looked a bit toothless after 4 games where our attack looked more dangerous. I didn't think CCM had to do an awful lot to keep us out in the second half.
Normo's coming home
CCM were definately missing McGlichey and Flores. They tidy that midfield up and created so much for the CCM cause in the past. Be interesting to see how McGlinchey goes in his Asian adventure. Shame Boyds lob at the end was saved. I reckon is twas a shot from our angle. I' always liked Reddy but was disappointed with that instance in the second half. He lost some credibility for that.

I was merely making an observation, shared incidently by a Wellingtonian who also came to Kiwitea Street and frequently attends Phoenix games. All due respect I was expecting a lot better from the Phoenix game and suggest it would not have been exciting for any neutrals watching on TV. Much of it was quite dull to watch. My point JV, in the face of your nonsensical outburst, is that the ACFC vs TW game deserved to be on TV and would have impressed any neutrals watching.
