R16 vs Brisbane Roar | Sat 21st Jan | 7:35pm | RoF
You'd back us to keep a clean sheet or at most only concede one which is a pretty good feeling.
I'll be interested to see the starting line up. WeeMac surely deserves to start; he was terrific in both games and made a huge difference off the bench. Probably his two best performances in a while.
But who do you drop? Kosta who got a goal and looks like he may come into a bit of form now? Roy, who has assisted or scored basically every goal this season? Smeltz, who has made a huge difference up front?
It's a toughie. For mine, I'd probably drop Kosta. I just think WeeMac suits the balance of the team more and offers a lot on set pieces. Kosta can not take corners.

Steady on guys, we only need a 3-goal win to move into a home-final spot.

1-0 would do it!
We'd be on the same GD, but we would have won more games.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

WeeMac was a big part of that win against CCM, though. Plus a few of our players might pull up a bit sore after the MV game because of the short turnaround.

Does the A-League use games won before goals scored as a tiebreaker? That's bizarre.

Nah need to win by 2, then we'd have a better goal difference. Win by 1 they'll have the same goal difference, but they'd have scored more goals

Wee mac to start. Smeltz to rest, Roy up top. Maybe even parkhouse in for kosta.
Yeah, probably agree. Though I'd be inclined to start Smeltz and just take him off after 60.

I stand corrected, 2-0 required, but on the Goal difference if we win 1-0, then both teams would have -1, Roar would still be ahead due to having scored more goals.

One quarter of our remaining games are against Brisbane. They seem to have a lost their early season form too.
If they beat us on Saturday they jump six points in front of us on the table, which is not good. They'd be another team in the top-six that'd be too hard to catch from there.

Holiday or have you moved to Wellington Dougie?

Was super impressed with Smeltzy on Tuesday night, takes charge leading that front line and tireless work-rate hassling the defenders into making mistakes.
Seemed like such a weird out-of-the-blue signing at the time with his #99 shirt and everything but man he's made a massive difference up top.
Game changer I reckon. Needs to start.
As for Kosta, his well taken goal might have given him an extra confidence boost but you still would say he's the lowest form player in the starting 11 at the moment.
Do you start him? Do you swap Roy in?

It's not like he has to compete with Fenton for a starting place.

I think we'll stick with the same XI. 3 games in 8 days isn't quite as bad as it sounds when there's no travel involved (although obviously still not ideal). McGlinchey and Finkler are both more than capable of having an impact off the bench, they'll probably just get to come on a bit earlier for the fatiguing players. Why would you change anything after that performance?
My only question mark is how Vinnie's legs are going to hold up, but given there's no natural replacement for him I think they may not have much of a choice.

I thought he was a strange signing too, but happy to be proven wrong. Seeing Smeltz play really shows how far Watson still has to go to become a starting A-League striker.

I kinda agree, but also think WeeMac was our best performer against CCM and did terrific off the bench. If anything, he needs more minutes.

Yeah McGlinchey is the one here who should feel aggrieved for sure. Des and Greeny have a proper selection dilemma in the attacking third!

I re-watched the last 20 min of the game, Kosta was involved in almost every attack, looks sometimes unlucky because he has problem beating the man. But against Victory it was Kosta here a tackle, Kosta there a run, Kosta corners right, Kosta free kick left, he almost got a header int the net. His goal in the 93 min, when we are 2-0, up was just created out of nothing.
Oh, and rewatch the first 33 seconds of the game, the little one-two with Ro(l)y how he took the ball with the chest and shot it direct, this is top drawer stuff! He coming into form, I'm sold!

Another, not necessarily uncharitable, view could be that he had a point to prove to the club that did not hold on to him. Perhaps at the end of his and Gui's stay at Victory there were unsuccessful contract negotiations we know nothing about.

I think he's been very poor when trying to beat players and generally his decision making in the attacking 3rd has been lacking. However; this is in comparison to how he played for the Victory, which is perhaps a bit unfair. He was unplayable at times for the Vuc - whenever he got the ball, the crowd thought something would happen. That same feeling hasn't followed him here.
Even when he's playing poorly, he never slacks off defensively though, which is great. You can never accuse him of not working hard.

Yeah I think he's excellent.imo he has just had a patch where his form has dropped off.
Class is class though and I'm glad we signed him

And it was that defensive effort that got him his goal: 94th minute, sprints 30 yards across field to put in a tackle, robs his man, strides away and smashes the ball into the bottom corner. Brilliant stuff! Apart from a few dodgy setpieces he was absolutely outstanding throughout the match.
I also think he's really enjoying partnering Smeltz up front too. It's like Berisha without the cut-snake madness. Maybe Kosta needs someone to boss him around a bit.
