Wow, there is definitely some elitist bullshit on here when it comes to a few people.

Auckland had a far broader crowd come up, A LOT more families and kids, Wellington has their "die hard contingent" that turn up now hence it's only 7000.
We were in the main stand it sucked, so went down to the East Stand after about 12mins, I didn't once hear the Adelaide are faggots, but Fuck you Adelaide? It's a football game, its banter, some of you getting into a twist about that? I guess A LOT of you haven't been to a foreign game of football then.

No doubt there were some muppets amongst that element of support but some of the attitudes of Wellington nix fans on here are frankly easily as bad, if they don't have these Auckland games, Wellington crowds ain't getting bigger, so you yourselves will be your own downfall. Which it sucks cause I love the Nix.

Our media love nothing more than to find something to beat the Phoenix and the Fever with and have done so in the past over chants like that.  They have pretty much died out in the Fever Zone here because of this.

If the media got hold of it they would be tarnishing the Phoenix and Fever not Aucklanders and people are protective of that reputation.

There is an equal amount of anti Wellington sentiment from Aucklanders on this board as anti Auckland sentiment from Wellingtonians.

That's interesting, because we were chatting in the pub beforehand about how the YF are generally a "dads" demographic, whereas, say, the MVFC crowd or the RBB are generally young male 20-somethings, hence the "aggro" coming from the latter crew. I wonder whether a possible Auckland A-League fanbase might aim for a whole new demographic, like that?

Anyway, seriously: if there was an Auckland A-League team, I would buy a season ticket, continue as a WPFC member, but not join the active support of either side, because it would parochial shit-flinging in both directions ("dying city" vs "JAFA scum") and include me out of that shit. I don't like it when the YF in Auckland start Auckland-bashing as it is.

What's wrong with swinging both ways?

Just because other countries/cities use homophobic language doesn't mean it should be acceptable here. Homophobic language is not banter. End of. I don't care whether it is in Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch or Napier. It's not acceptable.

I didn't once defend homophobic banter, of course thats out of order, but saying Fuck Adelaide is nothing to cry about, I know New Zealand media are pretty sad, but if that's the worst they could pull out of the game....

To clarify the homophobia was never a collective chant, but got yelled out plenty of times. Also "tits out for the boys" chanted together by 30+ dudes directly at one young woman multiple times. If finding that disgusting is elitist bullshit then sign me up for chairman of the elitist bullshit club.

"Fuck you Adelaide" is pointlessly negative and antagonistic, and heaps of surrounding kids were joining in cos swearing is cool.
The Fever and attending Phoenix games has an awesome reputation for an electric atmosphere and super positive vibes. It's early enough to hold on to that, why let it go! It's a pretty unique thing, I reckon. It's not like it is overseas and that's just great.

Also sorry for not having a very high post count! Too busy working to make enough money to fly down for a couple of games a season and fly to Australia for away games and buying stripeys and buying 8 of my friends tickets to this game so they can experience my favourite thing! Sorry! Can't be a true fan!

don't mean to bring a downer to it- but Stein missed a one-on-one he should have finished and at least one other good opportunity. Boyd did nothing with his breaks, though he shot well, but low percentages. Brockie missed a difficult open net, and went for the glorious but difficult with his other chance.

Kenny and Carlos winning the game for us. Our striking problem mushroom seems to have grown back.

Any moron can say that - it takes no creativity and no imagination.  This is the main reason one should not say that in front of 8 year olds sitting in the row next to you. It would make them think that is all the brains one needs to be a YF member.

Wasn't YF 'members' who were shouting it though? Unless I'm mistaken? Point taken though.

Yeah, it's not the most intelligent chant in the world, I agree. The bottom line is that there will be "foul" language at football matches so anybody who takes an 8 year old to a game should be aware of that but there's a huge difference between the odd F bomb being bandied around in the heat of the moment and having it chanted by a large group for any length of time just for the hell of it.

I also think that a large number of football chants are negative and anatagonistic, that's not gonna change, but as MFC said, there's no creativity or imagination in there. Or humour.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Jag: Wasn't YF 'members' who were shouting it though? Unless I'm mistaken? Point taken though.

(Can you quote on the app?)

No not at all. Kind of forgotten what my point was now ha. Was just a little riled up by it all after the game.

I guess it's just something to be wary of, like Hard News said, we know it wasn't the Yellow Fever. But other people there and the media don't. And if it had been easier for active support to all sit together, these guys would have been a minority and stamped out pretty quickly.

Most importantly, YF and the Phoenix are rad, please keep coming to Auckland (but only like once a year, cool).

Hahaha. You've been around long enought to know the score. If there is nothing to worry about, we will find something. It's the Forum way!
