Definitely not the Heart JV. the last thing they will want right now is a trip to Westpac. And there will be a few more looking closely at the draw over the next few weeks....

Great win, great goal from Hicks, fantastic seeing them play like they expect to win away from home.  Loved this comment from Ernie, commenting on the away loss to Brisbane:

"They've gone bottom of the league [in 2012-13] to all of a sudden they're really disappointed away from home not to beat the top team in the competition," he said.

"I couldn't work with a better bunch, who really want to improve. It's been a really pleasant surprise working with the players, the board, the technical committee, all the staff."

Definitely more nerve wracking without Riera and Boxall, but three goals did the business.

The result was fantastic but I did not enjoy the game as much as the last 4/5. We gave away easy possession and although there were some great goals from both teams the defense from us and the Jets was poor. Hope we are back on track for Heart next week.

With Rufer, Ridenton and JBS all playing today it really showed how may players were out. But I think from the last few weeks we've got some great depth now. Guys like Hicks coming on don't weaken our team too much. Cunningham and Boxall being back will give us even more strength.

Good win but Lia's performance wasn't the best tonight.

The talent stays, why should they go? Imagine you had to choose between Victory/Muscat or Nix/Merrick?

Only for game time or Money....That's usually the issue.

Or training facilities. Or the lifestyle. Or the weather. Or the fact that you're much more likely to be noticed playing in a city of 4 million which most people in Europe have actually heard of. Or the fact that we train all our young Kiwis to believe that only success overseas counts. (Note that no-one gave a crap about Lorde until AFTER she'd cracked the US market.)

Just watched the game and that is a great win. Defensively we were a bit of a shambles but we scored some great goals, our imports stood out and our kids did well. Many reasons to be happy

Three damn points.  I watched this on a stream so bad I thought I was watching pac man underwater...So have no idea who played well etc.  I reckon this would be one of the wins of the season for ernie - smart fellah.

I thought Ridenton played well and has good distribution. Got caught on the ball a couple times, but in general was very solid.

Shermy needs to work on his positioning but I thought he did well when he pushed up so passes just.

Great to see hicks score, he has looked likely a couple times and i THINK THIS WILL GIVE HIM A HUGE BOOST.

Misery ;)

We missed Riera, and couldn't apply the same midfield pressure without him. But we continued to play. I though Vinnie was good again (even without Riera to do the donkey work for him).

Shermanator was pretty horrific, but he's young and they went after him. Every team needs a ginger, so it's worth persevering with.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Its the whole point in what we're doing. Get these youth out and about overseas, the clubs made no secret of that. And then when they're gone, spots open up for new players. etc etc... its only going to make the AWs stronger. Imagine getting the point where we're not even looking to the A-League any more for AWs because we have so many guys playing in Europe, Asia... etc. That would be pretty cool.

Think thats a bit harsh. He wasn't getting any support from either the midfield or a centre back. Numerous times he was in a 1v1 situation with noone else with 20 yards of him. With no cover, that is inviting an half decent winger to take you on. Their first goal in particular showed that. Once he got a yard or two on JBS, Goodwin took 2 or 3 touches before he shot.

Depends how you look at it I guess. "He got skinned by Goodwin who then scored" is another way to describe the scenario you related.

I didn't get the impression that he got any less cover than Boxall or Fenton has done in the past, but he did get beaten more and looked generally more risky.

But, as I said, that's to be expected for someone so inexperienced.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I was getting frustrated with the lack of protection and support from the rest of the team to JBS, it was very obvious that the Jets were targetting him. Sigmund and Durante were no where to be seen when the Dutch guy was raking JBS up, impressed that Lia stepped in to stop the abuse.

Leggy's right.  Both defenses were not going well.  Against most other sides (even the weaker sides we still have to play) we will struggle to score three goals to win every game if we leak two like that.

Presuming Lia was intended to play the Riera role, he was often caught too high and unable to get back.  As a consequence and for the first time in a long time we saw Sig drawn out of the line a couple of times, and one cost us a goal.  One thing Riera has done really well has ensured a double team on the wide attackers pressing the FBs.  Lia generally wasn't there.  imho he's had the armchair ride playing further forward with all the heat on Carlos giving Lia more time and space and mr Reliability sitting in behind him.  Not saying he's useless, but he is limited in what he offers and I'd like to see a better player in the squad and starting.

Not the end of the world, we were still playing a lot of very good football.  Ridenton and Caira got a bit more exposure and development in a match situation under pressure and thought they both did OK or better.  Sherminator was not getting a heck of a lot of help and I thought he did adjust somewhat as the game went on, till he started getting cramp. Plus Manny nearly got himself sent off coping with what was coming at him on that side; so Shermi was up against it.

It will be interesting what adjustments Ernie makes with Riera still out.  I think he could just get Lia to hold deeper.   But Boxall back will also help so, touch wood, we'll come through fine.

Yeah I noticed that too, good on Lia for bringing some mongrel though. Jaliens was being a huge cock, cant say he didn't deserve the spill. I just laughed

nice touch on Radio Sport this morning

they did a quick review of the sport highlights of the weekend in the middle of a long cricket discussion and didn't mention the 'Nix.  Waddle piped up with "What about the Phoenix.  That was a great goal from Hicks.  I was watching it."   They played a soundtrack of hundreds of clattering footsteps followed by " Get on the Bandwagon", set to trumpets.  The bandwagon is now official.

Pop quiz, in which seasons have we had the most away wins in our history thus far? Must be close to it I reckon.

I'm upset that 442 missed out on the perfect headline. They got: "Hicks Sends Nix into Top Six". It should of course have been "Hicks Kicks Nix Into Top Six". Possibly with slick tricks.

Just saw the goal highlights. All the goals in that game were fantastic. Goodwin looked red-hot; he was certainly beating our ginger fellow, but it wasn't like he was making JBS look stupid.

a search on wikipedia reckons it is four, in 2011/12. which also saw our greatest away points haul of 15. up to three wins and 11 points so far this season.

I was critical of JBS the other week when he played for the reserves against HBU. I looked reasonably closely at him yesterday and was quite happy with his performance under trying circumstances. I though he did ok and was not out of place. He certainly had a torrid time of it against the goalscorer [who I understand trialed with Reading last year] but didn't give up [his body did tho lol]

Hicks jinx, kicks Nix into top Six.

On one of the replays you could see both Siggy and Dura giving Jaliens the verbals after he initially laid into JBS following the tangle with Goodwin.

Thought Ridenton played well, but occasionally looked like he was just jogging back after getting beaten. Lia did well but at times did not screen the back four a la Riera, hence perhaps why Siggy got pulled out of the line to close down Caravella before the first goal.

JBS looked great going forward, first cross he put in that Waffles just missed was a cracker and his passing out of the back was generally really accurate

Terrific goals, Hicks turning two defenders inside out and slotting the winner was awesome! Our three year old girl was yelling "Go Phoenix" and high fiving rest of whanau :)

As others have said, it was obvious that having Riera missing threw a huge spanner in the works and upset our midfield hugely.

I thought JBS was very shaky defensively. It's alright saying "he looked good going forward', but he's a defender and going forward isn't his #1 priority! I prefer my defenders to be able to defend, 1 v 1 or otherwise. Not writing the kid off, I think he's got potential and will come good with time.

Good away win, into the top 6, onwards and upwards. Top 4 here we come   :-)

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

The Heart Game might be a bit closer than some have been saying, they've won 3 or 4 on the trot so have their own mini roll going.
