You guys think your doomed against us?

I was thinking we're going to have a problem, coach still fairly new, new players who need to fit in, suspensions and injuries and a run of poor form.......and now you guys will come out swinging after that Heart match.

Well, I hope you're right for this week at least.

I reckon Ernie will get back on it and you'll make the finals.

Washing my Din at the Tin and away shirt tomorrow (with a heaped spoonful of "bad mojo away").

Will be a Nix City or Pass to Ifill tee for Friday I think.

Nix City? Are they those 100% non-genuine shirts from Chumps of the World?

I am disgust.

No - they were a fund raising effort from BNUgirl and others back many seasons ago.

Very ska, very madness.

Sure - I think Ernie can pop on down to "Right Backs R Us" tomorrow and get one  (apart from John irving of course who is an import unless he can be injury cover for Reira).

There's loads on the shelf so will be easy to pick one out.

Aryn Williams looks handy, and he's available.

We play Boxall, Durante, Siggy and Manny across the back most weeks. In fact weren't they the 4 across the back when we beat Victory 5-0? Does that make the argument moot?

The big hole is the loss of Riera. I used to be a Lia hater until Riera feed him up to be useful. In my opinion he's not suited to that holding role.

I felt Hicks had a poor game, but that comes back to the experience argument.

No quick solutions available unless we can pick up a solid DM as injury cover. Matt Thompson perhaps since he's been sent to the naughty corner by Frankie Farina? Just until the Rieralucion can start again.

Yeah, that was the back 4. You can argue that it works. But sometimes it doesn't work. In my opinion Muscat is a better holding midfielder than left back, and yes, Boxall has played well in patches. The problem is the inconsistency, Yeah we won v Vctory 5-0. Good. But then the same back 4 lost 0-5 v Heart. Not so good.

I agree with the loss of Riera though. it is huge. But what is Vinnies role in the team then? I think we have better options, but thats my opinion and yes he isn't suited to a holding role.

I feel try Muscat at Holding, he played really well against Brisbane there first game of the season, hasn't played there since. Caria at Left back.

If we lose, then ok, maybe try something else.

See, you CAN post without implying that everyone else (including Ernie) is stupid. Well played.

Your changes to the lineup (Muscat to midfield, Caira to left back and Boyd in for Brockie) are pretty sensible I think.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Muscat to help Phoenix shore up the defence

Manny Muscat looks set to switch to a defensive midfield role for Wellington Phoenix's Friday night A-League clash with Central Coast Mariners in Gosford.

Phoenix missed Albert Riera in the 5-0 loss to Melbourne Heart on Sunday, prompting a re-think from coach Ernie Merrick.

Riera, who has had surgery on his groin and lower abdominal injury, will miss the remainder of the season - a blow for Phoenix as he has been outstanding in a screening role just in front of the back four.

Vince Lia has filled in for the past two matches - the 3-2 win against Newcastle Jets and defeat to Heart - but Merrick believes the 28-year-old Australian needs more support.

"We got away with it at Newcastle but we still conceded two goals," said Merrick.

"So the signs were there. I went with the same formation and game plan for the (Heart game) and we got caught out big time."

Muscat's expected switch means either Reece Caira or Josh Brindell-South will come in at left-back.

Merrick, who admitted he got the game plan wrong and was as much to blame as his players for Sunday's heavy defeat at Westpac Stadium, was confident there would be no lingering scars.

"The boys are well aware they never want to play that type of game again. That very, very poor performance just can't happen again for the rest of the season.

"But you don't go from being a very competitive team that are working well together and creating chances and scoring 15 goals to suddenly being a bad team."

Centre-back Ben Sigmund is also confident the team can bounce back against the Mariners, who have lost their past three matches and have dropped to fifth on the ladder. Phoenix is seventh, two points adrift of sixth-placed Sydney FC.

"We've got to turn it around on Friday. With the players we've got and the expectation we've got as a team we'll be fine," the All Whites defender said.

I love that Ernie takes as much blame for getting it wrong as the players. A good coach admits when he is wrong and tries to fix it

The fact you rag on Ernie for playing players out of position yet you list Hicks, a left footer, on the right.

I think Cunningham, a right footer, has looked significantly better on the left than the right. Difficult to comment on Hicks because I've never seen him play on the right but quite a few attacking midfielders are like that. It obviously didn't work too well with Hicks on the left and Cunningham on the right last week.
