Confirmation bias - people think Lia is shark so they focus on his errors far more than they do for other players who they don't consider shark. Not to say Lia doesn't occasionally have howlers but that was a solid performance from him and overall he's had a good season.

True to an extent, but I largely think Lia has been a bit sharke but readily admitted he had a good game against Perth.

Goes the other way too; few people defend him no matter what.

I hope it showed to all observers that the rest of the Nix aren't Nathan Burns' support act but in fact they deserve to be where they are regardless. I think the media, the Ozzies in particular, tend to over-emphasize Burns to the detriment of the rest of the team. I thought everyone played their part. It was a fantastic team effort. Proud of the boys.

Quite funny how Burns absence was mentioned every 2 seconds but A-Rod's wasn't.

Burns adds a lot, but I think he's about the 4th  most important player after Roly, Siggy, Dura.

To be missing the man the media claim is our best player and the much-less heralded man/boy who is often actually our best player and still win...

We've had a lot of fun with "flat track bully" (kudos for JV for changing his mind on that), but we haven't heard "waste of an import slot" recently. BTW, how is Kenny Cunningham?

Comment from Australia about Ernie getting lucky with a couple of recruits. I say nothing lucky about Burns, Rolly & A-Rod when Ernie already had runs on the board at Victory with guys like Kruse, Rojas even Carlos not to mention Fred etc.

I don't think that is quite fair. Yes, they do talk about Burns a lot but much of that is due to genuine excitement at seeing a forgotten Aussie player burst back into the limelight with some brilliant attacking play. Lots of other Nix players have been praised to the high heavens, especially Roly who is wowing every Oz pundit without exception, but also the likes of Dura, Siggy, Krishna and Riera get mentioned regularly as being right at the heart of the team's success.

Against Perth, even Jamie Harnwell who co-comentating on Fox said Dura was massive for the Nix.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Roly may be luck. Then again so was and is Broich. But with Krishna, there's nothing like the luck you get from working hard for a year.

+ Having one the fittest team, mentally strong to fight for 90 min is not luck, it is just good work.

This x10000. Its very evident this year that we are not dropping off late in the game. The stats support we are strong finishers and I think for the 2nd week on the trot, we took the lead right before shirt off.

Along with style, this is the major reason why we are seeing results this year - our fitness. This year we do not have an unfit Carlos and Ifill (with respect to his injury). When you look at what we had with Carlos and his inability to track back and get around the field, its a wonder Ernie put up with him for a year.

Luck? I thought Ange had identified him as a key potential signing when he was still playing in Germany and pursued him hard until he got his man? With Krishna Ernie was more or less taking a (calculated) punt  IMO. I'm still wondering how Roy will go when he hits a non-scoring spell a la Brockie.

This. Without the level of fitness the team has, we would be unable to play the brand of football we are at the moment

Agree with you on the 1st part. Need to put Riera ahead of Siggy & Dura in the 2nd part though.

Would agree with you in general, but I think both teams faded pretty significantly in the last 10-15 minutes of this game (even our goal was a bit against the run of play I thought). Totally understandable given the humidity/time difference etc but there were a few players out on their feet at the end (e.g. Roly)

I think some of the late game surge that we seem to have has to go down to Ernie's subs, not just the fitness of the team.  Quite often he's made the right calls to shift players further forward or back which has resulted in points.

Permalink Permalink

Very true. Often shifting the midfield around has changed the game.

I don't remember many games where he's got the subs wrong.

Brilliant!

I thought he'd peaked at:

"You are an Oompa-Loopma with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome"

But then he came up this:

"Fudge me! The Fabled Fijian's flashy footwork fleeces a few faltering fools follows a flurry of fury that fashions a fabulous finish fathering a frenzy of firey feelings for their faithful fans! Fudge Yeah!"

Game over!

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
