They are good lads as well.  Some were at the Kings watching Friday night's game with the Fever and plenty in the Bencher yesterday.

We've always enjoyed a visit from them and as they turned up in Palmerston North in numbers they share a bond with us.

I have now had the misfortune to watch the replay.

We were beyond woeful.

Grifffiths should have put us one up in the first minute.

Krishna totally mangled our next best opportunity when he couldn't control a ball in midfield.

Sigmund, Muscat and Durante were terrible. Far worse than Ridenton was. Ridenton's one mistake was to not get up quick enough, thus playing Smeltz onside for the second goal.

Roley's, Gorrin's and Alberts defensive efforts were often nondescript or worse, especially in our own box.

It looked to me like Lia was our best player FFS.

We cant blame the lack of All Whites for that lot being shark

That's looks to be over the top to me. Ridiculous

didn't seem like much in it, still a retaliation. Unfortunate for Sydney, hopefully works in our favour. TBH out of character for Smeltzy I think, probably more because he is good mates with Siggie and the rest and doesn't like losing out.

All these nightshifts, I've just woken up. Had this bad dream that NZ teams got beaten by Aussie teams regardless of the code. It was a dream wasn't it? I'll check my recording of the game to confirm.

Be interesting if as many Sydney fans will be back on their next trip. It did look good to see so many at the other end of the ground. And yes, the piss take was funny. As a certainAussie captain said, we're just too nice. Next time I hope we do beat them and then we can sing "You're not singing any more...."

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

it was barely worse than durante who missed the tackle and then took another shot at the attacker

What the hell was that? I know that we played like rubbish but that was Phoenix of old rubbish. Its an international window and all but you do not throw in Ridenton, who was coming back from injury and out of position in there (or a rookie as an alternative) and you don't make that tackle on a player going back towards his own goal closer to half way to get sent off.... Granted those points alone did not decide the game but the RB scenario was huge for that game as an episode within it and what it does to Ridenton mentally and Rieras send off is huge for next week.

Playing anyone not named Lia at RB - I kinda said earlier in the week that it would be just completely brainless to bring in anyone other than Lia. I am surprised Ernie thought that would have worked out any other way than it did. Why Riera made that tackle like that, its a team killer. Its schoolboy stuff. There was no danger there. There was no need to make it. I just scream out "WHY?!?!"

I don't think there needs to be much of a post mortem on this considering the players that were out, will now be out and whom are coming back. Its more looking forward and playing Victory without a DM....

Always feel you should keep the young guys in their position and shift the experienced player

It's a pity Riera didn't get subbed after the first yellow when game was gone

Good to see Ernie appreciated he got the game wrong v Arnold

It makes me even more confident in the guy that he;

a) is happy to acknowledge that he got it wrong and

b) did spot the issue and sees a way forward

"

Despite having to field a depleted lineup against Sydney, Merrick took the heat off his players and castigated himself for being outwitted by rival coach Graham Arnold.

"Structurally we weren't prepared to play against the formation that Sydney play. And I blame myself for that, I don't think anyone had a good game and I don't think I prepared the boys as well as I should have.

"That gives me the chance to re-evaluate and try out different players in different positions. To the point where, if we need to, in the finals, we've got other options."
