I liked the way Rudan didn't wait to make subs and went for it quickly after half time bringing on attacking players. If we had of got an early goal I think it could have been a very different outcome.
Real shame Williams kept blazing it over the cross bar. Especially that one that Sheridan laid on a plate for him. Hero one week villan the next.
Might be a good wake-up call for the boys. No game is easy in this comp. So expecting / hoping for a real response this week against Roar.
Sheridan should've shot to be fair; if that was Roy, it's in the back of the net.
It wasn't an open goal, considering the position of both himself and Williams he may have thought Williams was in a better position.
He had a very good look at the goal on his second touch, and chose not to shoot but take himself further wide. A confident striker would have scored there.
Yeah, and there was a defender blocking a fairly narrow angle.
If you watch the replay from the behind goal camera, it's very clear that the defender is arriving quite late, i.e. there's a very wide angle to work with if he shoots immediately with his second touch.
I am thinking of that exact camera angle. It does show the defender coming into view to block the angle.
If he shoots and misses or the defender saves, would he be being criticised for not playing in Williams who was in a better position?
If Williams scores (from a better angle too) would there be some praising Sheridan's awareness, astute summation of the situation, to improve the likelihood of a goal?
Well, that's all counter-factual, so we'll never know. My view is - you're a forward, you have a very good look at goal, and plenty of room to put the ball in with, at worst, just one player to beat. Taking another touch, and playing it back to Williams means he gets the ball with at least three players between him and the goal, all of whom have time to react because of Sheridan's movement away from goal, so you're giving up an excellent chance at professional level (i.e. one you score in 9 out of 10 times) for a decent one, where maybe you score 5 out of 10 times, if that.
Either way, don't think it really matters in the context of the game, but I think it's probably a micro-example of why Sheridan starts games on the bench.
