In reply to getting behind early...

I agree. I prefer getting on top or in front first

That's what she said.

Two things re game:

1. Everyone was remarking about what a good game it was with both sides playing football (would agree with Dewhurst, and certainly the most tense and enjoyable game I've seen for a while).

2. Lots of frustration in the stands about Fenton in the first half.

Stats are a bit more skewed towards Roar than i thought during the game, but overall a very even contest: http://www.wellingtonphoenix.com/article/ernie-mer...

Plus: "The Phoenix had beaten the Roar only four times in 24 matches going into Saturday’s game, with two of those victories coming last season".

Well that was an awesome night. The croud size was obviously disappointing but you can really notice the different atmosphere when everyone knows they don't have to go to work the next day. Enjoyed knocking back Hapi Dazes too, is that gonna to be a permanent thing now?

Fenton has been poor. When Durante is back I wonder if Manny will go to right back and Doyle will keep the left back spot.

why would u change Manny from where he is?  If he goes to right back then he is forced to go forward and I think he is over that.  Let Dura fight for spot and solve Fentons attacking problem quick.

Because Manny isn't a centre back and Dura is? Manny hasn't done as bad as people might have feared but he still hasn't been great. I honestly think that we wouldn't have conceded as many goals as we have if Dura had been fit. As for Fenton's issues, how do you solve them? Tell him to stop being crap? I don't think that he's contributed anything going forward this year so you wouldn't lose anything by putting Manny there, and Manny is better defensively.

So wtf is up with Fenton? Perhaps Ernie reckons he won't get any better sitting on the bench?

Some of his passes into the box, where he cut inside, were rather ordinary / pedestrian.

He was actually solid in the defence considering he shies away from a tackle that Manny or Siggy would relish.

I thought Riera had a superb game and the midfield truly delivered today - we did not let Roar overrun us in the middle.

re: Fenton no he wasn't he was poor defensively as well as going forward.

OK then. Take Two: "He was better in defence than he was in attack"

My own observation on Fenton is that he is a good player that has grown fearful of getting injured in a tackle and loses his composure under perceived or anticipated pressure as a result.  Either the past problems with his body affect his head, or the physical problems (shoulder on each side) have not been fully resolved. Either way it is showing in his on-field performance, and in his facial expressions.

checking out  the  replay, Doyle and Fenton had more than enough chances to create goals from crosses, but their delivery was poor for the most part. Playing as narrow as we do, thess two could kill games for us.

Was that penalty at the beginning of the match? Could not see, I think it was Sarpong going down.

Sack of bricks.

There's no way that was a penalty.

He feel down reasonably easily; but mostly because he doesn't seem like he's very strong. He did get bundled off it off the ball - have seen them given.

There was one in the 2nd half that was worse though - believe it was North (?) who bundled one of our guys off with an elbow to the face.

Great result, with two wins out of three.

Have to say I'm not getting exicited as we have another 24 games to go. Of  next five games, we have four away with MV, Sydney and WSW.

If we are still up there after these then I will probably have a smirk on my face.

would be massive to come away from those games with a few good results.

Such an enjoyable game from the zone!! Favourite moment probably singing jokingly that we'd scored when the ref bought the quick free kick back before Wee Macs goal, only for him to then slot it before we'd finished the song!

I can't remember enjoying a game as much as last night's - a sentiment shared by all around me. The standard of football we played was superb - not just in patches but for the majority of the game.

Saprong is going to be something special when he gets up to race pace.

Ernie rules !!!!!!!

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

That's the one Patrick. Can you tell my name sake from Napier the definition of fiction verses non fiction? As he is a little confused regarding Wynne's eligibility for NZ under the FIFA regulations.

Nice little scene before the game, someone had to show Durante where he had to go from the field to the his box to watch the game. Maybe his first Phoenix home game he watch from the stands.

Pity too, cause his parents were over for his daughters b'day, so they missed seeing him play

Great night in Welly. Great football, beers and an Ifill Burger at the BB, heaps of fun at Bethel Woods, cheering the lads when they came in, Siggy's speech...

We had 61% possession. Impressive.

Someone has it wrong. Here it says Roar with 61% (look in general play box in Opta stats):

http://www.a-league.com.au/article/john-aloisi-rue...

I was at the game and thought we had more possession but I had consumed many Hapi Daze so very likely I am wrong.

Seems I got it wrong, I think I saw the 61% number and assumed it was for us. I don't remember that being them having that much possession, if I had guessed I would've thought reasonably even, slightly more to us. Maybe I just liked our possession more!

They definitely had more possession - dominated it, especially for a period at the start of the 2nd. We did more with it though.

As others have said, extremely enjoyable game to watch. I was pretty disheartened that it could be another longgg year after the jets match but it's good to see that was probably an off game, rather than a glimpse of what to expect for the season. :)

The timing of all this couldn't be much worse either. A few days after a good win at home, with our next home game not for almost three weeks.

I hate this.
