I predict a podcast of self-flagellatory gloom this week. Angstsplosion magnitude 9.

The verdict on Stein should be interesting. The comparison of quality between the Nix and Heart even more so.

Merrick's subbing is often baffling. It has completely killed off the last few games. I also am confused, Perth were full of back up players and for the most part they managed to string passes together. What is our excuse?

Not watched it tonight as at work, buit have you seen the options he has on the bench when we have a few yellows or injuries? Some kid who would be in the reserves in other teams and Bertos as replacment attackers?

Total lack of investment.

I meant more from our starting team, our passing often looks panicked extremely risky at the best of times. I didn't think we would be in worse shape than we are last year.

Take the 4th goal out of it and I thought 3-2 to them would have reflected the game okay. They were better. God it hurts to say that, cos they are missing half their team and are generally horseshit. And they have a lunatic keeper.

They looked sharp and energetic. And Alistair Edwards is no fool. Worked at AIS for years. I remember him as a player - not flash but solid.
He seems to have improved on what the previous coach left at Perth Glory. We are in the same predicament but at an earlier stage (Merrick only had 1/2 season so far).

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Same old problem. We're 2 quality midfielders short. Hick's out of his depth completely. Too much to expect the real young potential talents, Ridenton and Rufer to solve that issue yet.

My exact thoughts, at least let him know we want him in January so he doesn't get a new contract somewhere. At this point I'd be happy with just signing Chris James, we need something.

We scored some nice goals tonight. Perhaps deserved to get something out of the game...

There is no depth in this team. And with so many inexperienced youngsters our AW's just can't afford to stuff up on top of that.

I don't know what to say anymore to be honest. Feels like it's all been said anyway. We're just going in circles...

I agree some players might need to go.

But this team is just not clicking...

On a day where our strikers score a couple of goals our defence opens the front door...

And when we're tight at the back our attack is poor.

Well that's it. Expect nothing from this season. Bottom line:

This NiX team is a step behind every other team and with too many weaknesses all across the board.

If we can get a win somewhere, perhaps some confidence will bring change.

But yeah I don't wana be in that dressing room right now...

You can't afford to get torn apart on the flanks like that...

We need a decent RB asap!!

Fenton is way better up front.

The amount of times he's cost us goals... Just can't happen

A shame about Fenton. After his standout game last week when he kept Bridge and Minniecon quiet he was all at sea tonight. It wasn't just the fact that he couldn't cope with the pressure that was deliberately put on him all game (his bad luck that he was marking the best player on the park) but his passing and general decision making was terribly poor.

Didn't help that there was almost no midfield cover. It was like last season all over again watching Sidnei and co wander through the vast unpopulated acreage of our midfield.

We are pants. By the end of the game it was embarrassing. It feels like the team is a mess atm. There are so many things that need fixing that it's difficult to know where to start. I still have faith in Merrick but it's getting frustrating to watch us play because we should be doing better than this.

Should make for an interesting crowd next week.

Makes you wonder about the Roar game next week.

Fact is over 90 min Perth were by far the better side. Sharp passing, and pace just killed us plus the two AW defenders were poor and Moss making that horror gaff  did not help.

We were running out of puff towards the end but I think the three subs were the catalyst for our implosion.
Reira was lucky to have been subbed, he should have had two yellows (and he was just as reckless last week).

We are not fast enough, nor sharp enough, basically all over the pitch. Every team in the league looks ahead of us in almost every area if the team.

You can argue that Heart are worse all you want, but even that's debatable.

If we don't win next week the crowd on 22 Dec will be about 3000.

Well I gave up 3 hours of sleep and had to get up again at 5:15am to come to work. The game was reasonably good to watch except the shit passing, the lack  of someone pulling the trigger in front of their goal - and when we did, we scored two great goals.

We should not have lost that game and sorry to say IMHO our back four defence was shit for the last 30 mins. At sixes and 7's all the time. Fenton could be a good fullback but he's been left out to dry by a midfield that isn't there far too often. Siggy & Durante were not playing their best. and I think Manny has now found out that he's our best Left Back option. But who do we replace Riera with?

Very disappointed we didn't beat them. Moss pulled off a few excellent saves in there and then went and did a Robert Green for their last.

Still, the team are playing a lot more attractive type football when their passes actually go to our players. I'd rather watch this than hoofball any day.

Sorry if this ramblimg doesn't make sense. 3 hours sleep and I'm knackered and still working.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I agree but we are not going to be able to change a lot this season as we don't have they type of players we need. Ernie can only do so much with the players he has got. Will need to to get 4/5 players for next season.

Still not got around to watching it today and unlikely as we got a few household issues going on. From what folk are saying a bit like last week when we lost our shape due to the subs.

Also highlights just how important it is to keep discipline and not get players suspended.

Fenton wasn't that bad. His was a commentators performance, defined by the no of times the commentators kept saying he's had a really tough night (which they had obviously predetermined on the basis that he would have a hard time marking Sidney). He had a couple of bad touches, one chest in particular, but actually that guy Sidney didn't get round him or expose him.

Who still thinks ifill should only be allowed to start on the bench?

@FT. Not really sure you could say we list shape due to subs. That would imply we had shape at some point before that.

We didn't lose the game because of Fenton. Feel sorry for Ifill. Gave it heaps and is in a different league when he plays like that. Has the passion, guts and commitment to this club that many others didn't show last night when it counted. However, as many of us are agreed on, you can't do well in the A League without having A league standard midfielders. Not when you're playing the way we do now. And we'll get exposed even more soon. That last 25 mins is the worst I've ever seem them respond to a winning position in the game.

Agree we did not loose because of Fenton, but he gave away a lot more than 3 possessions.  I'd say closer to ten.  A lot of balls into Riera that either went to Perth or put Riera under pressure, plus a few lost at the top end as well.
Riera is a solid at best player, Caira is ineffective as an outlet and Fenton has Kenny in front of him who is hard to find.  With Lia seeming to play higher this game and Sig and Dura holding, Riera did not have a lot of help.  And when we were up 2-1 we still seemed to play Lia high, with only Ridenton deeper, and Ridenton he did not seem to really grasp that screening role.  We were a big hole in the middle.  Particularly with Manny's indiscipline we are so much still missing that DM and at least one more quality FB.  If we had signed a notable DM and had Manny playing LFB this could be quite a different side.
These kids coming on with no youth league games is an absolute killer, but it also seemed Ernie was wanting to keep play attacking and did not plug the hole at back mid?
But agree Sidnei did not cut up Louis like he did in Chch.

My 2 cents worth:

1. lack of pace, major concern for a while now, but last night we were struggling to kept up with there young guys. To many players going missing for long periods of games, and from watching on TV, poor options when passing( or no options to pass) and players not looking around for runners, choosing to pass sideways or backwards or to a player well marked.

2. Need to get a team into the NYL (prob won't happen due to cost), so our reserves and youth can play against decent opponents. Perth newbies didn't look out of place in the HAL

3.Feel Welnix need to splash some cash in the short term until our promising youth are ready for the HAL or risk having no-one turning up to watch games wherever city they are played in.

4. Is it hard to attract quality players to Wellington? Maybe our budget is to tight or the lifestyle and weather is not appealing. So we end up with no-names or our 3rd or 4th whatever choice.

Some good patches(again), but at 2-1, thought would have been a good time to sit back and catch them on the counter. Most of second half seemed to be no-one in midfield. maybe the heat and travel was a factor but as we do this trip every season, you think it could have been sorted by now.

Not a bad game to watch if I wasn't a nix supporter.
