Usually I am relatively positive and do like to see the good in a match / player, but the game on Friday was dire JV. Honestly we just seemed to totally forget how to play football. We probably had an ok 20 minute spell and it was ok in that we scored twice and they did not.

Obviously the Travel to Perth coupled with effectively playing football from Midnight to 2:00am certainly does not help.

I have thought about it a lot over the weekend and I think it  is just one of those "draw a line under it and forget about it" kind of games.

If the club wanted to ever raise a point of order about anything, that one would be my choice.

Of course it is tough to travel from Welly to Perth (or back) for a football game, as it is quite far away. However, once we get there, it does not have to be a Friday Night feature ("a Midnight Special"?). It could have a been a Sat or Sun afternoon game and it may have been less of a drama for us. I thought that part of the team management is ensuring players have a curfew - they were all well past their bedtime last friday.
I totally agree.
The FFA can't seem to get Perth right in terms of timing of games. We get one that is far too late, they have previously copped flak for scheduling games to early in the afternoon when the temperature easily exceeds 30 degrees.

so this shows me the number of passes and direction, right? 52 passes, 5.8% were long 80.8% success rate. Which means 10 passes were inaccurate. The 10 passes that went away from uis are what concerns me but I guess I'll have to concede he looked worse than he actually was.

The attacking stats are more scary

I think Lia is playing better, but he's getting too far forward and making the team play worse overall. Perth ran through our midfield like it wasn't even there. I think part of that was due to Lia getting caught too far up the pitch.

He made more tackles than any other 'Nix player, equal highest number of interceptions, he was 4th best in clearance behind 3 defenders, he won 90% of his duels - better than any other 'Nix player (100% of his aerial duels), he had 5 shooting assists, again more than any other 'Nix player. 2 of his 3 crosses were successful, only Brockie was the other Nix player to have a successful cross (from his 1 attempt), 4th best passing accuracy in the team (including subs) and didn't concede a single foul and won 2 - compare that to Riera who conceded 5 fouls (IIRC one that lead to Perth's equaliser). I would say his best performance of the season.

Just shows that people really look hard for the bad things a player does (and notes them) when they have a pre conceived opinion about a that player. Scapegoat theory etc. In the case of Lia, he might give the ball away a couple of times in a game (less than usual) but people will be frustrated a lot more when he does it because he's been the worst offender in previous games. It's understandable in a way but I saw a lot of things he did well against Perth and I found that easy to see because there were a lot of other players that were having shockers.

Fuck this stupid game

There was an interesting study that came out about a year ago which documented that for a majority of average educated people we tend to immediately accept facts/findings/data which agree with our preconceived ideas (or cultural norms, or religion or whatever), but that we tend to question, discount or disbelieve/ignore those which plainly contradict these preconceived ideas (even if the findings/data are correct).

The study was originally based on research related to global warming, but applies equally to Vince Lia, methinks, as he's been blowing hot and cold lately.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

how on earth did you get 5 shooting assists - we din't score that many. Or are you looking at the stats for the season?

The most telling stat there for me is the 5 shooting assists. Don't get me wrong, those are stats are great and I thought he had a solid game ... but if you're defensive midfielder is providing 5 shooting assists I'd say he's too high up the field. Maybe the alternative is to play Manny as a defensive mid and let Lia play as a box to box midfielder?

Yeah, I just had a look at the A League website to check this game's stats and Lia had a great game, contributing greatly in all facets of the game.

Including diverting the ball into the path of a Perth player to score their 3rd goal. but otherwise he played reasonably well. Got a great motor on him and he'll run all day. I like Lia for that but no more headers and no more shooting ok?

Riera got hung out to dry v Perth

no Manny, Lia up at the front, our aging attacking force largely watching from a distance, two FBs that were struggling and McGarry and a bunch of fast 19 year old kids to handle, plus Sidnei cutting inside often enough

You mean that last ditch tackle that stopped McGary going through 1 on 1 with the 'keeper.

What's the golden rule that you never do in your own penalty area?

Let a player run through and have a shot unopposed against a goalkeeper from 7 yards out

player should never have got there in the first place, but if he does giving away a penalty is not the idea.

Agree. It was unlucky that it happened to fall to their player.
