I say possibly because I don't want to make it foregone conclusion.
Just wanted to get a general idea of the reaction to the news.
If you have some significantly different reaction leave a comment and I'll add another choice (if I can?).asmodeus_822012-02-15 12:51:05

He's served the club well, but could have served it so much better if Ricki would start him more and stop hooking him ahead of others who are performing less well...

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

he's had 5 assists this season, only one behind leader in goal assists Michael McGlinchy.  Play him more Ricki!  I would like flair and Dani, Daniel combo.

^^^ 5 assists this season with 6(?) Starts?
Thats kind of impressive considering I don't think he's played a full 90 all season, was left unused on the bench for several (5?) games.
I wouldn't be opposed to including a guaranteed game time clause in his contract assuming that that is the problem and not the bottom line.

Still not sure just why some of you carry on about him.Yep he has done some good things but no more than others. To me a player who hasnt performed to all the hype some of you give him.

Great to have assists but they mean buggar all if the rest of the play isnt really up to it.

Except that for the 5 or so games he started over Christmas he did all the things he is accused of not doing.  he worked hard, he tackled (not alwys successfully - but most of our midfield can be accused of that), tracked back, put in dangerous crossed, took great set-pieces, ran at players and created chances.

His reward?  To be dropped for Nick Ward.

Certainly at times over the last few years questions could be asked but he showed he could really add to our play for those games and he got lopped.  Incredibly harsh in my view.

harsh in my view too. However I think the club's stance is probably reasonable to drop his wages, so leaving may be the best for all parties

Wow  5 games, could it be he saw what may be coming. That should be sometimes tracked back, sometimes put in a dangerous cross, sometimes took a great set piece, yep ran at players but sadly not as successfully as many choose to remember. ballane2012-02-15 17:43:24

Enough that he got 4 firsts and a 2nd in MOTM voting on here, so what was fresh in people's minds is that in a period where we had 4-2 and 5-2 wins he was more key to those wins than anyone else.

You can't ask for more than that.

What Hard News says... I am still astounded he didn't get to keep his starting position. It's the best I have ever seen him play. He was our heartbeat.

But why was absent so long in the 2nd season? I doubt it was politics if he was a T S favourite. Was he ill? as no mention of injury as I can remember. I know he did have an injury spell in 3rd pre-season

My theory with Daniel (and flair players in general) is they will struggle in isolation of players of similar style i.e players who can anticipate / make runs, play quick one touches etc.

I thought Daniel was very good in season one, particularly in combination with Filipe, but was generally average, with moments of class interspersed, over the following seasons.

This season I think he has been close to season one form and has added significantly to performances and results. I wonder how much that is due to having Sanchez as a midfield partner i.e. another flair player.

I also agree he has significantly upped his defensive contribution this season.

I don't think it's unfair to say he no longer has the legs for 90 minutes nor the pace he had a few seasons ago so, going forward, his role would be off the bench. A role he has performed very well this season.

I do agree he has been hard done by in not being selected ahead of Ward who has been a huge disappointment - even when measured against tempered expectations.

I guess the club have offered Daniel a salary they think is fair for the role they see he may play going forward and Daniel is assessing his options. Quite reasonable approaches for both parties.

Whatever the outcome I wish Daniel the best - he has been a credit to the club and his popularity with fans, especially younger ones, is well deserved.

Dont get me wrong i have enjoyed his contribution to the Phoenix. But i dont think he has delivered as much as we could have hoped for. While he may be up there with assists this season, like many of our team their delivery at times is not good at all and its often not there at all.

Agree with WB he has often played his best when played with a like minded player and this also seemed to help Locheads game.

Still dont understand why after playing well at home in a good win he was then dropped for the next away game which we bloody lost, and since then has struggled to get back in.

As for MOTM voting on here your not seriously trying say thats an indicator,if anything thats a piss take most of time.

MOTM poll may be very informal but it attracts a good spread of votes and generally speaking the winner is a fair reflection of the best player on the day. Sure there are the usual comedy votes but they are a minority and in 5 seasons I have seen few poll winners that I thought were totally unrealistic.

Contrast that with the Fox Sport MOTM system where regularly the most ludicrous selections are made by so-called experts, often based on obvious bias, eg, Slater continually picking Kewell after yet another of his underwhelming performances.

I really enjoyed his play this season and would've preferred to have greenacre benched in favour of him recently. Whitby boy's post makes a lot of sense and a lot of people have felt that daniel/dani together produces more than the sum of their parts

no slag on greenacre, and we would miss his running, i just like the idea of sanchez centrally, daniel/leo on the flanks and ifill up top. Classy attacking quartet that would be...

sad to see him go if he does, really wish he'd hang around. Doesn't he have some sort of academy here? Have welnix/ricki considered supplementing his playing income with some sort of coaching/advisory role in the academy they are proposing for the nix? His touch and delivery are something i'd love to see replicated in our young new zealand players coming through...

Daniel explores options
Wednesday, 15 February 2012 10:10 PM

Daniel's future at the Wellington Phoenix is unclear after he was given time to fly to Singapore to explore an offer.

The likeable Brazilian has been used mainly as a substitute by coach Ricki Herbert during the past two seasons.

So far this campaign he has made eight starts in 18 matches and Herbert confirmed on Wednesday the club had yet to put an offer in front of the 32-year-old midfielder.

"We haven't made a lot of players offers yet," added Herbert. "Our heads have been firmly concentrating on the finals series.

"Whilst players are probably looking for a bit more certainty and longevity in their careers it will probably be a couple of weeks until we get closer to something new."

Daniel signed with the Phoenix in 2007 and brought up his 100th match for the club against Newcastle Jets in January.

He was granted leave earlier this week to go to Singapore but will be part of Herbert's extended squad that leaves Wellington on Thursday for matches against Central Coast Mariners and Sydney FC.

"Daniel has got his family to consider. He's got his future to consider, whether that's a year or two years in professional football," said Herbert.

"Whilst the Phoenix has been his home for a long period of time it's important that he is happy and he's making the right decisions.

"We've given him three days now to clear his head and see what he feels himself. Then we can make a call."

Now I'm confused. Is it the case that we made him an offer which he turned down? Or was that just wild speculation and rumor?
If it is the case we haven't made him an offer why not?!
Heard some pretty terrible things about Singapore football...

wtf, Last I was hearing Daniel was loving the club and obviously performing on the park by providing the assists. I'd be keeping him on, Bertos taking set pieces makes me cry.

Yep. Daniel's set pieces may have only rattled the crossbar in his last few attempts, but at least he can get it past the first defender.

seems odd that he hasn't been offered a contract - he clearly loves being here and would easily be one of the favourites in the team for the fans. Would be sad to see him leave.....but if he wants more gametime then i guess he may have to look elsewhere - Ricki seems determined to have him on the bench - wrongly for mine

If Daniel re-signs his role will be as a squad / bench player - that is not a criticism of Daniel but simply reflects the fact he does not have the legs to last 90 minutes. His form the later part of this season has been good and certainly good enough to make the match day squad. I don't however agree he should be starting for two reasons;

If you start him you know you will have to substitute him when his legs give out and you are thereby significantly limiting your tactical / injury substitution options and

His pace is such that he will go better against tiring opposition.

I do qualify this view by saying when we are injury / suspension / player form (e.g. Bertos) affected there are times when starting him would make sense - that reflects our lack of depth which hopefully won't be a problem next season.

I think / hope the situation with Daniel shows the club is giving more thought than it has done in the past about how to most effectively use its salary budget.

Gareth has stated the full salary cap will be available but we will not be recruiting a marquee. Presumably Gareth & Ricki are going through what new key positional signings are required in the off season, what mandatory (i.e. youth) signings need to be made, who of the current squad not already signed they want to re-sign (and what their market value is), how much cap is already committed and therefore how much cap is available to fund re-signings and new key and mandatory signings.

Indications that have presumably been made to Daniel on his future role and salary, should he choose to re-sign, would be part of that process. Based on those indications Daniel is assessing his alternate options.

All very sensible and reasonable for both parties.

What will happen to 70 minute "Daniel time" if he starts? I'm not sure if it has the same impact if he's being subbed
Permalink Permalink
about 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I think Ricki leaves his subbing way too late. Doing it in the 60th minute would be better unless there is an injury. 75th min and later as he tends to do and the player involved wont have time to get into the swing of the game as such.
