YELLOW FEVER AND WELLINGTON PHOENIX JOINT MEDIA RELEASE

Fans' Phoenix scholarship offers unique opportunity

The successful partnership between fans and professionals that launched the career of Marco Rojas is set to continue under the new Wellington Phoenix owners Welnix, with the football club and the fan club announcing together today that the Retro Ricki Youth Scholarship will continue in season 2011/12.

2009 winner Marco Rojas, now a player for Melbourne Victory, is still grateful for the opportunity afforded to him by Yellow Fever fans:  "It's certainly something that helped me.  I was playing for Hamilton Wanderers at the Napier U19 tournament one minute, and then flying to Wellington for a trial the next.  It opened the door for me for sure."

The scholarship provides one player with a week-long trial at the Wellington Phoenix, with all expenses paid for by Yellow Fever fans.  "A lot of the Fever fans have played a bit, and we've even had a few international players like Andy Barron in the Fever Zone.  So the fans often know about the young players who are out there," says Yellow Fever founder Mike Greene.  "It's a chance for us to contribute in a bit of a different way.  We think this is the only sort of thing like this in the world, so it's pretty unique."

Wellington Phoenix CEO Nathan Greenham says the Phoenix are excited about the potential the scholarship has. Theres no doubt Yellow Fevers Youth Scholarship has the potential to find exciting talent wherever it may be in New Zealand. Were looking forward to seeing a worthy recipient again put forward this year.

Fever scouts will be on the sidelines over Labour Weekend's U19 tournament in Napier, and will then look for future stars in this summer's ASB Premiership and National Youth League.  Yellow Fever fans can also nominate players they know and rate via the fan club's website forums at www.yellowfever.co.nz.

Wellington Phoenix head coach Ricki Herbert and Fever scouts will discuss a shortlist before making an offer to one lucky youngster.

The scholarship winner's trial is likely to be in December of 2011.

Is there going to be any gender discrimination again?

Is it worth talent like Renee Leota even being nominated?

Female players have made the finalists before...and once we have a W-League team the sky will be the limit.

Why would you vote for a girl when she has no chance of being signed by the Phoenix?
This has been my view of previous youth scholarships:
But more to the point, the point of the scholarship (as I understand it) is to give a young promising player an opportunity to spend a week in a professional football environment, rather than serve as a trial for the Nix. That's pretty much why girls have been nominated over the past couple of years.

I mean, if the Nix depended on YF to do scouting for them, then it wouldn't be a well-run professional club, would it? It's not like the Marco Rojas situation is going to happen every year...

However it seems that this year may be more focused on a trial situation, not sure if that has always been the wording
The scholarship provides one player with a week-long trial at the Wellington Phoenix, with all expenses paid for by Yellow Fever fans.

So again I ask
Well, is it possible in the future to split male and female and have one from each get a weeks training with the 'Nix?

Bullion, I'll ask you this question if you don't mind, because I think it is an obvious issue:

When women play against men - for example mixed indoor football - the men generally feel intimidated by the situation of playing a physical sport against women out of fear of hurting or embarrassing them. Therefore the male players hold back a touch and do the best they can to avoid contact with them. I know a lot of women don't want the lads to react that way but most naturally do. How do you expect the professional players of the Phoenix to deal with that situation at trainings? Sure if a girl gains the scholarship she will be of a much higher talent than you average indoor footballer but I'm sure that won't change the way the Nix players feel about it.

Disclaimer: This is not a sexist opinion of mine, merely an observation and one I have discussed with other male footballers who have been in the same situation.

Fuck this stupid game

I think we have to be realistic and say this isn't open to women.

We care a lot about women's football, and have put money into it in years gone by. But this isn't the right opportunity for an aspiring female player.

So, with that line put in the sand, can we get back to nominating players.

Kthxbi.

Scott Tyson. Plays for Onslow Xl and has had trials with NZ U-17's. Absolute class player, centre mid and runs the full 90. Small but tenacious and committed. Is that all I need to say?

Ross McPhie - Nelson Suburbs - Scored for Nelson Suburbs on debut in their Chatham Cup victory over FC Nelson when he was just 14. Ross in still only 14 and was consistently the best performer for the Nelson Suburbs reserve side which plays in the Nelson Pine Industries first division, despite his age and height. Ross is a creative attacking midfielder. He is currently involved in NZ Football's NTC. Nelson Suburbs coach John Slotemaker said he is "lightyears" ahead of any other footballer of the same age in the region.

No one has put the age limit yet, so I'm guessing 14 is old enough.

An 11 year old and a 14 year old made the final nominations in previous years. I would think 14 could possible be old enough, just.

Good to draw a line in the sand. In future could add conditions to entry, such as must be eligible for Phoenix youth spot etc.Bullion2011-10-25 11:35:57

Vinnie and Manny would eat Ross alive.  Great player but maybe a couple of years from Scholarship?

Note: This isn't the official Fever word, merely my view.  Seeing as Smithy runs this intiative and has Ross in the next Tornadoes side going to the US with him he knows him better than most anyway.

Erik Panzer - Garin College - Captain of Canterbury United U19 and one of five academy players in the Canterbury United senior squad.

Despite going to Garin College, which doesn't usually bother attempting qualification for secondary school nationals, Erik has been able to make a name for himself at centre back and in the middle of the park for Nelson Suburbs. Erik was a regular in the heart of defence this season and being Year 13, went over to the United States in lure of a scholarship earlier in the year.

Jack Hobson-McVeigh.

Named in the tournament team in Napier for the 3rd time in 4 years. Played in the U17 World Cup in 09. Had been training/trialing with the NZ North Island based U23 Olympic squad. Currently playing for TW i believe. Deserves his shot at a pro contract.

Three for me, and two for them.

But if he currently playing for Team Wellington does that not mean he is already had trainings with the Phoenix or is likely to throughout the season anyway?

I didn't nominate players who have already had that experience for two reasons. A) Ricki has already seen them and B) they have already had the opportunity to train with the only professional outfit in NZ.

Isn't the scholarship an opportunity to train with the Phoenix for a week? Then surely someone who has already trained with the Phoenix shouldn't be eligble/worth voting for. Do we see it as a trial for a player, or an opportunity to give someone the experience?

Not trying to take anything away from your selection, because how good was his goal at the World Cup!

I agree with this guy.
The way I see it (which yes, is probably quite different from how others see it) is an opportunity for a quality player, who still has heaps to learn and who has plenty of potential to go far in football (hopefully to a professional level) to develop themselves further as a player and give them a sense of what its like to train as a professional rather than a trial for the squad, which from some of the things said seems to be what people are thinking. Yes, Marco getting signed was very, very cool but this wont happen every time and I dont think its right to send the winner in hoping for a contract when (to me) its more about personal development, gathering further experience and knowledge of playing the game at a professional level.
I know that plenty of people will disagree, but thats where Im at, and no, not because I nominated Izaac and want him to win. If Im being honest there are other nominees that I think are more deserving and will benefit more that I will vote for.
Peace.

Hundreds of top class players get the opportunity to train with the Phoenix at some time or another, especially those in Wellington. Which theoretically is a trial in front of Ricki Herbet.

Just seems this scholarship has now become a better opportunity for those who haven't had that chance.

In the past I'd be screaming "Dakota Lucas is a great player, probably on the cusp of A-League." But it's not like Ricki doesn't already know his ability. Him training for another week doesn't do anything more for both parties, compared to giving it to an extremely talented kid from Timaru.KingRollo2011-10-29 14:31:01
