I did hear from people close to Sotuh Melbourne that a head coaching role really wasn't Coveny's sweet spot.

The positive I take out of the current shambles is there will be  a sort out in the next off season and there will be a much greater focus on recruitment than there has been in the past. My reservation is Herbert will have a conflict of interest - as Phoenix coach he may want to release Lochhead, Sigmund, and Paston (more due to his personal choice) but as All Whites coach he may want them playing regular football. Hopefully the owners will be making the final calls and will be seeking independent advice.

Agree with most of what you say WB however i would ask where you get your confidence from that there will be a decent effort made on recruitment i certainly havnt seen any comment out of Welnix that would cause much optimism in this regard. While their attempt to focus on local talent is to be commended if they think we will win the league taking this direction im afraid they are sadly mistaken. While we certainly have some nice talent coming it needs to be a constant production line and not the dribs and drabs we get at the moment. Can any of you honestly say that you think this is the way to go.My fear is that just as we get a team that is ready to produce the goods it will be stripped away as the younger players rightly choose to take their talents to better leagues, there by putting us back at square one again.

So do you all really want to win the league or are you happy that we play so called total football and in the process produce heaps of young talent that is very unlikely to stick around long term.

Me im buggared if im sure what i want, but am bloody sure of one thing i want and thats for the Ring of Fire to return to the fortress it once was and frankly i couldnt give a shit how its done.Just give us some blooody results and not total football bullshit that CANT be delivered.

I would have someone like Paul Temple or Ramon Tribulex rather than an Aussie coach nobody else wants.

I did say on twitter that Paul Temple was one who sprung to mind when was talking with Ryans Rovers. It'd be a kiwi, because that seems to be what WelNix would want. I have no problem with that either.
However given that, I think out of these candidates, an ideal situation would be to have whoever it is as an assistant under Ricki for a season or so first. That would mean Greenie loses his job, but he can always fall back on his other job as ernie if he wants to stick around the club.

Surely a new coach would want to feel they would break completely from the previous one, rather than being an apprentice- unless they aren't properly qualified, in which case we don't want them anyway? Or is this foolhardy?

Fair call that.

I guess my thinking that comes from a feeling that I don't think any of the NZ candidates are ready to be thrown straight into the job. having them as an assistant to begin with lessens the risk. Once Ricki is gone, he would be broken completely from the new coach anyway.

Though as I think it was TX who said, Ricki is still worth keeping around in some capacity. However I agree that he shouldn't be stepping on the new guys toes. Academys manager seems obvious, but apparently we've been advertising for that position.

Paul Temple? Is that a pisstake? You do know its a package deal and his boyfriend *cough* twin Jose comes along too..

Not enough skirt for him and the football is a bit (understatement) high for his talent.

Oh yeah, I forgot he only coaches the U17 girls team for the skirts. Sheesh, behave.
