Ricki Herbert resigns

Wouldn't say it makes me furious, Smeltz left for his own reasons and Marco went for what was best for him( at a time when the nix were having issue's).

If Ricki does take another job in aussie and does well, looking at the bigger picture is that not good for NZ football.

Only get pissed when they do well against the nix, not just those mentioned but any other former players, otherwise any kiwi who gets good press is doing a good job in opening doors for other Kiwis

I know that belongs to some random politician, but by god you are clutching at straws and scraping the bottom of a  barrel with this. Truly the worst idiom I've ever heard.

Paul Keating. But are you then arguing that Ricki could come back? I remember in 2010 arguing that Terry could come back and people told me off in... well, quite similar language to that which you use above.

not arguing anything just a terrible idiom. I mean people get omelettes but souffles?

Burgess in the Herald confirms that I was wrong... that Ricki did jump, although Welnix did nothing to try to stop him. Which then opens me up for a rant on how I've lost all respect for Ricki, who should have stuck out the rest of the season instead of leaving Greeny to carry the can. But I don't want to argue any more.

Anyway, I really doubt Ricki will be back, because a soufflé doesn't rise twice. However, it's not inconceivable that Adelaide might take him on, and if he leads Adelaide to the Toilet Seat, that might cause a few reflective grimaces around here.

Oh my god. You were wrong? How will you cope....?
Its quite well known you were wrong a few days ago.

So what will Herbert's next move be?

We already know that he will retain some sort of link with the Phoenix as Technical Advisor to the Board.

It was also mentioned in Podcast v49 that he might coach the NZ U20s at the U20 WC.

This little gem of info was also contained in the recent Dom Post story about Ramon Tribulietx:

"The Phoenix face A-League competition in the coaching hunt with Adelaide United also looking for a new boss.

Adelaide have formed a special selection committee including former Socceroos Craig Foster, Alex Tobin and John Perin, while board member Bruno Marveggio did not discount chasing Herbert.

"It may be too early to talk about Ricki Herbert," Marveggio told The Advertiser newspaper.

"But it's all coming together with the committee. Once we reach a decision on exactly what we want and it's approved, then we'll start talking about coaches."

I think most people on here will probably ROFL at the idea of Ricki coaching Adelaide but I reckon it's not that ridiculous. Familiarity breeds contempt so we tend to discount the fact that Ricki is actually a highly experienced and knowledgable A-League coach. He might have run out of ideas and inspiration at the Nix but put him in a new environment and who knows? If not Adelaide I reckon he will turn up at another A-league club within a few years, perhaps when he is well clear of the All Whites.

Also, it would not surprise me at all to see Ricki coaching the Phoenix again at some time in the future. He is still relatively young and will always have strong ties back to the Nix and the A-league. Some time away may be all that is needed.

There is no way Craig "Barcelona" Foster would pick Ricki.

From having spoken to Marco's Dad last season, (?), it wasn't any issues with Herbert, it was more to do with the Victory having much better training facilities thus improving his development and it being part of an overall plan to see Marco playing in either a European or South American league.

The fact that more people think he was sacked doesn't mean anything. He resigned.

Just because more people think he was sacked doesn't mean anything. He resigned.

Yeah. Reality isn't a democracy. If it was, we could all vote ourselves 26 hour days so we could get two hours lie-in in the morning.

Paul Keating made his comments ("Souffle does not raise twice") in mid eighties regarding the then opposition leader Andrew Peacock, who lost the election and was subsequently rolled by his own party in favour of John Howard. When a year or two later on it was reported that Peacock was preparing to challenge Howard (who was then inexperienced as an opposition leader, did not present himself well and made a few PR howlers) for a leadership reshuffle, Keating was asked if he was worried about a possible Peacock return. Keating was a master of acerbic wit, and summed up Peacock with that sentence, because the late Andrew Peacock was seen as more froth and bubble with a careful image than as a real politician with balls.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

I could harldy see Oscar Wilde,  Mark Twain or Voltaire thinking "bloody hell I'll slay 'em with this souffle gag, they'll be rolling in the aisles!" somehow. I suppose you had to be there.Context is everything.

In a nutshell I don't think Doloras's use of it was my cup of tea. In fact not my bread and butter at all.

How many YFers have applied for the job so far?

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Speaking from personal experience. One of the joys of coaching, at any level, is knowing that everyone who watches your team thinks they are a better coach than you are.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Not sure if this has been posted before... a nice tribute from Ross Aloisi.

Ricki leaving a lasting legacy

Certainly gives a slightly more sympathetic insight into some of the challenges faced by Ricki and the Phoenix from someone with first hand experience.
