Agreed. Unless it's Miron. In which case, SACK MIRON.

Er... they feel that Kosta never got a fair shake at the Nix? Not hard to divine.

Wow. He gave Kosta his start at both A-League and international level. I say now he should give them something to really bleat about.

Maybe like us they are Phoenix fans disappointed by how the season is looking?

As a matter of interest JD just where was Ricki supposed to get the cash from for him to get better signings.Dont think he has ever had the  money to go after much more than he has.Terry sure didnt have the cash and it seems as if Welnix arnt that keen on splashing out.

Still no excuse i suppose for not to have got some better players.Bloody hell the man is gone no need to all to stick the boot in.You have what you wanted that should be enough.

Finally listened to the Telfar radio segment. Mr. Smith, very well played sir. Sharp, accurate responses to ridiculous statements and good composure whilst being interrupted constantly. *tips hat*.

Just giving my assessment and justifying why I thought it was time to go which we are constantly asked to do around here.  Not putting the boot in and thought I was reasonably balanced .  Anyway, as Doloras says no more fights so that's my view and no-one has to like it.

Just giving my assessment and justifying why I thought it was time to go.  Not putting the boot in and thought I was reasonably balanced (although a little surprised by all of the numerous "thank you's" ringing out - his job was to coach the team and he was well paid for that).

So you don't say thanks when someone serves you food etc? You're paying them after all.
I suspect it's a sign of immense respect for Ricki.

Agreed. Telfer is a complete twat. Nothing like interviewing somebody to find out their opinions, when you can come at it with your own agenda and attempt a hatchet job. Stick to netball and golf, Mr Telfer.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I think one really important thing the Phoenix have to do is spin this is a good news story for the club.  Got to start talking about the future and get a message out there that the club is moving on and moving forward - this change has to change the story, if they don't capitalise on that they are more incompetent than we have thought.  Fine to let Ricki go out on the resignation note but the message has to be results weren't good enough, we're making changes because we want better results next year etc

Unfortunate for Ricki to lose his job but his time had well and truly come and we needed something to shake things up and move forward.  First time I've been excited about the Phoenix for some time.

If you look back to 09/10 season that was his peak and to be still living off that today isn't good enough.  Much is made of ending up a single game off the grand final but it has to be remembered that we only ended up with a home game against Newcastle due to their upset of Gold Coast the week before.  We've still never managed an away win in the finals.

We've been on a slow but steady downward trajectory since then.  I began to have doubts about him at the end of that season.  After the trip to the UK the previous winter bagged Ifill and Greenacre - still two of our best ever recruits - we chose to effectively stand still rather than push on with more qwuality overseas signings (despite the fact we'd only finished 4th on the regular season ladder).  Perhaps we believed the hype of a successful finals run?

That off season we signed Nick Ward, Musa, Toto, Pavlovic, Jade North, Vukovic and D-Mac - while losing McKain, Caceres and Kosta.  Clearly not enough to push on into the top 2 and in fact we began to go backwards with most of the recruits unable to make much of an impact.  Herbert began experimenting with 3 at the back (after using it as a defensive formation with the All Whites) early in the season unsure how to integrate three centre backs who were all expecting to be first choice - a problem never really dealt with.  What looked like being a disappointing season was saved by the emergence of Marco in the second half of the competition but we still finished 6 out of 11.

11/12 was overshadowed by off field issues but recruitment was still a problem.  The weakness of traditionally wealthy sides Melbourne Victory and Sydney, an excellent defensive record and key goals from Tim Brown and Ifill meant we made the finals but were well off the top sides Brisbane and Central Coast Mariners.  The football was at time turgid and despite results major concerns about the direction of the club on the pitch were beginning to emerge from a vocal minority of fans while crowds fell.

And then we have this season which has been done to death really.  Some good, some bad - his Phoenix reign will be memorable more for great moments rather than outright successes.  Herbert can take some credit for the re-establishment of professional football in New Zealand, but shouldn't be eulogised, players, owners, fans must share equally in that praise.  His lack of a legacy is a little troubling and he lacks a truly landmark achievement to go down as a Phoenix great.  Much depends now of course on the success of his replacement, and maybe his achievements will be subject to reassessment in the future.

However, managers will always come and go and the time is right.  I just hope the fan base can now leave him behind cleanly, move on and rally together in support of the new guy whoever he is.

Personally I am pleased Ricki has gone from the Nix, and gone now. There was no point in having him stay any longer. I don't think we were going to get any better in the next few games with him there. I doubt there was anything he hasn't already tried in his coaching with the team, and it hasnt been working well enough.

I acknowledge all the work in getting the Nix up and running, and to the peak he had a few seasons ago, well done for that.

There are times when moving on is good and it can also only be a good thing for the All Whites in the vital games ahead of us. When he retires from the All Whites after this stint I hope that NZF appoints a coach that isn't also actively managing a team in a high pressure job

This Reason is the guy that said ifill should be a holding midfielder right? And that a 4-2-3-1 is too defensive, so he then suggested a new line-up, laid out in the same 4-2-3-1 formation?

He also said that defenders can't be attacking managers, conveniently ignoring the likes of Arsene Wenger, Brendan Rodgers, Ange Postecoglou etc.

Telfer was ranting again this morning about how "how Rojas was offered a better deal by the Victory" and how he "had some bloke on yesterday trying to tell him that the FFA were giving money to Sydney". Also revealed he is a huge Gareth Morgan fan.

He s an extraordinarily, uninformed, annoying person

Actually, you could argue last season was our highest point. We got to 2nd in the ladder late in the season and had WDL record against Brisbane. We equalled our points tally and position for 09/10 but only after finishing with a DLL (in 11/12) while in 09/10 we finished with a WWW to get to the same points tally. 9 times during the 11/12 season we were averaging 1.5ppg or higher, we have only have managed to do that 5 times in all other season combined and never past round 3 in any other season, we were averaging 1.54ppg until rd26 last season. We also had our best winning streak during the 11/12 season. Last season we didn't have the panache and hype (part Phoenix part All Whites) that 09/10 had.

Reasonably successful. Tried to get me to say that the owners are spending no money on the Phoenix, and I countered by saying that while Hernandez isn't being paid millions, he still wouldn't have come cheap.

Damn, there is an around-in-circles quality to the argument. I think we ALL agree that the lads weren't motivated to play at their best. But based on Greenie's and Dura's interviews, and Iffy's tweets, I think that the players problem was NOT with Ricki but with Gareth/Welnix and their "change the style of play, you're a bunch of boring hoofballers" vibe. Frankie Mac and others dispute this on the basis of... er, they don't rate Ricki and are glad he's gone.

I think you're making way too much out of this. None of us will ever really know, but imo, Greenie & the players may have been a bit annoyed about GMs comments, and thought they were an unnecessary distraction / pain in the arse. But that's completely different to having a problem with all of the owners, their vision/direction for the club, or even GM himself. They may have just thought (like many of us) that GM just needed to shut up, and stop spouting crap in the media. And as has been reported widely, it was Ricki's decision to try to change the style of football, not Wellnixs, but admittedly GMs decision to spout it to the world in the middle of the season.
