2017/18 Transfer Speculation

I say we get Kiwi boys back in the Nix.

Then we could get rid of ... maybe Rufer, hopefully Watson

Umm? The two you mentioned we could get rid of are kiwi's?

When Rufer has played this year, he has held his own and warrants another contract in my opinion. The only regret they should have is giving Hamish Watson a 3 year deal. Just buy him out and shuffle him on. Its worth the cap him to move him on and get someone in there that has a clue about where the 2nd to last defender is...

I think one of those full backs has to be worth a punt.  Tuiloma has also received a downgraded deal plus he's not at MLS starter level - I think he would be an upgrade on McGLinchey and would be worth a look

WeeMac is a far better player than Tuiloma.

Tuiloma can play CB, that is a big plus given our defence issues. WeeMac isn't a #6, he needs to be up front. If we could get rid of Finkler and use that slot for Tuiloma, it would be a big upgrade for our squad.

Although I completely agree with your representation of his penchant for offsides I felt the need to FIFY :) :)

Thought this would get flagged, was more a point that there are much better Kiwi's out there that we could get but we won't because we don't sign Kiwi's anymore. I'm aware Watto and Rufer are Kiwi but they've been around the club for a while and aren't that useful compared to lots of other Kiwis overseas e.g. Colvey, Tuiloma, etc

Unintentional or not, I thought that was a pretty succinct summary of Watson's time in Wellington.

I agree with Vader, cash him out, take the financial hit and put him out to pasture.

In his minutes for the Nix and in the Handy Rufer has been very good from what I've seen. Was very impressive with his range of passing vs Southern. I'm not ready to write him off.

Not convinced that Tuiloma has shown enough recently to be called better than Ridenton.

Not always his biggest fan but agree that he was pretty impressive in the game on Saturday.

I did still think he was lazy off the ball, but he did always seem to have space. Not the sort of player to make a late run into the box though, and he showed a few weeks ago he can do a job at RB. He's cheap and Kiwi, would be stupid to dump him.

Yeah fair enough, probably has more potential in that position given he is a pretty impressive physical dude.  I think he's wasted in the USL

Oliver Bozanic released by Japanese club.

He wasn't great as a #8 at the Victory, his best seasons was as a left winger and sometimes #10 at CCM. Not sure he is what we need tbh & we have a full 23 man roster atm, so would have to release someone.

Watching the way Newy are playing this season and given how Ernie Merrick made Krishna into a top A-League player I wouldnt be surprised if the Jets make a play for getting Roy on their books for next season. I doubt they'll be able to keep Petratos, and Roy would be a brilliant replacement. Front three of Nabbout, O'Donovan and Krishna. Lethal. Hope like fudge it doesn't happen though

If we were to release certain players (ie. Finkler) would the cost of paying out his contract go towards the cap, hindering our ability to replace him in January? How does this work?

Anything you pay them is included in their cap hit, that includes payments to end their contracts. However Finkler was meant to be on marquee wages, so any payout to get rid of him would be outside the cap.

Tim Cahill's contract has been terminated with immediate effect, him in for Finkler wouldn't be bad at all. Judging by the article though he doesn't want to play in the A-League again

Scoring headed goals is not an area of our game that needs to be strengthened though.

Whatever you think of Cahill I think it's a pity not to see him to work out in the A-League - came back too late

But definitely poor value for money for the league

Seeing as he was born in Samoa you would hope he might want to settle down in our neck of woods.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

So, are we able to sign someone right away?
Do we have to wait till Jan?

What position do we want to use our Import slot on?

Clearly another DM or a more mobile CB. I guess the team had to pay out Gui so there won't be a lot of money in the kitty even though this will probably be a marquee as well it will probably only be an accounting one.

Yes, I think another deeper lying midfielder is key and mobility is essential.  Someone who can receive the ball because if we're going to play out from the back we have to have more options

If they were uncontracted on 16th October, they can be signed straight away otherwise they have to wait until the 3rd January.

need more 'cattle' in the midfield. lets go for a marquee holding mid.

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.
