With the Phoenix's playing tellent on the rise, do you think Jeremy Christie should join the ranks of Stephen Old and move on from the club? disco_mart2008-04-04 15:15:05

If we have a quality right-back to sign lined up, and if Lia does OK in that position in training and in pre-season, then yes.
If one of the above conditions doesn't eventuate, then keep him for another year.

Not this season. He is versatile, so is valuable. I could see in the future he may find it harder and harder to get game time if the standard keeps improving and he is not keeping up with the standard of play.

Unsure

No.  Need more kiwi's, and he's a good utility player (perfect for a short bench).

...and 'Plodder' is the best nickname ever.

He's a Kiwi that can play in various positions. Good enough reason to keep him (as a squad player).

Keep him on - good option for back or defensive midfeild utility/sub. Plus he's an AW that needs to be playing at this level

You've already helped pay two players out... DOubt you can afford a third without affecting next year's cap.

agree, Plodder does Ok, as you said a good utility player but can never see him in the regular starting 11 again.

I reckon we keep him, at least till his contract is done, he's played ok and as most have sadi here a quality squad player who can back up a number of positions.

Queenslander 3x a year.

No - he is a great utility, which important in a league where there is a salary cap and squad size is limited.

Allegedly

As long as he NEVER attempts to play right back again, I don't care either way.

No, for reasons already mentioned.

Why would you want to discard one of the Nix most versatile and most beneficial utility players?  Not only is he a pivotal player, he makes significant impact off the bench (when he is given the chance to get on the field) and is an exceptional role model for many young New Zealanders.  Let's be honest, if he was to be replaced, it would be by an Australian or someone from further abroad.  Not only are they the Wellington Phoenix, they are the New Zealand Phoenix.

I'm a 100% Jezza or 'Plodder' fan so I'm clearly 100% NO to discarding one of New Zealands finest football stars!

In a word. Yes.

Three for me, and two for them.

I just don't think he has quite hit the heights required at A-league level. Not hard-working enough to be a midfielder, not tough enough or positionally sound enough to be a defender. Im sure we could find a better player, particularly if we're talking 'utility' player. As a utility player, what has he really got....??

im not a big fan of dropping someone for dropping thems sake, if we can sign someone better then yes maybe let him go but at the moment i think he is of value to us. i agree to an extent with what christie#1 said, keeping as many new zealanders on the books can only be good for profile and fostering good will for the team

We make do with what we have, but at least this season we have the luxury of being able to sign players of higher quality than some we had last season due no doubt to time constraints.

Jeremy mate.  Look  - you're a professional footballer mate.  Please don't think your position in the team is so tenuous that you have to resort to pimping yourself on the interwebs. Really - it isn't becoming.

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

Not this year - I'd rather avoid affecting our salary cap but cutting someone who can serve as a utility squad player if needed.

He didn't impress me at all last season - frankly I think he is another Stephen Old - simply not good enough for the A-League. I know this is harsh but we can't afford passengers in the Phoenix - they take up a valuable squad place and use up salary cap.

Having said that Ricki sees him every day at training and if his call is to give him another season then Ok but, for me, he needs to up his game significantly.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

ever the critic. sigh..

the fact is 1. Christie is a utility player, we need these, he can play practically anywhere in midfield.
2. he is contracted still, and there is no need to break this contract, he's a good player to have.
also "we can't afford passengers" is completely irrelevant. Plodder can offer a geat deal still to this team, and is at a-league level, he's played in every year so far. the man has experience.

and also, yes he is no right back, but considering the situation he is in, he actually didn't do THAT bad in right back last year, sure he wasn't the greatest, but he was all we had, and he was the best RB we fielded. give the guy a break

We aren't manchester united not every player in our team is going to be of a high quality. So with that in mind i think we should keep Christie he's decent enough and he covers a few positions

You just made the case for letting him go - his performance was no better or worse in any other position either - reasonable at a number of positions but not really good enough at any.

Anyway let's see if he can raise his game this season.

Keep him, I didn't think he did too bad at right back and was getting better in that position as time went on. However our cb pairing continued to be poor and we had to go to three effectively making him a bench player.

With a better cb pair he also may be a better rb for us as he might get a little more direction as to when to push and drop in etc.

Always gave a 100% which i liked and only made one real ballls up that cost us a goal, but then again who didn't?
