Can I pick up on a comment made under another thread, and that's about people coming to Phoenix games wearing Arsenal, Liverpool and (ahem) QPR shirts etc?

We are a big enough club now that people should be wearing Phoenix colours.  I have no desire to wear my Chelsea shirt to a Phoenix game and all the Arseanl fans starting anti Spurs chants etc. is something we can do without.  It's just another form of cultural cringe.

Let's start a campaign to rid us of other clubs shirts at Phoenix games.  We should all be secure enough now in the knowledge that we don't have to be embarrassed about supporting a NZ team - so let's just do it.  Phoenix colours or nothing.

Im sure they would love to where a phoenix shirt, but unless you are a 12 yr old, you cant buy the shirts for love or money untill the next shipment arrives in Oct. UberGunner2007-09-24 07:02:04

I was discussing this before the game on the weekend. It is a little odd, although it was amusing seeing the gooner chant down the 8 year old in the Shevchenko shirt at the Backbencher.

Must have been a broad-shouldered 8 year old to fit Shevchenko on his shirt! I'd have thought Cole would have been a better bet

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I don't think wearing other club colors in the beginning is too much of a problem. there were 12k people at the game - the supply of phoenix shirts available to retailers was around 500 until October and retro Ricki's have sold about 1000, +50 backbencher YF tops, and assorted other home made phoenix gear. At least by wearing a club top of some description you are showing you are a football supporter. If you are at the game then it goes without saying you also support the phoenix. given enough time, the entire YF zone will be a sea of yellow and black, but until the supply of phoenix gear meets the demand, i don't see why people cant wear their Liverpool or Chelsea tops. It creates plenty of banter at the pub, and you can find other like minded people to celebrate/commiserate with about your teams performance on the weekend.

Perhaps with other EPL fans there might be banter - but plenty of us that go to the game don't give a flying fig jam roll about the EPL.

So if you saw a guy in Hib's top, you would give him sh*t for not wearing a phoenix  or YF top.?

There was a guy in a Hibs top at the BB for the Newcastle game - I was talking to him -  but didn't give him sh*t - but perhaps if I did see him again in a hibs top - I would suggest to him he might want to get a phoenix top or scarf.

If anyone was going to wear Hibs gear - it would be me, as I'm trying to drum up numbers for the NZ Hibs SC (I'm the NZ 'state' rep for Oz Hibs SC) - but I've worn my retro ricki shirt to every game since the Sydney game now

If you were at "New-Highbury" would YOU give sh*t to the Hibs or 'nix shirts?

Be what you like for six days a week - on match day you are Phoenix.

Wear yellow and black - can't afford an official shirt or they have run out?

Make yer own like Madhouse does!

I've been wearing my Berwick Rangers shirt at the games (it's yellow and black) but the wife has kindly bought me a Phoenix shirt for my birthday so I'll be ditching the Berwick top from now on.

Did prompt a few random questions from punters at the BB though - like "Why the f**k are you wearing that shirt you poor bugger?"

Thanks Ellandback - not often that Chelsea and Leeds agree but nail on the head.

I'm not suggesting everyone has to wear a Phoenix top (I don't), just that we're really not interested that you support Brechin City reserves or are so fashion conscious (and stupid) that you go straight out and buy the new Man Utd fourth strip.  Keep em at home.  I had Arsenal and QPR shirts in front of me on Sat and the urge to throw beer over them was incredibly overwhelming.  Frankly, if I supported a team that was sponsored by "Sellotape" I would definitely not be seen wearing that in public.

Why do you have to wear a "Football" jersey?

Phoenix colours are yellow and black. Surely everyone who does not have a replica or retro ricki has a yellow or black shirt in their wardrobe.

Only Phoenix supporters shirts of any description at games please. We are alll there to show our support for one team. Leave all other club loyalties at home. IMO ?

make your own shirts:

1) get plain black tshirt (or rub a piece of coal all over a white one until black)
2)  with a twink pen, write "Wellington Phoenix" on the back (and if you're hardcore, on the front go on)
3) let the twink dry
4)with a standard highlighter, colour in the dried twink, careful to get all of the white
5) if you want to really stand out from the crowd,  get a yellow ribbon, either one of your kids gymnastics ribbons or maybe dog obediance or being-able-to-swim-the-length-of-the-pool ribbon,
and stitch it onto the shoulder, using intermediate cross stitch like you learn at form 2
6) this step is crucial: lightly cover the shirt in glue (i recommend 'paste' type glue - if you don't have any, a flour and water mix works fine ) and sprinkle yellow glitter over the entire tshirt (warning: too much and you may look slightly like a paedophile)

go to the game! fit in and look fabulous!

You're quite right I would n't ever wear a Chelsea shirt ...............anywhere.

Seriously though, I'm waiting for the White "away" shirt to be available, I want one of those - Black to me is the colour of death, We should have a different home hersey - perhaps one like the Hurricanes or Watford or even black and gold/yellow stripes? Only an idea.

Not so seriously, the players recognise me now when wearing my hoops, they know I'm a genuine fan and not a glory hunter .

Im surprised there hasnt been others opposing the banning of EPL shirts. Totally agree, we are Phoenix supporters together, regardless of who we support in England, but the opportunity to wear EPL shirts in football circles is limited if you are no longer regularly involved with a club.
And what's more, lots of people come up to me in my Claret and Blue and say West Ham is their second favorite team, and shout me a beer, which is probably why the Arsenal, ManU & Chelsea fans arent to worried about not wearing their shirts.
At the game last week I had a Liverpool supporter behind me, (actually he could be Lonegunmen's brother) and the banter was good.
And also I want to be able to identify the Sheffield Utd guy when he comes at me!!.

It's a bit tiresome all these "rules" about what we should wear, sing, sit (or stand), think etc etc about the Phoenix.  If I want to wear my beloved mid-90's Man U replica shirt I will wear it.  I'm sure like lots of football fans I am reluctant to fork out $150 for a Phoenix shirt given they have only existed for 5 competitive games and given the history of their predecessors may only last a season or two.  Many EPL teams have, on the other hand, proud histories of achievement (okay, not Spurs), and their shirts can be worn knowing they will continue for many years to come.  If the Phoenix last a few more years, and do reasonably well (here's hoping), then we can retire the EPL shirts.  Until then I'll have to go to games sitting next to my workmate in his naff Liverpool jacket and, when summer comes, his obnoxious "Mascherano" shirt.

Oh. I did a wikipedia search on the colour to try and find some relevance, but decided it must have been an arbitrary tongue-in-cheek posting as I couldn't see anything that explained such an esoteric selection. Cricket ranks only marginally better than rugby for me.

Well said, that person

I thought that we were trying to get people going to these games and supporting the team.   To have some "fashion Police" giving people a bit of crap because they don't happen to be wearing a Phoenix shirt is trainspotting in the extreme.   If I was to turn up in my ManU shirt (a birthday present) and have some t**ser either abuse me because I wasn't wearing the correct shirt, or waste beer on me, would ensure that I wouldn't come back.   I think some of the Phoenix Phanatics should just step back a little and realise that their antics could put a lot of people off - the exact opposite reaction to what is required.

How many times have you 'suggested' this? And how many times have you been told it aint going to happen because of the Reebok template?

And I still don't understand people going to a game and wearing another teams shirt. It makes no sense and makes you look like you don't give a sh*t about the Nix - only the EPL.

Yeah, but we're not talking about the people we're trying to get along. We're talking about the Yellow Fever. If the Feverites can't get on board with showing support for the Nix, how do we expect to get people going to these games and supporting the team.
