Well with ESPN gaining English Premier League rights, and SKY looking to drop A-League, the world really is turning to sh!te.

On another note, there were times last year when they didn't show A-League matches in favour of something else crappy

TVNZ has I believe.

While I think Sky does have a lot of Rugby on its channels, and not enough football. Even though I don't even have Sky, I'm constantly round at mates houses for the live games so I think this applies to me.

We are all football people on this site, there are a lot of Rugby fans out there who couldn't give a toss about football, they just don't have a forum to congregate. I know heaps of people that, when, the conversation is sport, it is usually rugby, I try and drop in the Phoenix or All Whites but it doesn't usually last.

I enjoy watching Rugby, not as much as Football but I still love the All Blacks. But nonetheless, they had more than enough time for all the NPC, Super 14 and International tests to be screened live as well as most NRL around the A-League and EPL. I hate to think what they are going to fill in the spaces with. Darts ? Snooker ? While there are many rugby fans around, even they're not interested in NPC replays if they fill it with that.

Hope that made sense ...

Sky have no idea the number of football followers there are in this country, do they UberGunner?
For everyone of us that posts on here regularly there's another 500 football fans in the silent majority who could be voicing their displeasure or taking action if they knew what Sky may be intending.

I am sure that they look at the viewing figures.  If the A League games (not involving the Phoenix) are only being watched by LiverpoolFan1 and a couple of others, and the rugby replays are being watched by thousands it is obvious what they are going to screen.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

yeah but its like a gym membership. you subscribe to it but might not use it. They'll know about it from their members when they try and take away the sauna you occasionally use though

according to fifa we have 218557 recorded players + officials. then theres people like me who don't play etc I could say atleast 500000 people in NZ that are keen on football...

Minorities always have the biggest say do they not get that .

Good luck with that.

Doug Golightly is employed by Sky, from memory he produces the Sky Sports magazine.  Although he does have Elrick on which might make him sympatheticc.

Fair enough Frankie, but I guess it depends on how they arrive at those statistics.

If you've got numerous daily rugby viewing options, including...

a dedicated rugby channel that has to be subscribed to separately,
most major international matches,
Super15 and ANZC, plus every All Black game,
and several locally-sourced, rugby expert panel shows,
pre-match and post-match shows, the majority of which are broadcast at peak viewing times,  plus numerous replays
grass roots and historic match replays,
and huge sponsorship and advertising tie-ins to boot

Verses...

little local coverage and no locally sourced football shows
some All Whites coverage
some (not all)  live HAL matches, many delayed and played at non-peak, early morning times or week day slots (when most are sleeping or working)
occasional and random EPL excerpts,
"days-later" replays and highlights
ESPN with occasional Serie A, Spanish and scattered MLS Football and Soccernet.
no dedicated channel and
bugger-all sponsorship and marketing...

its guaranteed to be a self-perpetuating fact that more NZers will watch rugby!

Yes they do. It's called 'thesilverfern.co.nz'. It's supposed to be about all sport but its 95% rugby dominated. There are a handful of football supporters there. If you posted about this stuff there you would get a few 'poofball' insults and possibly someone complaining about how all 'sokkah' players are wussie divers.

The answer is money.
Sky need to make it and Football in NZ does not, at the moment attract the money that Rugby does. Petitions and well worded e-mails to the Sky big wig will be a good start; send me e-mail adresses and I can begin typing, albeit very slowly

I want this. I mean, seriously, I really do.

I love watching repeats of great games again and again and again, even if I already know the result.

Question though, do rugby channel subscribers have to also subscribe to Sky Sports? (or the Golf Channel, with a few other assorted sports thrown in).

I ask because I would imagine if they did do a football channel (please!), I would instantly sign on, but I don't want all the golf.

and tennis. yawn.

Sky wont create any more channels until the Optus D3 Satellite goes up later this year. And even then those new channels will only be viewable on a MySkyHDi (or in houses that don't have Multiroom but do have the Dual Facing LNB - that bit at the end of the Satellite Dish arm)

And Freeview is not a broadcaster, it is never going to be one either. Freeview is a platform to allow TVNZ, TV3, CUE and any other channel to broadcast on it. The option here is for Yellow Fever to start its own channel and broadcast on Freeview and charge Sky to carry it.

The head of Sky is an American who loves his golf. That is why you get every little tournament from around the world in HD when there could be better thing on.

Man it is going to suck not having any warmup to the NIx matches. Love the warriors, they have it so good. On a Sunday you get, The Footy Show (Usually live) Followed by the Sunday Roast. Folowed by the Toyota Cup (U22s) Folowed Gameday (Half an hour build up) Followed by the Warriors match. Then later on you get 40,20 (an hour review of the games) and then monday night WIth fox sports wrap up. Great Coverage.

Surely the nix deserve better than just the game.

I have little knowledge now of tv in NZ as we download or stream everything that we watch.  However I see that TVNZ has a sports channel on Freeview.  This would seem a good alternative to Sky for Phoenix and a league games if the "worst" happens and they decide the audience is just not big enough.  Things are changing in broadcasting all the time and for "vocal minority" sports like football a move away from Sky might be the best thing.

Scuttlebut from the TVNZ people ive spoken to is that sports channel is being scrapped.

F@@K. Just got sky two weeks ago specifically for the Phoenix/A league.  This better not be true.

I forgot to mention, the TVNZ Sports Extra channel on Freeview is being taken off the air by the end of the month i believe. This is so TVNZ can carry 4 different versions of TV1 with the only difference being the Adverts they broadcast.

its at the point where instead of paying for sky you can just have purchase a decent internet plan and then watch anything on the net considering most sport, tv and movies are on their if you know where to look,

After watching Graham Henry kissing Mils on the cheek on Prime time TV, I don't think the Rugby fans can point the finger any more. REAL Rugby die-hards, just dont do that sort of thing - or so we are blindly led to believe by the die hard fans
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Let's not forget the big problem here, guys.

If Sky stuffs with A-League coverage, then it could stuff the Nix. Not only kill the club, but kill pro-football  in this country for the forseeable future.

If the "Sky cutting back A-League coverage" rumour is playing on this forum, and it's true, then FFA will already know.

The Nix need to talk to FFA, urgently, if it hasn't already happened. Isn't the Nix A-League contract up for renewal at the end of next season? So timing is critical.

First priority is to find out what we're fighting before we can effectively fight back.

Great! Would have been nice if HN could have made that a bit more obvious.

I've only got so much emotional energy and was rather hoping to save most of it for the upcoming A-League season.

I'm well aware what a Jackanape is.

The only reason I'm not shopping my source is that they have a profile in the game that could be impacted.  They were concerned by these plans and asked that it be communicated to the New Zealand football fanbase.
