Sky changes

So... I'm hearing from sources that Sky have a new head of football who couldn't care less about football in this part of the world.

Rumour is they are hacking A-League coverage and having a shake-up of the commentary team for Phoenix matches.  Elrick and Harry gone, Dewhurst in, no pre-match build-up.  Already yanked highlights and any support for the local game.

Every chance they will trim the number of non-Phoenix games shown to fit in critical events like the 60th daily replay of Deaker on Sport, or reruns of a Rugby match from two months ago.

Cheers Sky.  You destroyed the Kingz and now you're lining up a swipe at building a knowledgable base on the A-League and the Phoenix.  I'm sure the FFA and those anti the Phoenix in Aus will be toasting your name as you help them achieve victory.

How long have sky got rights to the A-league?

When it is up I hope TVNZ get on the act and put in a bid, even just to give sky a bit of shake up.

That's utter crap god I hope it's not true,
they've been pretty good with A-league coverage the last 2 seasons I was hoping it would get better not worse

Gee I hope your source is wrong ... remember there are six bids on the table for the one spot up for grabs ... 3 in Western Sydney, The Gong, Canberra, & Tassie ... Meaning five have to miss out ...

This bit sounds a bit sh*t.  I think if they buy the A League rights they have the rights to show all games, and most of them are on late at night and don't intefere with any other live sport, plus they've got three channels to put it on.  Why would they not show the other A League games, they did last year.

This is not good news, but not surprising.

Possibly a prelude to a football channel where you are charged premium fee (a la Rugby Channel). There was a crafty move of holding back on non-NZ international rugby (Six Nations etc), which used to be on every-bugger Sky Sports prior to it suddenly re-appearing with stuff one didn't use to see (UK Club rugby, South African / Australian rugby chat shows ... pa-lease) on a new cost-you-more channel.

I smell a rat.

I know, I know, its serious!

Not really too fussed about the A-League games to be honest, i could count on the thumbs of one hand how many of those i have watched (and no I'm not from Gore, i have just the regulation one thumb per hand)

BUT, the Phoenix that's a different story, haven;t missed one and have even flown from Ch-Ch four times over the past two season to watch games.

I'll be pissed if they cut the coverage to that, they need at least two commentators surely...

I couldn't see SKY ever having a Football Channel, i don;t think there would be enough support for it.

I would guess they struggle with the Rugby Channel in terms of subscribers, and couldn't see a Football Channel getting many sign up.

Remember we are all Football tragics...

So do I take it Sky is still under the delusion that the only sport EVERY New Zealander cares about is Rugby?

THey have their own channel, Give football it's own channel. There's more games going on around the world than f**ken rugby ones at anyone one time. Repeat after repeat of Rugby games that are of no consequence should be soley on the Rugby Channel, yet we get them on two, sometime three of the sports channels. YAWN.

Dewhurt and Fred De Jong, imagine that as a commentating pairing?

I like Ngata, he makes some good inputs.

Just phoned sky to confirm this monstrous rumour. The woman could not even confirm that they will be showing ANY football. Bloody stupid considering its been on their TV adverts for august!

She said someone from programming will ring me asap to confirm whether they will be showing all a-league games, or just the phoenix games.

The sky phone number is 0800 759 759.

Ring and harass them......

... or perhaps someone can get in contact with said director of Sports and get the lowdown direct invite them to contribute or post it here so we know.

Alternatively, anyone got an email list of the Sky management and Directors here ?

Well with ESPN gaining English Premier League rights, and SKY looking to drop A-League, the world really is turning to sh!te.

On another note, there were times last year when they didn't show A-League matches in favour of something else crappy

f**k em. if its true, i can think of a lot of people looking at broadband option for in venue entertaintment (pubs & clubs). commercial venues pay a fortune in sky subscriptions (BB pays around $700 per month)and you only get a handful  of channels, not the full digital package (i think the basic deal is free to air tv + 5 channels of your choice). - once you take the sport channels, that doesnt leave a hell of a lot

Having just got mysky installed...DEF. NOT for the bloody rugby...but because the A League was expanding and I watch every bloody game     and I'm thinking ... OF COURSE Sky are going to televise all  those games..RIGHT??

this is not what I want to hear!!

BTW, if anyone does have access to email addresses of said directors...
someone will know someone,.. we're a small country...
I would suggest it is pm'd to the  YF admin  so a sensible series of questions can be put to Sky.... rather than Rant Spam!... we would more likely get a more sypathetic ear and the opportunity for future dialogue.
just a thought.cheers
