It's a drawback of not having a reserve league for developing players to play week in week out sadly.

I am pretty sure that any chance of a NCAA Scholorship would now be void as he has been a professional player. I have heard through the grapevine that he may be off to Derby County in a few months

Jacob's a nice guy, I wish him all the best wherever he ends up. Definitely a promising future.

US scholarships are often on the table for 3 years, but year his professionalism would logically make that option redundant. Hope he goes to England and works his way up.

Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

And when I say up, I mean up to the premiership and then up further to the Phoenix of course.

That guy!? He gave TW 2 goals last week - couldn't clear a table let alone a loose ball

Apparently Jacob had an offer from Melbourne Knights at the start of the year.

Well its a fair comment about releasing him. We can a short contacted keeper if an injury happens to the other two keepers at short notice.

It's not as hard to get such a keeper blend to the team formation whereas a short contacted outfield player takes more training time to blend in at short notice.

Really good outfield players are unlikely to have available at short notice but there are plenty of good enough keepers about.

How can Ricki say he has grown as a player when he never played?? Going from 20 to 21 and hitting the weights Im sure he has but I don't think that is what Ricki meant....

I'm sure training with the likes of Moss and Paston daily would have been a great experience for him.

I think it;s for the best interest of Jacob to go...
He has more chance of "making" it overseas... he's very talented, and seems no-one has a bad thing to say about him... plus he is the only player I've heard of that gets told to rest because he "over-trains"...

A little bit odd that the NZ Young Player of the year in 2007 get's released?!?!?! Makes no sense...

Oh well... Good luck to Jacob - he'll go places!!! (He's better than Paston)

I have to say that the whole Spoonley thing bugs me.

Having 3 youth players in the squad is good for development only if they get game time.... and lets face it Spoonley was never going to get game time with Moss and Paston ahead of him.  Having talanted young players (like him, Costa and Draper) starved of any game time in the most important development stage of his career is just dumb (lets hope the youth league fixes this).

Plus now because he has been pro the US College soccer route is no longer available for him.  He could have been playing every week and got a free education rather than entertaining the crowd at half time.

Also the A-League website has got a picture of Moss in the story about Spoonley.... do they actually watch the A League.

ACFC could do with signing him. Ross is injured and talking retirement and Tamati Williams is just not up to it.

No-one forced him to sign a contract, you pays yer money and takes yer chance.  I'd rather they let him go than string him along.

I agree that letting him go is the best option now --- he needs to get game time.

I'm just questioning whether signing him, or any other youth player who won't get any game time, is in the players best interests or is it just to satisfy the rule that the club needs to have 3 u20 players on their books.  The rule is there to develop young players... the question is did it do what it was supposed to last year for the Phoenix?  I don't think starving players of games develops players.  Anyway youth league will hopefully fix things.

It's true that no-one forced him to sign --- although the fact that he is young and the lines are blurred between the Phoenix and NZFootball makes things a little more complicated.

Pancakes, I think you will find that it was Chris Sinclair in goal and not Mike?

All of those people who constantly sl*g Pastey off for being crap are IDIOTS. If it hadn't been for a freak accident at training the morning before the Melbourne game, Pastey would have started and Mossy may have never got his chance. Pastey got brought in against Adelaide having not played any lead up games, on a windy day, where a number of players also didn't play well and made a couple of errors. It happens. All his negative comments seem to stem from this one game. As Valeo said, Pasty was immense for the Knights and Im sure when he gets his chance with the Nix this year he will do the same for us. We are lucky to have two fantastic keepers in the squad and it will be a great battle for the number 1 jersey over the next 5 months.
As for a possible 3rd keeper, Jake Gleeson would be a great option. He is 17, a Wellington boy, a real talent and will thrive in this environment. Giving him the opportunity to train 3 or 4 times a week with the team will help prepare him for the next step. If he is good enough for Everton to want to pay for him to go back there, he is good enough for the nix to look at him.

A couple of points.

1, Not only were there changes but he played behind a defensive pair of O'Dor and Old.

2, He had some questionable moments in an AW's shirt last year as well.  Again, that could have been a lack of match time.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Could well have been, old son. I felt a bit sorry for the lad - he was at fault for both goals - I can imagine it would shatter a boy's confidence.

Although to be fair to the lad, the back passes put him in a difficult position. Then again, I'm a keeper so always like to think the defence were at fault
