I think

                      Paston

Muscat   Siggy   Durante   Lochy

                      Mckain

Bertos   Ferrante/Brown/Diego   Daniel

               Ifill            Greenacre

I feel that if the likes of Daniel get subbed we can drop Ifill back to a winger role and bring costa/hearield or "John" on up front.

I reckon its a pretty high possibility that we will have a Starting XI!

Vinnie Lia second centre mid spot with McKain? I've forgotten Daniel as well.

what about mulligan, pretty experienced in english lower league and made 20+ apperiences for the all whites. Will he push Tony and Manny for a fullback spot?

Unlikely.  Most people will have seen him play at the Confeds.

Maybe a chance in midfield but behind a long queue and even at Full back I reckon they might well consider Lia, Dura and Siggy first.

If Mulligan plays in that position as well as he played against the Mainland XI then he stays but otherwise he's gone and Greenacre partners Ifill up front.  That or possibly lose Ferrante and bring Greenacre in.

It would seem to me that Herbert has shown in the past to be reasonably conservative, therefore I think McKain and Brown will play. So if we are going to play two up front which the hunt for strikers would suggest then there are 2 spots open for Ferrante, Daniel, Bertos, Diego, Hearfield and Marco.

I think it will be Ferrante in the middle, with two quality strikers this year and not 1, we should look to play a more attacking style of football, and Ferrante has the best range of passing, brown does not.  Also with Ferrante long diaganol balls some one like Ifil wit his pace should provide some great options in behind the defence.

I put hearfield out right because he has had a strong pre season by all accounts and deserves a start.

im not sure why everyone is considering rojas for their team? Look at Costa. He had a lengthy proving period and has proved himself capable now it is the next young persons turn to do so.

for me Lia    Sigmund    Durante    Lochead
         Bertos     McKain     Ferrante     Hearfield
                          Ifill       Greenacre

Muscat
Crowther
Daniel
Brown
Striker... Costa or Chinese Fella.

chose Lia over Muscat, because Muscats a decent defender, but against anyone with a bit of speed, he is crap. Too slow. For this reason also I chose Hearfield out wide, I believe he has gotten better every game I have seen him and has genuine pace to get down the flanks. With him and Bertos crossing it hopefully we will have good service to our front two. McKain keeps the midfield solid, while I chose Ferrante because he's the only player I feel that has a bit of mongrel in him, keeps working hard and not afraid to shy out against other midfielders.

i tend to agree with Bopman that likely Herbert will be fairly conservative, so if he is committed to starting his big off season buys, Greenacre and Ifill, then doubt he will start Diego in attacking mid role as well. Instead he'll play two defensively minded midfielders in Brown and Mckain. I think its unlikely Ferrante did enough last season (I was personally very dissapointed with him, thought he had essentially no impact on the season last year) to warrant a start ahead of those two. Mckain was decent and Brown, despite some average performances and a Confed he wont remember, defended well, got around the park and picked up 3 goals (second top) last year. Lia will likely be pushing Muscat at right back as well as an option in the middle. Bertos will start on one flank, meaning Hearfield, Diego?, perhaps Daniel, then at the very outside, Costa and Rojas competing for final wide attacking spot.

PS I think Mulligan has to do just a little more than play one decent match against a Mainland XI in pre-season as a holding mid to somehow be considered ahead of Brown, Mckain, Ferrante and Lia.

Muscat/Lia (it's a toss up, but i'd chose Manny)  Siggy Durante Lochy

Hearfield McKain   Brown   Bertos

                Greenacre  Ifill

This is the most likely lineup imo, especially with Diego out. It will be a 4-4-2. Ifill might not play though - depends on fitness.

Rojas
Ferrante
Daniel
Crowther

Thats my most likely line up, one issue may be however Herberts reluctance to start Ifill straight away. Have seen in the past he has made sure players are well bedded into the structures before starting them. If he doesn't start him against Newcastle I think they will play a 4-2-3-1 with Greenacre up front and Leo, Daniel and Hearfield behind him

Yep, fully agreed. Think Ifill might come here a bit underdone.

My ten cents worth is for going with this except swop Daniel for starting with Ferrante on the bench, although this is one area where there are a few options.
Maybe also swop Lia for Muscat or Lochead if the latter does not return to season 1 form (Muscat did not impress me in Tianjin but maybe that was just an off day, he was good at the end of last season).
I think Bertos and Hearfield need to start after good pre-seasons, the rest basically pick themselves.
Costa on as fresh legs on 70min for whichever of Ifill/Greenacre has relatively less fitness or has an off day.
If there are four bench spots then Crowther needs to be there and Brown stays home, although I kind of think he deserves to be there as well. Glad it's Ricki not me making these decisions.

As far as I'm concerned Lochhead's done very little of late to warrant a starting spot in a professional team.  He's been very average and should be on the bench, made to work for his machtime.
