You're right HN, Smeltzy's sh*t actually, when you think about it.

I think it was 7 goals not from penalties so that would have placed him with Joel Griffiths in the middle of the golden boot, and one of the stats I found interesting was that he never scored an away goal for us last year, apart from penalties. Hopefully he repeats that this year so he doesn't bang any in at the ROF.

Greenacre has a history of knee-knack and has played 30 minutes of the Phoenix pre-season.

Not exactly displayed form.

Fair point, but I thought he might have been given a little shorter odds looking at his record and potential.

Oh well, I'm sure if he bangs them in in China they'll come down.

30mins more than Fowler.

I do suspect that some of those odds are influenced by Australian punters backing their team and its players ...

...rather than rationally picking Greenacre

I think our odds are a little out there but its probably because;

1. Pre-season hasn't been that great.
2. Because by giving crazy odds it will stimulate us to bet for the nix because we think we could win big!

4. Greenacre as the marksman (you reckon Hard News) hasn't scored yet.

i think its fair enough that our odds are that but maybe thats just me..Losing our 2 best players and replacing them with injury-prone 30 somethings (no matter what their past pedigree is),isnt good form from a punters perspective and naturally is reflected in higher odds. And yes, maybe inflated a bit by aussie not willing to bet on a kiwi team Tegal2009-08-04 11:27:44

You referring to Ifill? He's 29

Knew someone would get me out on that. Close enough point still stands. Im not saying i agree with the odds (im tempted to go put a tenner or so on myself),i just see how they came to them.

Look at Nth Qlnd vs nix from a basic betting point of view...

Average players + injury prone robbie folwer from the likes of liverpool and man city VS average players + injury prone greenacre from tranmere

Again, not saying i agree,i can just see the bookies side...If you dont like the odds, beat them

The way we have been treated by the media across the Tasman I am surprised that we are only paying $3.75, albeit against a prety average Jets lineup. I'd have thought they'd have been more likely to put us at $5-6, like CCM, given the coverage we have received, and our apparent certainty to receive the wooden spoon. If we play two up front I'd say $3.75 is pretty good money.

Roar GCU is an interesting one, there will be a lot of passion there, don't know who I'll chuck money on, draw possibly a goer?

Victory hands down, probably Sydney (outside chance of a draw?), and Perth Adelaide is probably paying about right I'd say.

As for Ifill/Greenacre and injury prone- injuries don't come into it for one-off games, unless either is injured at the start. Injury-prone will come into it for any med-long term bets.

Can I go in and put on an 'ad hoc' bet in the TAB such as Greenacre to win the Golden Boot??

Not 100% on how the TAB works here?

I can't see any such option for betting on their website for example.

No, not ad hoc, but they do have a book open for the Golden Boot.  They opened Greenacre at $67 but he's now in to the twenties.

Damn!

Do you have to ask them for those odds at the desk then? I've never seen anything like that on the boards?

Careful, you are sounding awfully like the Aussie commentators, logic-wise.
Doesn't always work that way.

Got $20 on win, $10 on draw. gets me $70 if they win (and satisfaction = priceless) and still profit if  draw for cover

Doing a multi: Head to head, Melbourne over Coast, Sydney over Fury, Phoenix over Jets. $10 gives me a $128.80 return. Get in.

Good plan.
Actually an A-League multibet pools approach would be a damn fine idea to increase interest in A-League (hint hint TAB & SKY TV)

I know, I know, its serious!

TAB does a pools bet on the EPL, looks like they are doing live betting on the Nix game, so might hold fire backing them untill I see how they start off the game.

TAB does a pools bet on the EPL ...

My point exactly. Creating one for the A-League could be mutually beneficial (although one suspects bizarrely that SKY may be less than keen on seeing A-League viewing really flourish).

I know, I know, its serious!

Anyone know why TAB here aren't doing first goalscorer bets this season? It's a bit annoying - surely one of the most popular bets in football??

TAB odds in July

$3.75  Melbourne Victory
$4.50  Brisbane Roar
$7.00  Sydney FC
$7.00  Gold Coast United
$10.00 Adelaide United
$12.00 Central Coast Mariners
$12.00 Perth Glory
$16.00 Newcastle Jets
$16.00 North Queensland Fury
$28.00 Wellington Phoenix

Interesting to compare the above TAB rankings and odds (before the season had kicked off) with the latest Centrebet rankings and odds (for the Championship). The number in brackets is the teams movement in ranking;

$2.35  Sydney FC (+2)
$3.00  Melbourne Victory (-1)
$4.50  Gold Coast United (+1)
$9.00 Newcastle Jets (+4)
$19.00 Perth Glory (+2)
$19.00 Wellington Phoenix (+4)
$26.00  Brisbane Roar (-5)
$34.00 Central Coast Mariners (-2)
$51.00 Adelaide United (-4)
$51.00 North Queensland Fury (-1)

Big movers up are the Jets and Nix, big movers down are the Roar and Adelaide.

Centrebet now have us making the play-offs !!

Centrebet offers a combination bet - games first scorer and game score. You can get a decent payout for a $1 bet - Browny and 3-1 paid $111.

Assuming the Nix score first (which we have done the last few weeks) the "beauty" of the bet is your first goal scorer will, most of the time, be Ifill, Greeny, Dadi or Browny - the tricky bit is then picking the score.
