I'm not sure what was going on there - Melbourne have (arguably?) the best midfield in the HAL. They are also known for not playing with any width. So what do we do? try to beat them at their own game, straight up the middle and we get well and truely shown up. Some damn slick passing by Melbourne, not helped by the Nix for some reason that defies belief, not playing their natural game.

WHEN we play well and WHEN we score, it is from effectively utilising wide positions, either playing the ball in or with wide players cutting in with ball at feet, drawing defenders away from players making runs. Its never up the middle.

So we are missing Lochy that much then?

To be honest I think we are...

Could we seriously challenge Tards and Old Bling? NO

I disagree with your second point - based solely on this game, no. BUT (and thats a big capitilised but), we would have to playing our natural wide, flowing game at our peak.

I believe that was melbourne at their best or close to. If the Nix were in the form we played against GCU or Newcastle at home? I think we could beat them. We would expose them out wide with clever inteplay and skilful runs rather than hopeful long balls and horribly ineffective close passing. Our central midfield  would be under a lot less pressure (i.e. not getting caught in f*cking possesion) and with our fully fit wing backs, would have the pace and the positioning to shutdown the horrible (Sydney, Brisbane and) Melbourne counter attack goals.

I reckon we'd be good for 2-1 - on our day

Yes we were horrible, really poor. Our dead ball is absolute f**king garbage, has been all season. Bit of perspective though, Melbourne are a seriously good side that will take some stopping. 2 goals on the break which are going to happen against them.

Lochy back next week, time to revert to the tried and true I think

Temporary back line - last 2 games - 0 points conceding 6 goals, scoring 0.

Preceding 5 games - back four of Hearfield, Dura, McKain and Lochhead - 10 points out of 15, conceding a total of 3 goals in 5 games and scoring 9.

Solid and consistent back 4 key to defense, Hearfield and Lochhead going forward key to attack.

Agree, and it hasn't just changed us defensively, its also thrown out a lot of our attacks from the overlapping runs from the wingbacks.

F**k me Richie really needs to work on dead ball situation. Over 10 corners, not one looked threatening

im going to be brute and honest. diego playing a full 90 wasnt a smart idea as he had barely any impact through the entire game, the subs had barely any impact at all, especially disapointed in caceres and bertos who we all know can produce alot better. our centre backs were out of position for all those last three goals, we really need to pick our game up if we want to make it to the playoffs!

absolutely diabolical..what a shambles...none of the subs were worth the effort....god how we need a decent midfielder

Caceres is the best, and only decent, corner taker in the team - but even he can't get them over from the bench.

My conclusion from that one is that Melbourne will be good to watch in the Asian Champions League.

P.S. Does Sky have any coverage of the ACL down there? Presume not?

P.P.S. Thank god we have ALOLaide up next.

Haven't before.

Might be nice if they did, to show there is interest in Asia and get some love from AFC.

I agree with this for the remainder of this season.

What that game showed though is what a gap there is between MV/Syd/GCU and the rest (as Newcastle also found out on Sun and as Perth found out when they went to Melbourne). It's going to be a tough bridge to cross.

Whats the bet though that we'll end up as PhLOLnix after that match? If we played the way we did tonight we almost certainly will lose. If we play any of the next 3 games the way we did tonight, bye bye playoffs.

I think it would be LOLnix, without the PH.

They didn't deserve to lose to Melbourne at the weekend.

I didn't think we played as badly as Friday night.  Like someone else said Melbourne was at their best.  There were actually a number of passes strung togethe tonight.  Taking Ifill off was a silly move.

Imagine getting a crowd of 18,000 behind the Phoenix

Yep - we remain 3 players (DM, AM, targetman) short of being competitve, over a season, with the big 3.

That's got to be tough for Terry to deal with - he's invested significantly in the team and is still a long way (i.e. seroius $s) from having a top side.

Just got home from the match at Etitard.

I had two teenage Tard girls tried to give it large to me about the result. I mentioned that Tardistan away was not as intimidating as Millwall away and they stared at me blankly and swiftly told them thatbthey should be at the tennis.

f**king Tards ruined a perfectly good public holiday!

Amazing how we can be signficant $$ behind when htere is a salary cap.

I wonder if Ricki will bring a couple players in from the cold?? After two complete shockers ( i missed this game bar for radio coverage for the 2nd half) people should be getting dropped.

Brin in Mulligan and Costa with Rojas on the bench. Youth and enthusiasm from two of htem, and one hell of a point to prove from the other.

Rationally we were well beaten by a good side, but yes, I'm struggling to get anything positive out of the last two matches and rather downcast too.

Only positive I can think of is that there are no Aussies at my work (might put the "out of office" on for the emails).

A few more positives:

  • We are still in the top 6
  • 2 or our last 3 games are against teams playing consistently worse football than us
  • these two games are also, coincedently, at home
  • the results from the last two games probably won't have an effect on the crowd numbers come saturday due to the game being in CHCH
  • better we have a form slump now than in the finals (WHEN we make the finals)

I was wondering that while watching the game - is it just coincedence that the clubs from the biggest cities (SFC and Melbourne) or with the most 'money' (GCU) seem to be light years ahead of everyone else even with the salary cap?
