WHEN we play well and WHEN we score, it is from effectively utilising wide positions, either playing the ball in or with wide players cutting in with ball at feet, drawing defenders away from players making runs. Its never up the middle.
So we are missing Lochy that much then?
To be honest I think we are...

I disagree with your second point - based solely on this game, no. BUT (and thats a big capitilised but), we would have to playing our natural wide, flowing game at our peak.
I believe that was melbourne at their best or close to. If the Nix were in the form we played against GCU or Newcastle at home? I think we could beat them. We would expose them out wide with clever inteplay and skilful runs rather than hopeful long balls and horribly ineffective close passing. Our central midfield would be under a lot less pressure (i.e. not getting caught in f*cking possesion) and with our fully fit wing backs, would have the pace and the positioning to shutdown the horrible (Sydney, Brisbane and) Melbourne counter attack goals.
I reckon we'd be good for 2-1 - on our day

Agree, and it hasn't just changed us defensively, its also thrown out a lot of our attacks from the overlapping runs from the wingbacks.

Might be nice if they did, to show there is interest in Asia and get some love from AFC.

I agree with this for the remainder of this season.
What that game showed though is what a gap there is between MV/Syd/GCU and the rest (as Newcastle also found out on Sun and as Perth found out when they went to Melbourne). It's going to be a tough bridge to cross.
Whats the bet though that we'll end up as PhLOLnix after that match? If we played the way we did tonight we almost certainly will lose. If we play any of the next 3 games the way we did tonight, bye bye playoffs.
They didn't deserve to lose to Melbourne at the weekend.
I didn't think we played as badly as Friday night. Like someone else said Melbourne was at their best. There were actually a number of passes strung togethe tonight. Taking Ifill off was a silly move.
Imagine getting a crowd of 18,000 behind the Phoenix

A few more positives:
- We are still in the top 6
- 2 or our last 3 games are against teams playing consistently worse football than us
- these two games are also, coincedently, at home
- the results from the last two games probably won't have an effect on the crowd numbers come saturday due to the game being in CHCH
- better we have a form slump now than in the finals (WHEN we make the finals)

I was wondering that while watching the game - is it just coincedence that the clubs from the biggest cities (SFC and Melbourne) or with the most 'money' (GCU) seem to be light years ahead of everyone else even with the salary cap?
