Hmmm!!!
Ok we are going to go into this season seriously underdone. 3 more players soon to be signed and bedded into our system with virtually no time left. But when you look at this team they are all senior pros....they all played together last year(except Downey). They have been training together for ferkin months....people who saw the game are talking about lack of cohesion. You would expect thme to gel together quite quickly.

So we will just have to wait and see. Personally it looks the same old, same old to me. The only thing new on the scene is sanchez....If you signed him  to be your attacking mid then why don't you give him a decent go right at the start. If it does not work then you can revert to your midfield dinosaurs.

I am prepared to cut them a lot of slack because it has been a shiite off season but they had better sort out some real basic stuff....like defending....or its going to be a long season.

Based on what I saw, if I was going to give Sanchez a run, I would bench Lia. That would give you Muscat who is defensive, Sanchez who is attacking and Brown to fill in the gap. Of the 3 invisible men, Lia was probably the least performed.

Geez what a depressing day, sh*t stadium, sh*t weather, and the Nix looked like they were going through the motions
Ratings:
Pasty 7 a couple of top saves when they really should have scored
Downey 5 some good moments, but his winger just cut inside him all night
Siggy 5 Ordinary
Dura 6 had to mop up a lot, struggled to cope with Matt Simon
Lochie 5 Didn't have a lot of pressure on him, tried to push fwd but with little impact
Leo 5 Seems to have lost the ability to take people on
Timmy 4 Little impact
Vinnie 4 ditto
Manny 4 ditto
Ifill 3 Disappointing, didn't make anything happen
Greenie 5 Received the ball well
Pav 2 He can run around
Daniel 6 Actually created some moves, a coiple of good passes to put runners into the gaps
Other subs 1 Zero impact.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

I can probably agree to most of that.

Paston - Yeah he save a couple of shots but we've always been told what an excellent organiser he is. I got the impression he was very unorganised in the way he marshalled his back 4. Balls were allowed to sit or bounce in the penalty area and he seemed apprehensive as opposed to commanding. I didn't hear much in terms of communication. I think that most people can stop a shot if you put them in front of it but being a keeper is more than than so the 7 should be more a 5 for me.

Greenie - I don't think he received it well at all. The amount of times we did the long ball clearance and he had to to chase or the ball was knocked into the left wing 30y hole that he had to chase... The ball to feet he did got was hit at such a pace that on a wet surface, he was never going to receive the ball well because he was not able to control it.

I am fearful for Sigmund and game time this year if thats how he is going to play cause the instant he gets turned, he is losing the foot race or is trying to grapple players. Some of his stuff didn't look out of place in a Melbourne Storm shirt and was really agricultural at best. He is looking in fantastic shape but other than endeavour and trying for 90 mins, he needs to have a bit more about him because with ball at feet, he has not a clue in the world.

played well in the grand final last season. He's what they've got on their bench.

It shows the damage done by not having a strong off-season- we are seriously missing depth in our squad and on the field.

Thought Greenie would score a few though- it was freezing in Tauranga and raining....

I thought the little bit of technique that Daniel showed, showed how poor the technique is across the squad- this is something Marco had that we are missing.

Good news is everyone is can lift a lot from that game- it was far from peak form and another couple of good players could lift our performance and give us more options.

TBF, we've usually had a sh*t preseason and start to the season before coming right towards the end.

It seems there's a pattern emerging with our home away from home match form, and something to be wary of in planning these matches for the future.

If they race stockcars there, we lose.

What a long way to travel for a sh*t game in foul weather with a bunch of stiffs in the crowd.
Getting WTF looks from the people around us when chanting was LOL.
Liz explaining to someone that we stand to watch the football and them then moving was even better.

Big thanks to the crew at Imbibe for letting us setup the flags out front.
Nice to see Nathan after the game in the bar.
Downing a Celtic red as the players coach/bus goes past telling them to come inside and they go for a swim instead :

Ard Choille - were you the Manc git yelling out continuously to throw it up the line while drinking Speights? If so, then they were right to tell you to shut up.

If it wasn't you, then carry on.

ahhh the season does not sound super exciting. I am worried about our defense, as the current combos arent doing the job, and we arent looking to add someone there to strengthen - only someone to back up what we have.

No worries.  They were total crap and leaked six goals in Dunedin.  They pretty poor and leaked two goals in Tauranga.

At that rate of progress clearly they will have a clean sheet and Downey and Siggy will score goals in their next game.
